I also have some stuff from this hilarious 1970s sewing book I found in a second-hand shop attached to a cat sanctuary. It has mostly sewing101 stuff and some long how-tos for basic ordinary clothing (and some incredibly dated fashion photographs).

What kind of sleeves/what do you have problems with?
Make sure you notch the sleeves/armhole. Ifones where you gather it to get the ease in, have sleeve ontop when you sew, backtack at the first notch you'll get to (so you sew from underarm seam, and with the sleeve on top you get to the front pitchpoint first, put your backtacks at the front pitch point). Sew up to the first notch, then just gather and match the top/centre notch, make sure its all even then repeat till the end.

...hopefully that makes some sort of sense anon.

also when putting your gathering stitches in its best to have about 10mm space between them.

Depends on how much money/time you have. Sewing is a practical subject that should be taught practically in my opinion - you learn faster, you can ask questions to a real person who knows what they're doing, tutors can identify mistakes you could have missed and prevent you from picking up bad habits etc. etc.
If you are completely broke then try and get a few basics down from a book or the internet but it's no replacement for having a tutor really

I'm sure loads of seagulls will disagree with me but I really do recommend taking at least one class.

I pretty much agree with this. I didn't take a class personally but I wish along the line I did. Having someone there teaching you some of the basics is great foundation when you want to start making your own shit. I'm >>7063282 and I think you're definitely on the mark with what you said. I first started sewing by using books and the internet, although I technically knew what I should do I couldn't make it work irl.
When I started learning properly (8/9 hours a week as I was a fashion student) everything started to click in to place for me and by the time I finished my course I could draft patterns from scratch, modify patterns, sew accurately and professionally, finish my garments to a high standard, recreate specialist techniques etc. Whereas before I couldn't even sew in a straight line and my garments were a hodge podge of terrible construction and poor finishing? I feel like I wasted 4 years self teaching because I learnt so fast and so much in the 2 years I spent at college

>> No.7063361

>>7063339
Yeah haha. Part of me wants to take a sewing class for fun and see what new things I could learn. I don't think it should discourage someone from going out and trying themselves, but I think if they're really serious about learning and wanting to learn properly I don't think a class would hurt.

I have the following one:
- I Am Cute Dress
- Pattern Magic
- Pattern Magic 2
- Feminine Wardrobe
- Stylish Dress Book
- Cut-Up Couture

The last one isn't at all really useful for cosplay but seeing how it's a clothing upcycle book you can pretty much make anything in it to fit any size and has some good projects to just get used to using a machine.

Also does anyone have any recommendations for books? I'm just wanting to collect them for refrencing purposes when I make costumes or clothes.

Does anyone want anything specific from any of those?

Looks like box pleats to me. You can either do it as >>7077447 describes, or if you want the 'inside' of the pleat to be the same there's a lazy way to do it. I suck at explaining and I have a ridiculous cold so bear with me.
>Cut a long strip of your fabric, at least 3x as long as your waistband (I usually do 4x to be sure I have enough).
>Meaure how wide you want your pleat, then fold the fabric back on itself underneath to half the width of the pleat.
>fold fabric back on itself underneath again and do another pleat width
>fold the fabric back again, this time OVER the top, and fold it OVER again where it meets the first pleat
>it helps if you pin the pleats in place as you go so you can go back and fix them if you want/need to before ironing them in place
>repeat until your pleated strip is the same length as your waistband
>sew skirt seam/attach to waistband/iron pleats in whichever order you find easiest or most effective
>suddenly pleated skirt

I know that this explanation sucks, but if you follow it using >>7077529 (the one marked box pleat) as a visual guide, you should be fine.

>> No.7082528

>>7082449
Kind of. A toga is actually just a big sheet of fabric folded around someone, and upon looking at this again, it's not that drape-y.

Maybe you could make your own pattern to better suit what you want. Just need a roll or big sheets of tracing paper, a marker, scissors, and a stand-in or ideally, a dressform of yourself. Then you just pin the paper up and cut/mark it down to what you need it to look like. Take that down and you've got a pattern.

The border should be something like a quilt border, probably. Like another piece of fabric sewn on to the blue stuff.

Hey so I'm making a gathered rectangle skirt with an elastic waistband in the back. How do I make it without it gathering way too much back there when it's done?

>> No.7086085

>>7086073
It's pretty simple maths. The front waistband should be half your waist and the back waistband, with the elastic in it, should gather to just under half your waist. Half the width of the rectangle skirt should be gathered to the front waistband and half to the back, don't worry if it looks too bunched in the front and not gathered enough in the back initially as once you run the elastic through it will gather.

Example:
My waist is 66cm, hip 90cm
My rectangle skirt is going to have 250cm hem circumference for awesome sweet lolita poof
Front waistband is 33cm
Back waistband is 66cm ungathered since I want some extra space to get it over my hips
I gather half the rectangle skirt (125cm) to the front waist band, half to the back

>> No.7086088

So the waistband should be flat and gathered in the front, and flat and ungathered in the back, which is then gathered together from the elastic, right?

Hi everyone! This is my first cosplay and I'm really excited, but I need some sewing pointers. Pic related(Seiga Kaku) is the costume I'm going to me making, from what I can tell she wears a vest over a one-piece dress with poofy sleeves and a white ruffled collar. The bottom of the dress seems to be ruffled. The skirt of her dress also seems pretty poofy and full so I'll be wearing a petticoat underneath.

Though it may seem obvious to some people I'm confused as to where to start, if anyone could lead me in a good direction I would be very grateful.

Thanks!

No. The book with the green diagrams is The Dressmaker's Technique Bible. The larger book with the smaller text is a 1970s edition of the Simplicity Sewing Book (>>7059509)

Unrelated, but the person who took all these scans and spread them on Tumblr, claiming they made them, and got like 23k notes? Fuck you. Just say you got them off /cgl/ or something next time.

I just can't browse tutorial threads because then I'm like "I want to do this now!" and then remember I'm already in the middle of another cosplay and should probably finish that one first.

I want to make a dress with a skirt and a shirt, but see they will be the same color so I want it to look like a one piece dress with no seam, how can I do that without putting something over it like a belt?

>> No.7097432

>>7097366
It is probably cheaper by the time you factor in your time + the cost of materials, especially if you don't already own a sewing machine.

Are you saying you want to make it in two pieces (i.e. a shirt + skirt combo that looks like a dress) or a shirt dress? If it's the former then you won't be able to get away without a seam, you will need a belt or something - if the latter, flare the skirt out from the waist of the shirt part.

If it has three equally lengthed pieces to it getting wider as you go down (3 tier), it's A-line.

If it has two pieces (2 tier), one longer and one shorter, bottom wider than top (pic related), it's cupcake. The shorter piece goes closer to your waist, the longer part hangs down.

For how long it is, that's something you can always alter by making it longer or shorter. Add up the tier heights and that'll tell you how long the petti will go.

>cheaper to buy one than construct one
It depends on what you're getting or working with, your experience level, what you have to buy to get it started, etc.

I don't count time with materials for things I make for myself. I also stockpile fabric from sales and already own a sewing machine. For me, it's cheaper than buying one.

However, if you're going to go buy a good machine and all of your materials at once, it's going to be more expensive than just going and buying a petticoat.

Either way, I recommend getting organza, the cost is worth it. You'd end up paying that much for tulle petticoats over time anyways.

Why do people feel the need to treat /cgl/ like google?

because first of all that's what the thread's for, dipshit
and secondly, you know as well as we do the huge number of seemingly good but shitty tutorials out there. If someone wants to ask cgl let them fuckin ask cgl

I downloaded it earlier. I'm pleased, even though the popups were annoying. I didn't see any .exe files, though, just pictures.

Does anybody here have any advice on how to draft a pattern for a basque waist skirt, as in the Innocent World violin skirt I've posted (I think it's called basque waist?) I cannot find any information on it. I have a rough idea of how to go about it, but how do you make the curve on the skirt line up with the curve of the waistband when you want to gather it? Considering you make the skirt at least 2.5 times fuller than the waist? Thanks in advance!

I would recommend going 3X fuller than waist. You make the "height" of the drop the same but you make the "width" of it 3X longer. The best way to illustrate it is with a "v" shaped drop waist - see the picture.
