SCG are looking to do something new that hasn't really been done before in the cosplay community.

We don't earn any money from the work we do (which is quite a bit considering we run the FB page, the website and we also put money into the shoots we do, and take time out of our full time jobs to do the shoots and get them edited)
and we do nothing but share around the work of cosplayers of all types.

You don't have to chip in, but I wouldn't say that this is just to 'elevate their own fame' thats not our motive.

Its to help bring the community together. Have you ever been to one of our booths at a convention and spoken to us? Probably not... You'd know that we aren't like that.

We are also already international by the way. We have photographers in various countries.

We aren't keeping it for our own pockets at all, most of it will be used on budgeting for the sets and props for each shoot, the flights, accomodation, ticket prices for expo, larger stall space for expo so people can have free signings etc

The remainder will go on launching our online magazine in which we will try our very best to help share the good in the cosplay community and to keep everyone updated with news, reviews, tips and q&a sessions with different cosplayers.

We are bringing them all to the UK because the idea is to have each shoot with multiple cosplayers, not individuals. It works a lot better for everyone to come to one place, as we discussed whilst spending a few months planning this. We are using two photographers to do the work - Daniel and Martin Wong, both very very talented guys, so its not a case of doing each shoot where the girls are located, because we want the same kind of theme and style all the way through. Hidrico will be retouching all the images as well. Plus, we will be working with Sneaky Zebra on a video Collab which requires the girls to be together...

I can't really say too much more without going into secrets but we discussed with all of the girls together on what would be best to suit both them and us.

Cosplay for a cause did a calender properly before and they donated their money. Please tell us how they didn't properly do it.

No one will fucking care even if you go to MCM. MCM no one bothers to get tickets properly and if they do it's only to buy stuff or the masquerade or some select panels.

This is making me angry. Cosplay is a hobby. No one should beg for money for this kind of shit like you are doing. You set it up yourself as it is a hobby and something you do on the side that you enjoy. Do you see any of the Japanese cosplayers starting kickstarters for their photoshoots? No, and they still manage to make some amazing photos.

You are contributing to this current cancer in the cosplay world that tries to make this more than just something people do as enjoyment and making it more about money and fame. If they want to go to MCM, they pay for it themselves just like every other cosplayer who wants to go to another con in another country. They want a good photoshoot? They can contact the photographers themselves and pay for a shoot.

What gives you the right to ask for this when thousands of other cosplayers sort these kind of things out themselves anyway? People who put their own money into this? This is just as bad as that Wild Places thing and you'll probably produce the same shitty results.

Also some of these cosplayers/costumes are so mediocre. Why would anyone pay to have that super generic and lackluster Misty come over from Australia?

This has been a long rant but I am really getting annoyed with these kind of projects.

I can put things like school events, work schedules, birthdays and whatever on a physical calendar and everybody in the house can stop and look at it whenever they wonder about scheduling. I'm an older cosplayer who has been around for a while. I knew of cosplay before these kind of projects existed. Do I agree with them? In all honesty, no. Would I knock others for wanting to back projects like this? Nope. At the end of the day its up to people how they spend their money.

Yes, I do feel that projects like this are changing the attitudes of cosplayers in general and quite often not in a good way. I have seen a lot of these kind of projects of late and they have made other cosplayers feel less special because they are not part of a project like this. In many ways they have contributed to the nastier attitudes that some cosplayers have. In some cases it can spawn elitism which I'm not a fan of.

I'm not going rage against the project itself and those who chose to back it. In my opinion that wouldn't do any good. I personally would like to see more projects that involve local talents. Maybe something that does donate to a good cause as well. It is an interesting idea but I don't think its been executed well.

At the end of the day no one can stop projects like that except maybe the copyright holders depending on the costumes the cosplayers do. As long as people can still enjoy cosplay without feeling horrible about it its fine.

And it's alright, I consider myself pretty average. There's only one elaborate costume I'd love to make and I can't afford it. I also lack the drive to make something that is beautiful but from as God awful a film as Snow White and the huntsmen. Laura and Ben had that playing to look up references and I actually wanted to kill myself. Worst film I ever had the misfortune of watching.

Anyway competitions in the UK are awful. Hyper Japan was a complete and utter cake walk for Laura, Ben and Lex. Lex even said "I really should have been beaten by somebody".

Don't get me wrong, if there was ever a worthwhile competition, with say Xae, Tab, Karen, Laura, Lex etc all in it I'd be fucking there with popcorn, but it never happens.

Anyway that's a tangent I suppose. The reason why there aren't more UK cosplayers is simply because it was built around the concept of 'unite'. It just seemed more interesting, I guess. That's about all the explanation I can give being it wasn't my initial idea. We are bringing them all to the UK because the idea is to have each shoot with multiple cosplayers, not individuals. It works a lot better for everyone to come to one place, as we discussed whilst spending a few months planning this. Completely agree. We have quite a few amazing cosplayers who get overlooked by photographers. Especially photographers behind projects like this. Yes, I know that 'sex sells' but I for one, don't want it as a major aspect to a hobby. I personally enjoy the hobby for its creativity and like-minded people.

I’ve been two minds about this Kickstarter ever since it launched.

The negatives.
>The Mission Statement.

Is flawed. It doesn’t work with the product. ‘Cosplayers United’ doesn’t work as a tag line for a product that features only a small percentage of the range of cosplayer that exists. The product is for a very select group of cosplayer so in my mind the tag line doesn’t grab me and in many ways is misleading.

>The end product costs.

In a potential market that has already featured other cosplayer calendars it doesn’t measure up to the other prices/costs. £30GBP is quite a high price for a calendar. That alone doesn’t make it a viable product.

>The costs

While the project does outline the costs I find them to be unnecessary. This project could have been easily achieved on far less expenditure. In turn this would lead to a more viable product which people might be more willing to part with the money for.

>Restriction on the Theme

I do get the theme is ‘Sexy Cosplay Girls’ but with the models that have been selected they are not covering the wide range of what could be considered sexy. I for one love a lady to be wearing well made corsetry and to be reasonably covered so that her curves are shown but there is an air of mystery. I have a feeling that this kind of ‘sexy’ would not be covered and that most models will be wearing tight fitting or next to nothing.

I think its great that she has conviction in the project she is part of but I feel that the way she presents herself is unprofessional and doesn’t set a good image for the product. Judging on how she has responded on here and to other critiques on Facebook she has been very antagonistic. It sparks up more hate which in turn has put people like myself off backing such a Kickstarter. Every creative project, not matter what it is, will have some negative feedback. How the people behind the project respond to the feedback is crucial just as much as the project itself.


On the other side there is a positive and that is that the girls involved get to be part of a project that they are very excited about. I know a few of them and I have seen how excited they are to be part of it. I am happy for them as it has showcased them and made people aware of them through SCG and Sneaky Zebra’s (they are joined them on the video aspect of the project) Facebook pages and websites .

While I am happy for those friends there isn’t enough positives to have me interested in backing such a project. Whether or not they succeed will be in the hands of all those who do decide to back the project.

Anyway kickstarters are dumb for charity. Always donate to the source. To say '$27k could do this' is all well and good but it's not one person spending all that, it's a bunch of people spending smaller amounts on what they'd normally spend on superfluous things anyway.

And if we're going to make that argument, the majority spends small amounts on superfluous things. Making people feel bad for that is futile. What is spent on kickstarters would likely never go to charity anyway.
