I only worked AA once. I was about 12, and attending a college con run by our local community college. A friend was part of the anime club (also 12/13) and we both shared a table. She was so *proud* of our work. I agreed and came with a portfolio that looked like... well... pic related.

one splerglord of a neckbeard, maybe 30+ and fat and smelly looked through my 'art' for about an hour, before finally asking if I drew on commission.

>I could, I guess?
>c-c-can you draw me and all of the girls from love hina taking a bath together?
>what
>i don't think i can do that

Kinyoobi con I saw an artist with a good Jotaro drawing offering comissions. He looked to be in highschool and I decided to ask him for a commission to draw me in the Jojo style as I thought I'd support a fellow fan. He takes my photo and says come back in 20 minutes.

Got this last year during Metro. The girl I got it from was kinda slow with it, but I'm happy with it. I doubt I'd get another Comish from her since it took her about two days for a simple drawing of Slenderman at that. It was 15$, so I can't really complain much. I'm sure the artist gave me a card with her info on it, but it's long been gone. I know it was a chick though if that helps.

Shit, I didn't think it was that bad.. I don't really like to spread shit, but the artist signed under "Aihoshi", but I've looked around DA and Tumblr and didn't find anything else from her. I know she was selling prints, and she was pretty skinny I think. I know one of my friends bought something Doctor Who related from her, and another bought a shitty laminated Key chain from her. I can't draw to save my life, and at the time it was my first time even ordering a comish, so I really didn't know at the time on what's counted as 'good' and what's counted as 'bad'. I haven't ordered a comish since then, but uhm thanks for pointing me in the right direction with that. I thought I was just being selfish or shallow when I thought the artist could've done a lot more than that.

Bought this at Seishun-con this year. I was looking through the girl's folder, and this is one of her older pieces; her newer stuff was much better, but I'm a huge guro fan, so I kept coming back to this one.
20 dollars for a print of this size- I didn't think it was bad at all. (I asked her how much for the original watercolour, and she said 300 or 500 dollars, goddamn. I love artists that don't sell themselves short, though, so good on her.)

You get enough and you can make ridiculous amounts of bank. People are cool with the upcharges for the most part. As long as you properly pace yourself and do everything you can to make the process easier (ask for reference images, make an order form, give a reasonable deadline) you'll be fine.

Also its wise to take photos of your commissions or ask if the recipient can send you a scan. It's a great way to get example images

I've been to two cons so far as artist and the most I've sold a weekend was 5 prints/commissions tops. I don't even charge that much but I guess the con goers aren't really keen on my style.
Basically my style is not typical anime/manga as I come from drawing realistic stuff, so even if I choose an anime/manga related topic, I stick to more realistic aesthetics.

You either make money by casting a wide net of fandoms and pulling in lots of people ore concentrating on a few series with hardcore fans who are certain to buy stuff.

Another way to keep costs down is to reduce the amount of prints you bring and focus on doing commissions. You save on printing costs but you need to have good time management and people skills

>> No.7126026

I dunno, I guess it really depends. When I went to an AA this year, I saw a variety of styles. They ranged from kawaii uguu to more elaborate anime style to realistic ones. There was a particular artist who was just selling print after print and their style was pretty realistic, but then again, they were targeting popular series and had that vibrant, high saturated colouring style many people cream their panties over. I guess it just depends on how aggressively you pursue your audience.

There's other things that can help: having an established fanbase on the internet, a good display, acting friendly and not obnoxious or overly withdrawn...etc.

you're using waaaaay too many strokes to attempt shading, and they're all too semi-transparent. that's what's making everything look a bit lumpy and muddy. what you wanna do is use large strokes to get the general 3d form, then go in and blend with smaller strokes.

it's really very good that you're attempting such detailed and realistic compositions, but you need to go back and practice some basics.

(please keep in mind that this advice is only good if you want to be somewhat competitive with other artist-types. if you have a client base that isn't very immersed in the art scene, you'll be okay.)

Anything to show your style and even an example what you'd get out of a commission usually helps the buyer a lot to guage what they'd get out of their money. I know most artists don't typically push on their originals at the table (but then again, sometimes it depends on the prices) and often take it to the art show section. They'd leave their contact info and table info to help direct people to find them in AA if they can't pay the price for the original and would be okay with a print.

Not totally AA related, but in my city we have a yearly comic arts festival. The second floor is solely for webcomic artists, and there's always a few big names that set up tables selling prints/books etc.

A couple of artists I really like that goes there every year is the couple behind Johnny Wander.

Now before I ever attended that festival, my sister and her boyfriend went. They were big fans of Johnny Wander too, and they wanted to get a commission. But they didn't have any real money on them, and they had no idea what they wanted to get drawn.

Looking on his phone, my sister's bf had a screenshot of Captain Falcon when you finish the Super Smash Bros single mode, and a picture of a Garchomp, (It was a screenshot of a Garchomp evolving, someone had named their Gabite as Garchomp, so when it finally evolved it said "Congratulations, your Garchomp has evolved into a GARCHOMP!" Which was hilarious to him).

So they asked them to draw Captain Falcon riding a Garchomp. Since they didn't have much money on them, all my sister could offer was change, and a bunch of snacks that she had packed that day. Chewy bars, fruit snacks, etc.

When the artists got the requests, they were a bit confused but ecstatic that someone was actually paying them for a commission. (Apparently most people that day were asking stuff from them for free).

So they did the commission, which was cool. Sadly I don't have a picture of it cause my sister's bf has it.

The next year, they went back (I started coming along too after this) and wanted to get another piece done by the two. So this time they asked for a picture of a Garchomp riding Captain Falcon. They didn't have the reference pics anymore, so we made it a challenge to get them to do it by memory. They had a fun time drawing it. We also increased the pay with a whole bag full of an assortment of candies.

This became a sort of tradition, every year we would go back and ask for a commission involving Captain Falcon and Garchomp in some shape or form. We gotten a picture of 4 Garchomps holding Captain Falcon up in a throne, Garchomps summoning Captain Falcon... And even asked for a drawing of the artist herself drawing a picture of Garchomp and Captain Falcon (she could chose whatever pose she wanted).

Of course every year we also increase the quality of pay. Last year we bought them a whole birthday cake, next year we plan on buying a full course dinner takeout for them. Every year we stop by their table, they light up. It's a fun tradition I look forward to every year. Sadly I can't post any of the pieces cause my sister bf''s has them all, but they're well done and hilarious

...Could I sell commissions? This is a drawing from about a year ago, technical pen on paper with watercolor.

Took me about an hour when I did it, could probably work faster these days.

I don't see why not.
Make sure to show plenty examples of your work so people know what you're strong with and what you're willing to do. People like monsters and the like, and I don't see too much of that that cons, aside from the small craze Pacific Rim started.
