Why are sexism still rampant at Comic or Anime Conventions?
Young women have been groped and sexually harassed and that is disgusting.
Why aren't there stricter rules when it comes to sexual harassment? This is pitiful.

tbh there isn't a whole lot cons can do.
The problem is with our society, not the conventions themselves.

>> No.7043376

It's not that the rules aren't strict enough. Many conventions have a no tolerance policy.

I really hate saying this as a female myself, but I've noticed a lot of girls on the Internet complaining about how they were sexually harassed at a convention, but then go on to say they never reported it at all.
Why let it happen and complain about it on your blog when you could have taken action against it?

This isn't even about feminism. It is about women have a much higher rate of being targeted by pervs than guys do.
>>7043376
A lot of the policies are not enforced strictly. And you can't convict someone who just groped you or slapped your butt in a crowd. he is not going t stand there and wait for the security to come.

Having more securities at a con would help.

If you feel harassed, report that fucker. Or punch them in the face. As a female, I'm tired of all these women expecting everything to be taken care of for them, as if they have no responsibility for their own safety/well being.

Intimidating factor, people are less likely to commit crimes with the present of more officials. Also, If there are more securities I don't need to go to the end of the hallway to report someone who has already fled.

>> No.7043422

I've had people non-consensually handle my ass twice at a con. First time it was smacked, I just threw a glare back and they guy shrugged and pretended he didn't know what happened. Second time (different guy) my ass was grabbed. I simply said, "Don't touch my butt," and he backed off.

Report it or handle it yourself. Bitching online after the fact doesn't do anything and gives these people the opportunity to freely touch others again and again, until they are reported or otherwise dealt with.

Not saying we shouldn't talk about it, but the discussion we should be having is about encouraging more people to report misconduct, or at the very least not pretend to be okay with it as it happens.

Just because you don't mind being felt up by a stranger doesn't mean the rest of us should just deal with it.

Well, first of all, those people who cannot understand that sexual harrassment is not ok should be thrown in jail. Second, I propose the female-only cons as a sort of safe haven for women and girls who have been victims of, or are afraid of sexual abuse. It is by far not a solution to the entire problem, but it would at least provide some relief. Of course there will still be other cons that allow all genders.

Statistics are only good when you can apply them to specific scenarios. Cons are not the suburbs of Detroit or Cancun during spring break. Sexual harassment happens on different levels in different places. Personally, I have only once been made to feel unsafe by a male at a con. By a female though, it ranks in the double digits. Glomping, groping, lifting my skirts under the pretense of "How is it made?" all are inappropriate actions to take, even if you know someone. However, because we are both female and omigosh-fans-of-the-same-thing, it becomes okay? No. It doesn't. Take your statistics elsewhere, because I'm telling you - girls are more likely to start unwanted contact at cons.

>Why are sexism still rampant at Comic or Anime Conventions?

Beats me. I'm simply a male, and I get blanketed as a sexist no matter what I do/say. Anytime I try to explain something technical to a woman about social issues they condemn it as "Mansplaining" because the stupid whores can't be bothered to think for themselves and solve their own problems.

>Young women have been groped and sexually harassed and that is disgusting.

This happens everywhere in the world. And less so at conventions than you actually are imagining. It's literally a "non-issue" people are bringing up to bandwagon. It's one of those things you need to deal with personally, because there is no real way to enforce it otherwise.

>Why aren't there stricter rules when it comes to sexual harassment? This is pitiful.

All conventions have policies in place for sexual harassment.

What it sounds like you want is guards patrolling the aisles and beating mean in the kneecaps if they so much look at a girl in a revealing costume without her consent.

And since that's not going to happen, either deal with it yourself, or stop dressing that way.

But I'm reasonably sure you've never been harassed by a hot guy. Since you are probably a legbeard.

Shit happens because conventions tend to attract hilariously desperate and socially inept people. As a few other may have pointed out, it's not just women that get harassed and groped at cons. I've been sexually harassed at a con before, with a girl basically saying no one will believe me if I get security "because oh come on, who are they going to believe - a big strong tough man or sweet innocent me"

Good thing con security believed a guy who sucked it up and admitted a girl was making him uncomfortable.

The point I'm trying to make is that conventions attract a large, wide variety of people, ranging from polite teenagers to jackass adults. There's always a few people at conventions who don't seem to think what they're doing is wrong or even worse, thinking that the size of crowds and short duration of cons will prevent anything from happening to them.

I'm sorry, but I just think like 90% of these cases are grossly exaggerated because drama. I've been going to cons for over 10 years, many times in more revealing costumes and I've never been groped or harassed (in b4 ur just fat waah. Im not and that excuse just proves how bullshit so many of these claims are)
When it comes to rape, Im of the attitude that I believe the victim basically no matter what. Rape is a felony and a really serious offense. I don't think the vast majority of human beings are insane enough to actually falsely accuse rape.

But, I've seen creeper threads on this board with people getting their panties in a bunch because some ugly autist said they were cute or because someone probably accidentally bumped into them. But because it's cosplay and attention-getting attitudes mixed with people who often have a lot of anxiety OR are maybe just looking for some sympathy/attention (though I think this is extremely rare) winds up in this shit being massively over-reported. Sometimes its honestly just because a lot of cosplayers are socially retarded and take everything as harassment because they're nervous (I have social anxiety, I understand this) and some, probably very little, is just pure attention seeking. A lot of times cons just inspire that feeling that makes a lot of people get all excited and they think it's okay to touch everyone but fucking christ the same shit happens to men with squeeing fangirls all the time. It's not okay, but people act like it's equivalent to rape. If a guy or girl brushing against you is the same as rape then so is glomping.

I had a guy try to hit on me/accuse me of grabbing his cock at a con because I little just brushed into him in a crowded hallway. People are freaking out over nothing a lot.

I'm not saying real, honest groping and harassment doesn't happen, of course it does and with some frequency or that it's in any way okay, but it IS blown way out of proportion.

Now I am more inclined to believe that a lot of these people may have leered at you or asked for a picture and accidentally brushed your boob or costume or smelled bad or whatnot, which is what socially deficient people do, they make things weird.

Now, if this is the level of creepiness you are complaining about, I don't think it's worth complaining to staff about.

If however, they are actively sexually assaulting you, such as grabbing your butt during a picture, smelling you, rubbing you, etc this is clearly a problem.

As for the sexism, that is a cultural issue and requires an answer I do not have.

Listen, if you go to a convention dressed like an anime character people will stare, ALL PEOPLE, this includes the ugly guys. Its pathetic to feel molested when a below average guy takes your picture of stares at you, not to mention you are acting.like an entitled brat who thinks "only the cuties can oogle me!"

Seriously, grow up. I cosplay cirno, and i get a lot of attention from men, many of them ugly /jp/ piggu, but do i get all upset? No. Why? Because im at a conventure in costume, if they want to stare or take pictures its their right.. Hell, thats part if the fun of being at a con is posing for pics.

Ugly otaku are the same as anyone else, if you are good looking and cosplaying his waifu its obvious he will stare. Thinking he shouldnt is rediculous! It's true. I really think part of the problem with cons is the 'it's all in good fun' mentality, some that we see in this thread. So many people think haha it's a joke and then they can just brush it off, and if someone is uncomfortable with it then they are just spoilsports ruining fun or buttmad.

I know one of my friends (dressed as a poor-looking trap at the time) had some guy grab his dick in the elevator at Ohayocon once, but haha it's juts funny right...? I guess I'm glad he's okay with it, but I hope that guy doesn't go on to touch someone who is uncomfortable with it.

I'm not a very touchy-feely person, and it makes me uncomfortable. I wish I would have reported it, but I was just under the impression it was 'con fun' like being hit by a yaoi paddle or glomped- which were OK at the time.

Maybe my parents should have known better, but my parents didn't particularly care that much about me at the time I guess. I was with my grandmother at the convention. She should have been watching me, but we were chewed out at a meetup because I was told it was 'weird' to bring my grandmother, or that I needed to take care of her instead of being at a meet.
