What is your opinion on genderbending characters? I saw someone complaining about dressing the outfit around the boobs. I see nothing wrong with it personally, if the cosplay is well done.

How much is it okay to bend the costume around the gender? How much should you bend the gender around the costume? At what point do you become a whore?
I've always wanted to cosplay male characters, and I've always planned costumes around my figure (never done it, poorfag here). Should I just hide what I've got in the interest of staying true to the character, or can I try to make it sexy?

>> No.7050232

I don't like the picture in the OP because I think Assassin's Creeds genderbends should at least TRY and draw a little bit from historical clothing, not just modern sexy clothing with an AC look to it.

>mfw imagining trying to assassinate someone on that getup

>> No.7050260

That's the point I'm trying to make - or rather, the question I'm trying to ask. It's a cosplay of a video game, not a historically accurate or practical assassin's getup.
That being said Ezio's assassin gear is also immensely impractical.

Does it really matter that much?

>> No.7050263

>>7050248
Though the idea of getting hay in that makes me incredibly uncomfy. Imagine hay in the asscrack. Uncomfy. And then the suit rides up and grinds it in... Eugh.

>> No.7050270

the thing is that there's already a female assassin attire, so doing shit like this is idiotic

>> No.7050277

Personally, I don't like them along with special snowflake genderbends because they scream "PAY ATTENTION TO ME." In general, I have a large dislike of cosplays that seem to be made with the intent of getting e-famous

>> No.7050290

I think that if someone can pull off the opposite gender well then its alright to do a genderbend. or if s/he has a design they really like then that's fine too because honestly why not. As long as they aren't trying to win any accuracy contests or something. Imo if genderbend outfits shouldn't be exactly the same as the original because then it'll look like they were just doing a bad job of the original. I think OPs picture is nice. It stays true to the original with just enough modifications to show that its a genderbend. It isn't over the top like topless guy genderbends or booty short bra top girl genderbend.

>> No.7050297

>>7050270
I agree with this - why not just do the female assassin?

But what if I want to do Ezio? Or what if I want to do, say, Ocelot from MGS? I think people should have some leeway. And hey, if it looks good, I like to look at it. I suppose it just comes down to taste, really.

Not everyone dressing up and out wants to be efamous or is an attention whore though. Many are, but it's like a 10 year old drawing girls with cat ears and tails because they think it's cute. She doesn't mean it to be a furry, she just thought, hey, this would totally look awesome.

Of course, if her art's shit, she looks back on it a few years later and oh god what was I thinking

>> No.7050309

For me, the issue is not staying true to the game/show/etc. or character. Considering his personality, would a female Ezio show some cleavage? Sure, I can see that. Would he sacrifice his ability to make assassinations to be that much sexier? I don't think so. Certain TF2 genderbends are my pet peeve because of that. A lot of the time, they don't look ready to charge into battle and shoot others. If Heavy was a woman, I don't think he'd wear heels. That said, I DO think there are male characters who would dress in super revealing and sexy outfits as females.

I really do appreciate cosplays that genderswap while maintaining the spirit of the source. You can definitely base a genderswap around your sexy figure without completely covering up OR stripping it down to a bikini top and high heels though! It just takes some creativity.

>> No.7050362

This; lack of creativity is what bugs me the most about genderbend designs. That and if they're poorly made, or any combination of the two, like the one in op.

Sorry, isn't that just crossplay?
From what I understand, sorry if this is wrong:
Genderbending/swapping - Cosplaying a character of the opposite sex and changing the outfit to match your gender.
Crossplay - Cosplaying a character of the opposite sex without changing the outfit.

>> No.7050477

>>7050465

crossplay is when a cosplayer of x gender plays a character (in a canon outfit or not) of the opposite gender

genderbend is when a cosplayer of either gender cosplays a gender-swapped version of a character.

if you're a chick and you bind and dress up as harry potter you're crossplaying. if you're a chick and you dress up as Harriette Potter and wear the girl's uniform with the glasses and scar, you're cosplaying a genderbend. if you're a dude and you dress up as a female version of harry potter, you're crossplaying a genderbend.

they're not really that related, term wise

these are great. I wish more people realized the dramatic difference ladies cut pants/shirts will make to an outfit in terms of feminizing it without having to have your boobs spilling out. that'd require more cosplayers to realize they need boy-cut pants to begin with, though.

>> No.7050479

>>7050465
I was under the impression that cross play meant that you also tried to look more like the opposite gender - those girls haven't really changed the outfits, but they're not trying to hide their gender, either.

Crossplay involves more than the outfit. Binding chests or stuffing bras, make-up to look more like the other gender, all to really come across as the opposite gender. I say >>7050438 is genderbent because they don't look as masculine as the actual characters, but they wear the proper outfits.

To be fair, if Ubisoft made Assassin's Creed with a girl, it's easy to imagine they would have dressed her in impractically sexy clothes. Because that's how vidya rolls.

>> No.7054227

I just hate that when people do genderbends, the female versions usually automatically get long and/or curly hair. Because every *real* girl has long curly hair, right?

Why does being female automatically mean having long luscious hair? If the character is rough and rowdy, why would that change if they were a girl vs a boy? Having long hair and shit wouldn't really suit them.

Another peeve is automatically wearing heels when crossplaying. Not every girl wears heels all the damn time, so why do people give genderbends heels?

I am planning a genderbend of a couple things, but I'm really taking into account the dress of the females in the series, and slightly altering the original design. And i'm pretty much doing that because I really want to cosplay from the series, but there's like 1 female character and I don't really like her character. But I'll be damned if I'm changing it to hooker heels and curly hair because I'm changing a male character to female.

The thing is, assassin's creed boasts a "hidden history behind real events" so I'd think a cosplay has to be at least a little historically accurate.

It's nice that you want to flaunt what you've got, but I don't think AC is the fandom to go. I mean, there are already female assassin's garbs but if you're going to put on a white corset and a white hood and call yourself Ezio, I think you should expect a level of disrespect. People are going to insult you on the internet and put you in fap folders.

Like, I really hate it when people make a genderbent Altair show a lot of skin since his original costume was supposed to be able to blend in with monks. I think you should keep practicality and realisticness on priority (universe dependant) when making genderbent designs. Also, thinking why they look like that in the first place should be kept in mind.

Quite frankly, I'm tired of slutty genderbends. There's tons of well thought out female TF2 designs that keep the spirit of the classes without slapping heels and a short skirt on them. Here's a good engi one, it's too big to post here http://matarioshka.deviantart.com/art/TF2-FEMALE-ENGINEER-130738633

>> No.7055979

>>7055744
Oh no doubt.
I'm just saying that people don't really show the moderation they should.
Like, young Ezio is a bit of a slut to be fair and I think a female Ezio would probably be a little bit provocative but people go way over the top with it.

>> No.7055984

Pics of other good genderbends in your opinion?
In one of the last progress threads someone called another costume an "actually good" genderbend, though I have no idea what is was from or who it was.

To be fair, I think most people would rather play as a main character people would be more liable to recognize, instead of lesser known ones
I'm not supporting turning those main characters into whore-ish eye candy, though.

I'll never get changing the original pyro outfit if you're a chick. How much MORE attention would you get when you strip out of that thing and you're a hot chick who's been inside that big floppy outfit, instead of just... this?

I hate genderbends because most of them are just girls doing shitty, uncreative versions of popular male characters to get attention. They have some huge gender issues so they can't even think about dressing up as a man, yet they still want the admiration and popularity that cosplaying a popular male character would bring them, so they just do a shitty genderbender version. That way their male fans can still fap to them without feeling gay and getting uncomfortable!

Seriously, every mtf genderbend I've ever seen.

Now that I've seen a reference (don't google it, oh my god dicks everywhere) it's pretty recognizable to the original and there's no more skin showing than in the original. Your thoughts?

I personally think the original looks pretty dumb, but the changes work well. Wish she had kept the chain thing, though.

Looks terrible. Why the fuck would you want to do a genderbent version of a BL character? And does that design really work with the character? (no)

It's almost the same...? Unless there's something crucial about the original outfit?

Sorry, I'm not trying to whiteknight or anything, I'm genuinely curious.

>Why the fuck would you want to do a genderbent version of a BL character?
It's kind of a pointless argument since the answer comes down to "Because they wanted to".
Maybe they made an awful guy, maybe it was an entire genderbent group, maybe they didn't want to make Noiz's dumbass pants. Who cares? I think it's cute, they didn't sluttify it for attention, and it's absolutely recognizable compared to the original. I'd high-five her.

> And does that design really work with the character? (no)
(yes)
The shirt's a little longer, and the pants-over-leggings are now skirt-over-leggings. Other than that it's basically the original outfit. Seconding the regret over the usamodoki belt (and I think there's a button missing), but the keychain thing(?) is cute.

Not just that, I'm pretty sure most of this design is from a popular pixiv illustration... Don't quote me on that but I swear I've seen something similar.

In any case, you sound like a butthurt yaoi fangirl. You'd probably still be upset if they did regular Noiz.

>> No.7056524

>>7056311
Whoops I replied to the wrong post. And if you're the same person as >>7056280 your argument is pretty much invalid as DMMd isn't super popular (it's got a dedicated fanbase, but generally speaking, most con-goers won't have any idea what it is), and that particular genderbend is definitely not something I'd categorize as fap-material. If she shortened the skirt, left off the leggings, and turned the shirt into a crop top or made it cleavage baring? I'd be pissed as hell. But she's as covered as a nun which I think is respectful to the original. Noiz is kind of an implied weeb so the almost-vocaloid looks suits him.

I hate to say it, but you do really sound jealous.

>> No.7056528

Why didn't she just do the original design? Not a yaoi fangirl, I just hate genderbends. It's not like he's that buff of a male, a girl can pull him off well.

>> No.7056535

>>7056528
Who knows? I'm just pretty sure the reasons you stated (for popularity from girls, for attention from guys) don't apply to that one.

> It's not like he's that buff of a male, a girl can pull him off well.
Not always. I think if you're particularly short, that outfit would look beyond awful with the layers. The face is kinda important, let's be straight here.

It just always annoys me that a lot of cosplayers and fan-artists seem to think "female=slutty". Seriously, wouldn't the genderbent version still have the same personality as the original? I'd imagine most genderbent versions would dress pretty much the same as the original, as boring as that would be.

>> No.7057679

>>7050228
sorry but I think it looks good.

Okay it's not accurate, female friendly, OR practical for an assassin, but she isn't an assassin. She's a cosplayer, and she's here to impress people. I mean, when I see good cosplays, I give them bonus points for practicality and accuracy, but most game and cartoon characters are designed pretty ludicrously anyway. Bayonetta wears heals for christ sake.

If the cosplay is flat out tasteless, has tits pouring out and looks ugly then that's a different thing, but I think this is ok

Like a genderbend Dante from devil may cry (NOT THE ABORTION THAT WAS DmC) would probably dress sexy (Bayonetta basicaly IS female Dante) but a Genderbend Detective Gumshoe from phoenix wright sure as fuck wouldnt
