i used fishing wire for mine. it worked at first but then after a while the string got caught in the hole and kept it stationary while the rest of it spun. i didnt noticed it did this until one of them snapped. theirs probably snapped because the string was either shit/attached poorly or because they had it so close to their hands it just doesnt do the string too well.

Okay, I figure I'll post this here.

I'm putting together a Meulin cosplay, and while her hair has quite a bit of volume, I keep getting people telling me to keep my wig without the teasing. Truthfully, the only thing I fear is that it'll look too "scene kid"-ish like a lot of Meulins do. I'm just torn and afraid the wig's coming off like that after a few days of obsessing.

Opinions? Also, circle over face because three in the morning with shit makeup thrown on.

A lot have moved on or just cosplay MSPA to hang out with their friends. Cowbutt Crunchies & Pyropi still churn out new stuff constantly and Saccharinesylph and Yaexrae have both come out with at least one nice cosplay this summer. There's been some good stuff from less popular people or pretty tiers but it feels like things are slowing down.

I actually ended up buying two from ebay while I was drunk. It was actually super thin and that's most of the second wig sewn into it. Still not sure if it was worth only paying $25 for it since the wig is really small on my average sized head. The seller was karenqianyun if you have a small head and don't mind sewing two together.

I can see your point. At the same time, otakon would be an opportunity to make something cool and summer friendly. It seems to me that a lot of MSPA either didn't adapt or weren't up to the challenge. Besides, I wore bodypaint for an unrelated costume and it went fine, didn't sweat it off, just had to stay indoors until it got cooler.

Throwing out there a brilliant idea I saw a Daenerys do: she stuck one of those cool gel patches to their back, underneath the wig. Only reason I saw it was because she brushed it aside to detangle it. When she put it back I had no idea it was there. To everyone bitching about people choosing not to paint: get over it. Heat affects paints, everyone should know that. If you want to paint in the hot weather, go ahead, but no one else should be shamed because they're not. Different paints work differently for everyone, since everyone has a different heat tolerance and skin type. Some people want to not paint and instead wear summer cosplays and have fun in the sun. Sorry you don't have a bunch of Otakon trolls to look at. Get over it.

nice first try but they are a bit long. the base is too thin and the paint is mediocre. i dont know how to avoid cracks too much but you can fill cracks, depending the severeness of the crack, with superglue and then use spackle to fill the rest and sand smooth.

Go with a wire and tin foil base with paperclay over it. It's incredibly sturdy and won't crack. You'll have to sand a bit for it to be nice and smooth, but it's worth it. I hate model magic, it cracks and breaks way too easily.

not the same anon but I'll list the things that bother me about the cosplay:

-he needs to blend the fins in, they look like earmuffs

-the horns look lumpy and they sit at the wrong angle

-his scarf is too short and needs to be ironed flat.

-the pants are just plain wrong.

-he needs to fix his hairline because right now it looks like his roots are showing because of the gray smudging

-he should get a wig, while his hair is dyed and styled well it still looks limp and greasy in that lighting whereas a wig keeps the shape and stays fresher

-the symbol is too big


That said, I agree with the other anons in that he has the most perfect Eridan face I've ever seen and the potential to be absolutely fucking awesome

But I concur on a wig- if he doesn't want to redo his earfins I'd recommend some kind of sideburns, or blend them into his skin a bit. They do look a bit tacked on.

The length of the scarf looks fine to me because the long ones always look weird to me? But it does need to be ironed.

The pants' stripes are a bit skinny, but props on having them NOT be skinny jeans and I feel so hard about trying to find pants like that so frankly I'd let it slide.

I dunno what the cape is made out of? But the back needs to be a bit stiffer. Shoes are cute!

People are saying the symbol's too big... I don't actually mind that? I kinda like larger symbols. Makes them look smaller/13.

Can't really speak about the prop because damn I am shit at props.

The first major point of error for most people seems to be shape and proportion. I usually draw out the shape of my horns on paper and compare them to reference pictures and the size of my head in front of the mirror before starting to sculpt anything. Whichever clay you decide to use, make sure you have some way of getting it smooth afterwards, like spackling to fill in cracks and sandpaper to smooth out bumps or shape abnormalities. Even if you plan on doing some weird stylised texturing try to have a smooth base.

As for painting, gradients or block colors are again up to you, but remember that the base color is orange, not red. For both I would recommend doing a base coat of yellow, maybe over some gesso if the clay doesn't take paint well. If you're doing block colors then use masking tape to section off each color, and make sure the pattern is symmetrical across both horns. I prefer to mount the horns directly onto a headband with screws and/or glue (hot is okay, epoxy/construction even better), and them poke them out through holes in the wig, but you might have more luck with mounting them on a headband with screws that poke through, or just bobby pins if they are very, very small.

getting a lens with an aperture bigger than average at f/4, so like f/2, is going to be expensive. like it's a specific, big jump.

personally, for most of the photography i do at cons, i use an f/4 wide angle because i don't like using a lot of space for shoots or even snapshots walking around (in addition to a portrait lens of course)

if you really care about bringing gear to compensate for a shitty location, i'd say an off body flash is totally worth it. but it's still not going to fix the problem that other guy was having where he completely missed the focus and ended up with too much noise. you still need to know what you're doing.
