Youmacon is just barely over a month. You ready?

My body is so ready. I only go to two cons a year so I've been pretty excited for it since my last one was like 8 months ago. I'm only going Saturday, though. I really hope it's not a huge wreck like it was last year.

That doesn't mean it's not a problem. Just because it's an issue that is old doesn't mean that it shouldn't be considered for resolution. The RenCen is an atrocious venue for the con. The only things you should overly concern yourself with is:
A) Uh, hello? It's gonna be cold, we're in MICHIGAN.
B.) The abundance of SnK/AoT cosplayers there will be.
C.) Finding the most cost efficient way to move back and forth between the Rencen and Cobo.

The elevators weren't even accessible. There's a couple small ones on the outlying edges of the building, but they're usually guarded and only go up to the second level. I'm hoping COBO will have enough programming to keep me occupied this year, as I don't want to have to fight my way up and down the RenCen ever hour.

>> No.7127172

I have heard that the wristband bullcrap is NOT going to happen this year thank GOD. However the hotel is going to enforce a 'four people per room' policy. How they will do this I have no idea.

As far as elevators go, the ones on a couple of floors of the RenCen were restricted (I think it was 4th and 5th floor?) to con goers which is crap because I think it would really alleviate things if more elevators were usable. Even with the wristbands last year, the elevators were constantly packed to bursting... and the check out time of 11 A.M was not helping things either on the last day of the con. Dear GOD trying to get an elevator on that day was nigh impossible. BF and I used the stairs at some points during the con but those stairs are narrow and steep as hell... constantly felt like I was going to fall and break my neck.

7129845

A couple things about everything:

Yeah, Ren Cen sucks and can't handle the amount of people Youmacon brings. HOWEVER, it's the biggest place in a 5 hour drive. There is nowhere else to go, other than move the whole thing to Chicago. Youmacon is literally gotten that big.

The thing about the programs last year is a "friend" of a staff member said "Hey, I have a giant printing business and I'll do all your printing for cheaper than you currently get it!" They went with that "friend" and got screwed over big time. I hear that Morgan is still going through court to sue the guy because that was a huge issue not having programs on time last year. All of the staff was probably more upset than any of the congoers it seems. My staff friends still bring this up as the worst thing from last year and guarantee it will not happen ever again.

The Ren Cen literally is the safest place in all of Detroit. Hell a year ago at Oyahocon my friends car had a window smashed in one of the main parking lots, and I think that is the worst that happened at the Ren Cen before. However, Detroit itself hasn't been very good about handling things, because Youmacon is too big for them even. The city was supposed to handle the people mover passes last year and since it's Detroit, the people they hired to do it basically forgot and then didn't do a good job at all. The walk to cobo is cooler anyway because of MUH FIST. I was sad last year that I didn't see more cool cosplay pictures at it. There were a couple but not nearly enough.

Lazytown: FUCK YES.

The Pony girls are typically fun and don't take themselves too seriously other than to be cute and funny and silly. The BRONIES however are a different animal and they scare me.

As for the bridge, there are only certain times each year that Pedestrians or bikes are allowed. This is because the bridge owner doesn't want people getting over "cheap". The bridge is not owned or managed by Detroit or Canada at all.

There's not a lot of brony shit. Generally we do see the odd man out brony and the single group cosplaying as pone, and the one girl in a color coordinated ball gown with a MLP hair piece pretending to be a pony.

So nothing really out of the ordinary for a anime convention.

You get more homestuck cosplay then anything else. I mean have this people fucking taken over conventions or what?

Also Youmacon gets a decent bit of western cosplay. Because they don't purposely shun western cosplay, and the video game tournaments attach a larger western oriented crowd.

:.:.:

Down town detroit isn't bad. Down/Mid town is actually quite nice and you can walk with your head up, there's good police, ambulance service b/c its where tourists go. Just walking around the Down/Mid Town area you would be quite oblivious to the crisis in Detroit. The BAD OMG OMG OMG, are generally off on the west side far far away from Downtown. And even there its not like wildwest lawlessness, people are still people who are trying to scrap out a living normally without crime. Seriously, the way you think of others reflects greatly on yourself assuming everyone living in poverty is a criminal is a horrible assumption to make.

>Midtown is really well-policed due to Wayne State being down there.
Midtown has the highest statistics of forced rape anywhere in the US. Luckily, it's a ten minute ride from the Ren Cen, and those dumpster diving criminals only target drunk college girls returning from the bars.

>>7131348
>people are still people who are trying to scrap out a living normally without crime.
This is completely untrue. Most people in detroit ARE violent criminals. they are. They are opportunists who will jump on anything that looks like a chance. Which is exactly why the criminals stay away from the Ren Cen: there is no chance for them to get away with anything.

I have a surburbanite friend who went to a downtown restaurant last summer. Her car was towed away when she came out. It was found a day later, in an abandoned garage with everything taken out of it (including the wheels|). The restaurant people pretty much said it was her fault since she parked a block away from the restaurant. I don't think that friend will be back in Detroit for a meal and a night out anytime soon. But still... that's not the Ren Cen, where pretty much no crime happens. Literally, the Ren Cen is really the only place the city really cares about..that and the sports fields. \Other than that, the city doesn't care and can't afford to care.

>>7131817
>Anyone who thinks that Detroit is a wretched hive of scum and villainy obviously never went to Eastern Market.
I've been to parties there. I'd tell you that you are wrong. Eastern Market is getting better though, as you'll see security everywhere on a saturday afternoon. But that isn't the rest of the week there. If it's daytime, you'll be fine. If it's night, be prepared to have your car broken in to. But again, that's not the Ren Cen. There are literally no cops in eastern market other than when the market is open. There are always cops near the Ren Cen 24/7. Go to EM for a tailgating party though. Definitely a good time.

There's a big food court in the basement. Hint: eat at subway. The McDonalds surprise raises all of its prices when we get there.

The Mexican place is okay too. But I remember the subway guys talking about how they loved us, and how they were setting records, and how they had 3 other subways in the area sending food over to us to keep us fed. That's why I'll probably eat there every day again this year because they really seemed to love us a lot (where the other places seemed to see us as a nuisance instead).

The manager totally loved us though and I remember seeing him personally giving out food and being all happy to each person picking up their orders.

Even if you thought it sucked last year it's the best arcade/gaming room I have seen at any con ever. Though it looks like you weren't interested in any of the retro games. All of them were free play and it was amazing. The console section was impressive as well. I didn't care much for the PC section though. That's not really why I would go to a con arcade...

This year's setup looks good too.

I remember asking about the PC setup last year. The staff guy basically said "For some reason, everyone here just wants to play League, and we don't know why, so we made everything a League machine, so they can all play together"

And yes, all the League machines were busy last year all the time. I think its our fault that there werent more PC choices last year. Too many people want to do nothing but play thier shitty Dota cloness.

And you also needed to go check out the gameroom at cobo. There was a ton more there too, since Youmacon basically had two full gamerooms. They pretty much had 2 arcades (thoough cobo was pretty much all fighting games).

Do you have any advice for hosting a good panel? Namely just keeping it entertaining and to handle the nervousness that comes with it (never spoke in front of so many people before).

hotels cannot stop you from bringing guests into your room. they can only enforce it if too many people are in the room. if they try and give you shit just demand security to walk you up to prove it will only be you and your at most i believe 3 people can be in the room at a time.

i'm glad i'm staying at the Courtyard again, they give no shits because people don't pack themselves. which idk why, it's directly connected to the con too.

oh HYPE, i was definitely making plans for seeing JoJo poses!

I've run panels at several cons for a few years now, but I've never really given thought to what I'd advise someone to do. I guess certainly you'll want to be sure of your speaking points, and in what order they fall in, and what sort of jokes you need to remember and the timing and such. Be sure to animate your body, not just your speech. Shouldn't be hard, considering your panel is about posing :V

Since you're the one with the microphone, you've got a certain freedom that is fun to exploit as long as it's not done obnoxiously. Don't be afraid to call someone out if they're trying to talk over you at your own panel, but try to do it in a nice way so you don't kill the mood.

Don't be afraid to bail out of a joke if it's not working, and don't be afraid to run back a few times with something you improvised if it gets laughs.

Be sure to check out the room a couple hours beforehand, especially if there's panels running before yours, to make sure the equipment you need IS THERE. Make sure you have your own equipment. Check and double check. I've been dicked many times on cables leaving with previous panelists and having to rely on staff for replacements. Staff are great but they have to wade through confusion and bureaucracy to get things done.
It's proper etiquette to start wrapping up your panel ten minutes early (11:50 for example) so the next set of panelists can get in and set up early for their panel. Dont expect that courtesy to be handed to you, as the panel preceding yours will run 15 minutes into your time most likely.

In-Jokes and memes are fine but use them sparingly, or else it'll seem pandering, but that's just a personal preference. A lot of people attending panels are perfectly fine with lowest common denominator writing and humor.

Don't just read straight off your powerpoint/keynote, let it be a subtle guide, or for sight gags.

Gosh, I kinda ran away with that rant. I hope some of it was useful.

BUT IM NOT DONE YET.

The first rule of improv is Yes, And!
Go with any quirks that pop up, and dont be afraid to make fun of yourself or the situation. If something silly happens like an audio cord falling out or you dropping a critical showpiece or failing to mention something on the last slide, poke fun at it.

Try to mix up your presenting. Speak for a little while, then let the audience participate or hand out prizes, then go back to talking points.

Time is wicked distorted once you've got the mic in your hands. Things will go by painfully slow before your panel, and will be over in a flash when its happening. If you ever need to stretch for time for any reason, let the audience ask questions if they have any.

Other than that, don't panic. If you find a way to do this, let me know.

and to answer your question, they did send out a beta-schedule to select panelists, but I don't have final word on it yet. My guess is tonight we'll see a finalized schedule.
They asked us not to share the full details, but it looks like you are on Saturday evening, in the Ren Cen (you lucky shit)

I work in the Ren Cen on & off. Enjoy these tips:
-Alcohol can be purchased in the RenCen itself at the Calumet Market on Floor 1, and at a convenience store in the Millender Parking structure thru the skywalk
-Food Court & independent restaurants/fast food are inconsistent for con, some will be open later/earlier than usual but plan on eating no earlier than 7 AM and no later than 8 PM.
-People Mover from RenCen to Cobo is the more direct route, and starts by the Rite-Aid on Floor 2. It's a 5 minute ride not counting time waiting for a car & con congestion
-If you're poor and absolutely must walk, take the skywalk twice from RenCen to Millender Center, and against towards Cobo, and getting off in the tunnel down some street level stairs. Walk directly to Cobo crossing 3 intersections with crosswalks designed for pedestrians. Safest way to make the walk without being directly in front of the tunnel, and it's literally idiot-proff/impossible to get lost.

>>7169365 cont.
-The walk to Cobo is roughly 15 minutes, possibly 5-10 more if you can't find your panel room/event. It's hoodie weather for people used to cold weather, possibly raining but no snow yet. Plan accordingly based on your weather tolerance.
-The Japanese Consulate is on the 16th floor of Tower 400. You basically can't get there without a card swipe from someone who works there or have an appointment. The women love talking to black guys, but not white piggus.
-Arrive to panels that are important to you at least 20 minutes early, if not earlier. Lines form and fire hazard population restrictions are strongly enforced, so it's possible to not get into something you want. Consider travel time and plan ahead.
-There's a new salad place in the food court this year, pricy but good and a lot of variety for vegans/vegetarians.
-If you're a 3DS user, carry your power cord with you to recharge in panels and sit near walls, check your street pass mode regularly because you need to check your people 10 at a time. You can easily collect & reconnect with over 100 people a day walking around and doing stuff, usually 10 at a time looping the food court alone. If you're into that, it's pretty awesome. It's a huge drain on your battery throughout the day though so stay charged.

-If you want Asian food, the Rice Bowl Express is not as good as the sit-in restaurant of the same name thru the skywalk in Millender Center(right next to the Tim Horton's.) It's chinese; if you want to go out of your way for an authentic Japanese meal, sushi, Naruto-looking ramen bowls, the huge wooden sushi boats, etc. There's two places within a 45 minute drive. Naruto Sushi(gay name, but nothing to do with the manga/anime) on Vandyke & 15 mile road, or Asahi Sushi on garfield & canal in clinton twp. Real, fresh, traditional food & service, good prices. If anyone who has the money but not the means to want to take a mini-roadtrip to either, post in this thread and I'll leave an email or cell if there's actual interest.
