I make epaulettes by myself, it wasn't that difficult as I expect. Firstly I make basic layer with 6 stitched layers of canvas (the green one), then I use that golden stripe, cover everything with 1 layer, then apply fringe and cover everything with golden aiguillette from army shop.

I appreciate that for a lot of people cosplay is mainly about the exhibition ( and there in lies the appeal of a good costume, to be viewed positively ) but for a lot of other people, the joy is in the creation. I want to make these things, I want to bring them in to the world from nothing but concept and references. Yes, I could easily buy one off a professional and have a 'professional' costume, but where's the fulfillment of knowing I spent hours doing something and having it turn out well?

On a personal note, I want to get in to prop production for theatre, television and ( dream of dreams ) movies, Ever wonder where those professionals who you pay off came from?

Ahh, that should be really cool! The pull chain was one thing I was really disappointed about because I didnt have time to find one in the 3 days prior to a con that the thing was built in (thats what i get for procrastinating) but i plan to put one on in the future. Have you gotten a hold of one yet? I think my best bet is to wait until my ancient push mower finally dies and harvest it off the thing. The speaker is a really cool idea too. You should try looking into one of those battery powered bluetooth speakers, that way you can sync your ipod or phone or whatever up and use the thing to play whatever you want.

>>7080913
Thanks, yeah canti is pretty much my baby when it comes to cosplay. I drew up some rough plans on paper and transferred them to EVA for most of the suit. the helmet is actually an old MARK VI helmet from halo (the one chief wears) that I scaled way too big when i pepped it. I realized that the helmet actually contours almost perfectly to canti's head when its flipped backwards, so I cut it almost in half and used that. Its a lot easier to see when the box isnt on my head.

If you're going for flight suit you could probably buy that, the boots, the pads etc online and piece it together. His thermal extra wear would be harder.

If you're going MGS2 style I'd suggest a zentai, but making sure it's thick moleskin matte rather than the really thin stuff they usually make them out of.

College started up again so I haven't been able to work on my next cosplay much at all. (I'm planning on a Raven cosplay, which will be pretty easy since I worked my butt off all summer on my last costume)
I found an excellent leotard for 10$ at a resale store in town that I had to alter a bit.

Thank you both so much! I'm extremely proud of it, so I'm glad that other people think it looks nice, too!

The mouth piece, ring embellishment and runes were all obviously applied before I painted anything. The mouth/ring were sculpted out of paperclay, and the runes I (NERVOUSLYOMGGGG) painted on using... puff paint. :3 I tried engraving them into the clay, but that didn't work, so I thought I'd go with the embossed/raised effect. Didn't know what else to try but puff paint. It worked great; plus, I drew the runes onto the mask/clay using pencil first and could just do the puff paint over it. (FYI, I got the little "rivets" added to the mouth by.... pressing the cap of the puff paint bottle into the soft clay! It created the perfect little raised circle design.)

I spray painted the entire thing black; I then covered up the eye sockets and outside parts of the mask with... tin foil, and spray painted lightly over the black using metallic silver spray paint. (See picture.)

This worked out a lot better than what I imagined doing the entire thing silver would have looked like. Most of the distressed silver look was already done from doing the silver-over-black.

Will post more in 1 second... comment too long!

The rest of it was just kind of.... a mix of whatever I wanted or thought would look good! I painted some dark grey acrylic paint down onto a plate, and then crumbled up some saran/plastic wrap, dipped it onto the paint, and then used that to "sponge" onto the mask. For areas that looked too bright/gray/silver, I used an actual soft sponge dipped in some black paint and used it to darken the areas a bit. I also used a toothbrush (for both varying shades of gray and black) and splattered some paint onto it. I also made a dark mix using burnt sienna + black acrylics and splattered that using the toothbrush.

I went back and used metallic silver acrylic paint to add some highlights to the runes and mouth.

For the eye sockets, I painted them solid with some burnt sienna + black paint. Then I basically just went back with varying shades of burnt sienna (gradually getting lighter) and sponged it on. Finally I added some highlights by using metallic copper acrylic paint.

I had a "test" mask as well, to try out colors and stuff... THANKFULLY I tried sealant on the test mask first. I used clear spray paint... that turned the silver paint WHITE. I also tried using some brush-on finish... that turned the dark gray paint a very light gray. I ended up using some Mod Podge to seal it - it didn't react with any of the colors and jack them up!

Not really progress, and the help threads seem dead, so I'll just post this here. Don't kill me pl0x

I recently gotten into the game Rez by a friend and wanted to do a little cosplay with it. It seems simple enough since all I would need is a black zentai suit, and paint stripes across it. I wanted to make my feet look a bit bulkier though like how it is in the game. Also it'd be great if someone could point me in the right direction on what paint to use. Thanks in advance

A striped bodysuit alone won't give off this kind of look. Have you considered the zentai suit but then using something like black foamboards w/ yellow borders for the layers? That would make it more three-dimensional.

I was posting in the help thread about this the other day, so here's a bit of progress on my Huntress Wizard wig.

Yes, I know the leaves aren't the right colors; they still have to be painted. This is just a pinned together mockup with a stand in hat to try and get the layering right (the first attempt ended up looking more like a curtain of scales than leaves). I tried doing individual lines of leaves this time and I think it looks better... but they keep leaving weird looking gaps when they part at certain angles (you can see it in some of the pics).

Thoughts so far? Any advice welcome.

Good point. They look more warped than normal right now because of how they're pinned together. In my pattern making class I took, pants patterns had to be altered like WHOA because (well, this is using a female pattern granted) the saddle only allows for something like a fucking 11 inch gap, which is insane for today's bodies, so we spent like two weeks altering pants patterns heh. Did you use a male pattern though? that would probably not need to be altered for the saddle.

Oil based sculpting clay. There's a few different kinds with different properties ( ranging from very soft and malleable with no required warming, but doesn't hold its shape well over time to extremely hard and requiring heating ), but I used the generic, middle of the road stuff.

If you're from the USA I've seen it referred to in some books on making molds I've imported as 'Plasteline'.

Neat, that's what I've got. I ask because this stuff is pretty tough to sculpt, but you clearly got some pretty intricate corners and tiny sculpts into the mask. So I guess I'll apply some heat and see how it goes.

I found the best way to warm it up was just rubbing it between my palms for a while; most of the corners were built up either with tiny pieces at a time that I constantly smoothed in to the clay so it became one solid piece, or dug out little by little, again with smoothing things constantly as I went.

Got a pattern mostly mostly worked out for an embroidery piece. Thinking about trying some goldwork techniques if I can find the right materials.

I'm still not really sure what the hell the metallic bits on the Empire uniforms are supposed to be made out of, but I figure LoGH draws a lot of inspiration from 18th-century history and the Empire is flamboyant and opulent as fuck so goldwork seems like an appropriate choice. I've seen some people go the craft foam (or maybe leather? I can't really tell) route, but it never seems to look quite right.

Like I said, foam doesn't have the look I'm going for. It's called 'goldwork' but it doesn't actually have to be gold (the uniform details in question are silver anyway), it's just an embroidery technique that uses metal wires and threads. I like the texture and the opulent look. It's still used in some formal military uniforms today.

Here's an example of the technique.

>> No.7092753

>>7092649
You're probably right about the goldwork, but usually I see people use metallic braid or cord for it and it doesn't look so bad. I can't imagine craft foam at all, it just seems so wrong. I actually really liked how the ended up interpreting the uniforms for the stage play with constrasting fabrics, so maybe take a look at those for some ideas. On the other hand I found the takarazuka costumes for it to be so ridiculously glam rock I couldn't stand it.

>> No.7092769

>>7092753

Oh, personally, I always found the stage play versions a little cheesy with the lace overlay. Honestly, I'm fond the embroidery on the Takarazuka versions (they're just very over the top, being Takarazuka and all), but I still like the anime designs the best.

I've seen some people do it with cording or piping, but it always seems a little flimsy? At least in the attempts I've seen. The metal looking bits always seemed like they're meant to be somewhat rigid to me (they stand off a bit on the shoulder edges). I think that's why some people go the foam route, but it always looks a bit wonky.

>> No.7092782

>>7092769
I could never take glam rocker reinhart seriously, and it kept throwing me out of the takarazuka show.

I think the rigidness is more an issue of interfacing than using cord or not. Let's be honest, most of the fans that try to cosplay it aren't exactly A+ at sewing. Unless you're planning to make all of the grey out by embroidering, which at that scale I wouldn't do, I'd go with a contrasting fabric and interface it well and embroider the silver, and if you can get metallic piping set in the edge properly, save yourself some hand work and use that.

Yeah I'm gonna use some kind of silver fabric for the background. Haven't decided what exactly yet, it's a relatively small piece (and the belt and cuffs even smaller), so I could splurge on something really nice too. I was thinking about adding some embellishments to the embroidery design to fill it in a bit more because it might end up looking a bit sparse, but I'm not sure if it needs it.

I guess right now my plan is to make the collar/bib a separate piece, somewhat heavily interfaced, and either sew it down onto the jacket or use snaps or something removable so I can still launder the jacket without worrying about damaging the embroidery. They usually seem to be drawn sitting on top of the jacket a bit, rather than being a set in piece. But, I don't really think the Goldenbaum-era uniforms had as much practical thought put into their designs as the later ones (you never see anyone taking the jackets off/putting them on, until they get new ones for one).

It took me a couple of tries to get it down too, but you want to connect the first scale at the top to 2 scales, then repeat the pattern. Each scale should be connected to 4 other scales to give it stability. If I picked the right picture it should show that all the rings are the same direction.

I see. If you used smaller rings you could combat it looking too loose (such as 16g 5/16"). But if you like the look, go for it

what do you mean by taper? you want loose/draped sleeves on the bottom or tight? Depending on how you're making it and how much more/less you need you can either add in some expansions/contractions (likely at the elbow, assuming long sleeves) or make the sleeve not-rectangular (parallelogram, I suppose) Hopefully that makes some sense...

>>7093863
Large scales are 300 per sq ft, small are 1000 per sq ft. I suggest patterning out the piece and measuring to see how many sq inches it is, convert into sq ft. I order about 5-10% more than I need for large projects. Sometimes you get duds.

Don't forget the edges need more rings, so you need 2 rings per scale, plus a number so you can edge everything properly.

I want the sleeves to get more form fitted as they go closer to my hands.

This is what I was planning, my arm is long enough for 3 23's unit chains, then -1 per chain until you hit 11 or 12 then its basically at wrist length. I've allowed room because I hear that chainmail needs to fit baggy, and that I need to be able to get my hand through the hole in the sleeve.

I might also only end up doing a half shirt, as gay as that sounds... because I'll be needed to do the pants chainmail as well. Since theres no hope in hell of those staying up on their own I'm going to need suspenders, which is going to add to the weight on my shoulders. I'm getting a bit ahead of myself there though, but probably good to think about it all.

it will work, but center the strips. that way when you make the seam it joins perfectly, or with a 45 degree seam. but if its 'aligned' how you have it in the image the ends won't meet as nicely

half a shirt isnt a dumb idea at all. you could also probably get away with just sleeves joined with straps if you wanted. depending on what youre going to layer over the chainmail, nobody would be able to tell anyway

Made some Koto shorts. First time I've ever done a button fly or anything that's not really an elastic waistband so I'm pretty proud of them, also POCKETS.

Thats not a bad idea. Pic related is the character, my green scalemail I'm working on that I posted earlier is going to be a substitute for the leaf-like stuff hes got on his shoulders. I may just end up doing the arms, then armpit area, then stitching it to some rather robust fabric instead of doing the whole shirt.

Thanks for the advice. I'll definitely give the sleeve stuff a try once I finish all the chains.

Your waistband is too wide and too low on your torso for super-high waisted 90's designs. I'm guessing you used a modern pattern for this.

>> No.7094874

>>7094861
Yeah, modern McCall's pattern. I also have a fairly short torso because suck body so I sorta worked with proportions to make it look similar to the source material without making me look like a stump. Hoping it looks better once I have the shirt finished.

>> No.7094902

>>7094874
Modern patterns tend to have the bottom of the waist come lower because it's more flattering for normal wear. Based on what you've said about your first pants without elastic waist, it looks like you've done well, but you would have gotten a more accurate result if you'd brought the bottom of the waistband up higher. Unfortunately that would mean a lot of re-drafting, which sounds like it might be outside your skill level right now (pants are one of the harder things to re-pattern without practice).

>> No.7094925

>>7094902
Yeah, I don't stray too far from set patterns usually. I actually made this pattern two sizes too big to get the slight bagginess Koto's has, which meant I had to dart the waistband to get it to fit the way it does now. I'm hoping once I get a shirt done and tucked in, it'll look better, but if not I can always rip the seam and resew the waist band on to make it thinner.

Got mah chest symbol all painted on and what not. Not too happy with how the topstitching came out. I realize now I should have put some interfacing behind it or found a better way to have applied the circle. This only means that another shirt will have to come later down the line before ALA. But I think a nice fancy symbol will act as my deterrent for now!

For the future, what is the best way to avoid this puckering?? Anyone?

>> No.7095248

>>7095118
Tearaway interfacing on the bottom of everything, shirt, either light weight heatnbond (will gum up your needle) or quilting spray adhesive to keep your logo in place, and if you're still having trouble, try giving your stitches a bit more length so they're not piling on top of each other so much. You may also need to fuse or use the quilting adhesive on your tearaway interfacing. The stuff dissolves as it's exposed to air, so it's just temporary, but will hold things in place while you're working. I guess you also could try an embroidery hoop while you're working on it to keep the shirt pulled snug, but that won't work if your fabric has stretch.

Large piece is 17 inches wide and approximately 8 inches long at the longest point.

Shoulders are 11 inches long and about 8 inches wide.

A different technique honestly would have worked much better, saved expensive material, and would be a lot less heavy (if in fact those entire things are made out of solid Worbla). Made my Madoka skirt and put it over my petticoat and I... don't know what happened to my gorgeous petticoat's shape. I mean I do, but it's no longer poofy in the right places and the skirt seems so long, yet barely covers my ass. I don't know what to do about this beyond gathering the bottom edge and hoping it gets better. I have 80 yards of ruffles, 4 chiffon, 2 heavy tulle and 2 light tulle, I figured it'd look you know, a little better.

I know, I thought I had it sitting pretty low already, but maybe I didn't have it low enough.

I know about the length and finishing. It's not even hemmed yet- I just cut it and gathered it at the top. I probably shouldn't have sounded so finished. Maybe it will look better through, with the gathered bottom. I AM worried about the length though- I was under the assumption that the ruffle at the bottom was one attached to the skirt and you can only see the ruffles from below, but anyway, the fabric for my skirt seems so heavy that I'm worried the silhouette is too flattened with it on.

I am loli-ing up this really ill-fitted and simple dress. I added lace and the bow and now I'm thinking of putting ruffles and a line of bows and pearl strings at the bottom. I wanted to make long puffy sleeves but a friend of mine who actually studied fashion said it would probably be too hard and I should just scrap the dress. He didn't seem to care for it very much....

Lolita who sews her own stuff chiming in. Look up a flared skirt pattern. Judging from your petti I think you might even want to go straight to a full circle skirt.

The rectangle skirt pattern always results in a cupcake shape because the bottom of the skirt has limited fabric, that's probably what's squishing your petticoat down.

>>7110905
This is terrible in so many ways. Sorry, but I think your friend is right. You're better off finding a better pattern and sewing a better dress from scratch.

Also Can I ask you to please explain where, how it looks like a formless mess? I need to know specific problems if I'm to try and fix things. I mean I know that the Pauldrons aren't sloped enough in the bottom and are too symetrical through the horizontal line of symmetry but that was a necessary evil since I didn't have the time/funds to make more than 1 plug.

I took a belt sander to it for several hours inbetween coats of fiberglass. That's as smooth as I could get it without breaking it.

Actually, this is a slightly gathered circle skirt. It's looking a little better, I think it was just the gathers weren't working well- a lot of the weight pulled to the back. The lower part may be too gathered now. I really wish I had a dressform to work on.

>> No.7110924

>>7110905
The lace really doesn't match well. You should have gone for an ivory vintage lace to match the body of the dress better, rather than something so stark white. Although to be honest, a simple chiffon ruffle would have looked better. Right now it's like lace overload. The waist trim cuts the dress in half and will draw attention to the waist in a bad way. You'd be better off taking that off.

Honestly, I agree with your friend and >>7110914. You'd be better off making something from scratch rather than attempting to alter that dress. It doesn't look 'loli' at all, and right now it just looks like a mess even for a regular dress.

Is it a full circle skirt? If so, then the fabric is too heavy for your petticoat, you can either remake the skirt with a much lighter fabric, add another petticoat so that there's more poof (the skirt will squash them both down), or use a crinoline as another anon above suggested.

As for the weight being pulled to the back, are you sure your gathers are even? I take it you've marked the 1/2, 1/4 and 1/8 of the skirt so that each section has the same amount of fabric?

>> No.7110959

>>7110945
Yes, it's a full, gathered circle skirt. The fabric is a cotton sateen. A crinoline is on the table but I also have more thick tulle I can add, or a combination of both.

My gathers weren't even last night. I put in a basting thread and pulled it as a mockup, and so the gathering kind of fell to the rear.

>> No.7110981

>>7110959

Ah, so that's what you mean by it being better now.

Cheap broadcloth is lighter than cotton sateen, if you need that option. But it looks like you've got it sorted, and you now have a lot of options if the skirt's still not fluffy enough.

Good luck with your cosplay, anon, I love that you have the body type of it.

>>7110981

Yeah, thanks for your help. :) I am always thinking my petti needs to be bigger. I think part of it is that where it opens (not elastic waisted, I should have, hindsight and all) there's less volume. I might add a layer of thick tulle into the waist of the white overskirt's underside? so it puffs up a little more. I want an accurate skirt! but I'm also afraid of overstuffing. A friend sent me a picture of someone's Madoka where the skirt was so wide she looked like Marie Antoinette!

>> No.7111017

>>7110994

I guess I'm the opposite, I like Madokas with very fluffy skirts, and it's rare to see a Madoka that has a fully fluffed skirt who isn't sitting down or twirling.

I think the amount of poof you have is pretty good! A little more poof from adding the tulle would be nice too, if it's just one layer it should be okay. Are you adding more ruffles to the end of the skirt later? It looks like a bubble skirt right now.

>> No.7111054

>>7110939

the main issue here is that you made what's two pieces of armor (the chest piece and the waist thing) into one giant armor blob that allows for no real shape or waist, thus the 'formless mess' comments

I've definitely seen some awkwardly stuffed madopettis. I am going to add another ruffle to the bottom of the white skirt. The petti is made with a cheap cotton as the ruffles (since I needed 8 yards....) and then I'm adding a cotton sateen ruffle to cover the cheaper fabrics from the front.
