Okay can I just please rant about her Ace cosplay for a minute? As a huge One Piece fan I was just really upset with this. Yes, Ace is shirtless but I'm fairly sure he would not wear booty shorts. Also because he is such an awesome badass character it makes me sad to see someone portray him this way. What I don't get is why she chose Ace. One Piece is full of voluptuous women which she could have portrayed accurately, such as timeskip Nami, or Boa Hancock. She could have had her tits out all she wanted and hey it would be canon. But she had to genderbend Ace. THEN on top of that in this video (the same con she wore ace at) she said she 'didn't want to cosplay anyone who dies'. Wat. If you like the series, I would probably suggest supporting it by cosplaying a character you can do justice. If you just Msyu and think the series is "meh" then I'd just go ahead and cosplay her accurately or do a design from art work. This is clamp, right? There are tons of art work alternates.

Ace is an amazing character but I dont see JNig having the time to sit down or read One Piece. Especially because Ace doesn't come in until the early 100s, then is gone until early 300s and then in Marineford is when your really get to see him/know his character which isn't until the 400s.(For the anime at least)

I always think cosplay should be about portraying a certain character and I really have issues when it comes to this. I personally don't like it, which also goes for most fanart-cosplay and genderbends.

Yaya churns out as many costumes as she does because she has been doing this for more than a decade. She has no other job, and after ten plus years of making shit, she can churn out stuff no problem.

Jessica has been cosplaying since 2009. All of her early costumes were bought pieces. She bought bras and skirts and panties and made costumes out of those things. Instead of just slapping on whatever covers the least amount of skin while still managing to get the point across, even just barely, I think if the person is thoughtful about the design (incorporating elements of the original costume, trying to think of what the character might wear if they were trying to be sexy) and tries to be somewhat tasteful, those costumes are fine. (Pic related; I think this is a cute, playful genderbend and something akin to what might actually appear in a comic.)

And ultimately, if a cosplayer feels like throwing on a bikini (or just a pair of shorts and suspenders or something for men), it's up to them. It in no way affects my enjoyment of this hobby. I may not enjoy looking at the costume as much, but that's the extent of my interest, and I don't get why so many people here care, especially in the case of JNig. I'm not a whiteknight, barely know anything about her, but she seems cheerful and goofy, and if she's willing to show off her body for money/attention, that's her business. To answer your questions:

Sadly it would seem to be, a lot of the fem cosplayer pages are copy/pasting what the other did (i.e R2-D2 bathing suit photos and now PowerGirl). It shows the really hard attempts at gaining followers.

Cosplaying has been slowly turning into a business feature to market X or Y products when originally it was meant for "fun".

There are limits to how far you as a cosplayer can go in making a costume. If the alteration is slight and shows certain "sexy" effect then it's done right, otherwise as many people stated it would look pretty dumb.

P.S: I've unliked a lot of of fem cosplayers due to the fact that they have deviated/changed from what they were in the first place.

To be honest though, I don't really know anyone who's genuinely said that they look up to JNig for her craftsmanship. I think if she came out and said, "Oh hey, friends made this or it's bought", people would look past it because she's fulfilling the model portion that is marketable. many moons ago there was a thing called "con hot" this meant the girl would only be considered hot at a con or some type of fan event and would be considered average at best out in the world

For years these "con hot " girls had constant nerd herds and the pick of the crop of all the con going guys

Then ACTUAL hot girls started showing and GASP dressing sexy and doing sexy cosplays, this instantly reduced "con hot" girls stratus to jealous hambeast and that made them VERY unhappy

I like dressing up, but I always stay decent, even when I was hot at 18. I don't mind people who dress "indecently", good on them for feeling comfortable like that. I suppose I'm annoyed with "booth babes" or whatever, people who don't have a clue about the character they are portraying, but not because they are hot. Why would just that bother me? There's hotter girls than me in clubs every week. Besides, even if all the nerds who were previously drooling at con-hot now drool at booth-babe, doesn't mean they won't date us still.
