I'm long out of a dorm room, but my apartment space is tiny. Dumping anyway for the same kind of question.

I'm especially looking for some shabby chic items like bed sheets, comforters, and useful decor. I know that Target as some things, but my bank broke just looking at the prices of the Shabby Chic collection.

>>7005009
Btw, you might want to filter your search because most dorm beds are going to be on XL twin sizes, not regular twin sizes. You're probably best going to have to find any color of bedspreads in the size you need, but get a prettier/loliable cover and pillow sham.

thanks for the advice. My battle plan for the bed is: huge fluffy duvet with cute duvet cover on top, really heavy crochet blanket below that, comfy sheets below that with fluffy ass pillow, and then if it is necessary some kind of down or foam underlayer for extra cloud qualities. <3

Uuuhhh, this is the anon you're replying to, I just mentioned Target. I've been there so many times. In fact, I've "liked" Rachel Ashwell's page so I can oogle at stuff I cant afford, but want.

I'm looking for a more affordable option because I'd rather spend a hundred dollars on a dress, not a bedding set.

Sounds good.

I found my dorm bed pretty comfortable and I think my university changes them out every school year. I'm jealous of my dorm-roommate's bed though. I finally got a foam top for support because the bed provided by the apartment is a piece of shit (literally - I moved in and the wheels were broken, so I had to get a new mattress).

Anyway, have you gotten any idea on storage units or how much space you've got (in terms of dorm layout; are you sharing the space?)?

You are right. And they're a little bit cheaper than Target's Shabby Chic collection. I'm in a limbo with decor. I love bright, multi-colored stuff with interesting patterns, but then I love and had in mind to make a little lolita-oasis with whites and pinks and roses.

I can't really lolify my apartment since I don't think my husband would want a girly apartment, but maybe some people could share some loli inspired bathrooms? Our bathroom is painted a lighter blue with a white wooden beam ceiling. I have to fix the paint on the ceiling since it looks like shit.

I'll be sharing a room/closet/bathroom with two other people! I will have my bed (hopefully I won't end up with the top bunk, I'm praying for the singular non-bunk bed so I can get bed leg extenders for extra under-bed space) and one pretty typical dorm room desk to call my own, plus some space in the walk in closet. I'm not planning on keeping any of my bathroom stuff in the bathroom itself if I can help it, haha.

Unfortunately the place I'm living at (it's a coop) has a really shitty website with no pictures of the building I'm hoping to stay in, and I only got a brief look around so I don't have a good idea of how much space there will be. It'll be pretty cramped, though. The school I'm going to is really overcrowded, haha.

Ah. Yeah, definitely use a shower caddy and shower shoes (flip flops). I didn't loft my dorm bed because I thought it would be a hassle, but I hope that you get the opportunity to.

Ugh, I hate looking through magazines and other images for dorm-life/decorating ideas. They make these overpriced spaces look luxurious and big when they're really not.

I would say that this is probably one of the most realistic examples of trying to decorate a dorm in a feminine manner, although, if it were up to me, I would just have my desk and some milk crates for storage.

I think it's more the colors then anything. We both personally prefer a warmer color palette. Our bedding is red, black, and brown. If anything, we'd probably have to go more gothic or classic for the rest of the apartment. Especially since our ceiling is brown and our walls are tan.

Or, you can do lots of smaller rugs to designate different areas, if the room is of a larger size.

My dorm was fucking awful, and we had to pay $1200 a month for a filthy, tiny space we had to share with several roommates that we generally weren't compatible with.
The carpet was so nasty and stained that nobody dared to walk around without shoes on, everything was generally broken, and we had bullshit rules to where they were treating us like middle school kids.
The landlord is a huge bitch, at that, who just sits around smoking pot all day.
We couldn't have anyone over - not even family - unless the landlord first met them and approved of them visiting, and all guests had to be gone by midnight.

At that, you have to give a 12-day notice before someone can stay the night, you can only have 1 person over (even if family), you have to be with them at ALL times, and you had to sign them in and out of the building. ID was required at all times.

There was this one girl that i had to room with that I have an entire fucking horror story from since she stalked me, pinned me to a fucking couch at one point and tried to make out with me, suck on my nipple, etc while I screamed to my other roommates to help and get her off (at which they yelled at me for being noisy, since it might get them in trouble for smoking hookah in the dorms)
Not only did the landlord only put me in a new room and not punish her at all, but that girl also would constantly throw stuff and spit on mine and my new roommate's door.
Which they refused to clean because 'it is technically our door, not the landlord's door.'
We swear there was shit mixed into what was thrown at the door.

Ugh, I bought the Eclipse "noise reducing, black out" curtains, and they don't do a very good job with reducing my noisy neighbors talking outside my window, and when there was day light, I still got plenty of light flooding through my room - not to mention that the pinks ones I bought look REALLY bad against the grey walls (I'm not supposed to paint them).

This is totally going against my tiny goal of making a shabby chic/lolita oasis in my boring apartment. Any suggestions for better quality blackout curtains, or any tutorials for making my own?

I wonder if I should get that fabric, a layer of black to put right behind it, and then a pretty decorative fabric, or will it be just as efficient with the pretty decorative fabric (which I'm hoping to get in a lighter color/wall paper design) and the lining?

Any tips on makingn a room with wood furniture look brighter? It ranges from medium to dark in color... I already have basic bedding sets. I was just thinking about getting something prettier. I thought it would be nice to create some kind of lolita oasis within my boring apartment. Yes, I've long left the dorms and I'm in my final year in college. I'm quite aware of what I need when I'm done here.

I think I'll just use what I have and make the most of it. I think I need clothes more right now. I've muddied up and worn down all of my canvas shoes. I could definitely use some business type clothing, and if I want to get more involved with my new found community, I don't think it would hurt to rebuild my lolita wardrobe with a bunch of basics. I can see why this is so frustrating for you, OP. There's not a lot of examples that would constitute as loliable. Most dorm decorating items for girls are typically colorful and involve heavy use of exotic patterns (which is cool and I kind of want to do that, but I also LOVE shabby chic). It doesn't help that for some reason, marketers and designers think that dorms are really big when in real life, you're sharing a space with people who don't always share your interests, and the space is limited in size and permanent structures. Okay, so I had an idea and I was wondering if it was a good one.
So, my bed's going to be pretty bare because long story short I'm picky, I don't want to spend a lot of money and I don't have a lot of time left.
I was wondering if you guys thought it'd be a good ideas to DIY a throw pillow. I have some scrap fabrics left over from cosplay (gotta see, I may have a ditsy floral but I doubt it) and I have a TON of really cool lace I thrifted (non scratchy + not cheap actually pretty good IMO) I was probably going to take the batting out of a bed pillow I currently have that is super flat and then cut that in half then double layer it so the pillow'll be poofy. Then of course sew the cover around that.
I was wondering if this sounded like a good idea/any other DIYs I should think about? I have a ton of supplies.

You are a fucking idiot then.

1.) You're not the OP, the fact that somebody else posted similar content a few minutes after you is no reason to be a jackass. Not every reply in a thread is meant to please your nor do they need to be approved by you either. You do not own this thread and you're not even the OP.

3.) The attitude of "well I won't spend money on ___ because I need to save up for my Lolita" is the kind of shit that shows maybe you can't afford the hobby. Try finding quality sheets anywhere that aren't going to run you about a hundred dollars. You're like the jackasses who want to find a good bra for under $50. Maybe you should be shopping at thrift stores.

I also came here to post Shabby Chic. It cost me $80 for the full bedding set, new, but only because there was an error at the cash register. The stuff is pretty nice, very soft. I like to use dusting powder in the bed to make it smell really nice. It fit on my dorm bed perfectly and the pillow sham is made of a thicker fabric than the normal pillowcase, but it's still pretty soft.

>> No.7021566

>>7021359

Not everything needs to be decorated, but:

Depending on the stainless steel, it might be magnetic. Find out if it is. If it is, use cute magnets.

Try wrapping ribbons around the thin parts.

Try using washi tape around the base and on the edges of the mirror.

Figure out a way to glue some small cute cabochons on. Right now, resin roses are really in because of the Givenchy collection. Try adding a few clusters of roses to match your room.

>>7018943

Just buy a pillow to use as a base. More batting =/= fluffier, automatically. It could also just end up large and densely packed. Get a cheap throw pillow and add onto it, don't make it from scratch.

Overall, I'd highly suggest not making or planning a dorm room that is OTT, and waiting until you get to the dorm room itself before actually deciding on stuff. Maybe your dorm is the one room that has terrible blue/teal carpeting instead of nice wood floors. Maybe it's shaped weird. At some colleges, you can see them in advance, but in some, you can't.

If you have a roommate, I also suggest waiting. It's really weird to have a room that's half OTT Lolita/girly/whatever, and the other half "normal".

Also, I hate to be a bitch, but, you know how there's always that one asshole otaku that makes the rest look bad? The one who has a room covered in posters? A lot of OTT rooms are like that. If you want to make friends and not be that weirdass in the poofy dress, I'd suggest toning it down and maybe not wearing Lolita to class or going overboard with a OTT room. If it's more similar to a storefront for BtSSB than a Pinterest page, people might talk.

>> No.7021573

>>7012259

Try temporary wallpaper. If the walls are still in okay condition and the paint is kinda new, check out stuff like Tempaper or the Sherwin-Williams stuff. It's wallpaper that goes on like a wall decal and comes off really easily too.

>>7011132

I'm going to guess it's standard dorm furniture. Get a blotter and other nice accessories for the top of your desk, especially in pastel colors. Get a rug for the floor, obviously, in a brighter color. Add curtains (normal curtains, not a canopy) if you can, maybe add some string lights if that's your thing, and put up posters. If you can afford new bed stuff, get it in a nice color too. If your pastels match or look good together, you should be fine. If you're in a dorm where everyone has shitty wood furniture, don't worry, most people's rooms will look worse than yours.

So I'm looking at this leaf canopy. The way you put it up is screw the pouch thing to the wall, then just slip the canopy into the pouch. Now clearly, I can't put holes into my dorm wall, but the container store sells 'adhesive screws'. Would that be good enough?

Any suggestions for a classic bedroom that's not pink x cream? I'm looking for deeper, richer colors like browns, navy, burgundy, green, etc. I'm not in a dorm, but my apartment bedrooms aren't exactly the biggest and while I do like florals, I really don't want a pastel bedroom.

My dorm room wasn't going to be OTT or even really sweet really. Mainly classic or with some lolita inspired elements. Maybe I should've put 'pic not related' or something?
But yeah, I'm just worried about waiting because once I get there I won't have access to all of my fabric or supplies. (too much to fit) Luckily I'll be bringing a sewing machine if everything goes well so if I find some stuff later down the road I can alter it.

Not necessarily otaku, but I'm worried that my roommate and I's sides of the room will clash a lot in terms of interests. She's into bright colours and bird prints and nature inspired stuff. I'm into black, white, pale pink, nude and lace stuff. I'm very simplistic. Also weird art and prints. We're both artists, but... 2 different spectrums of artist? Idk I'm worried about this situation in general.

>> No.7026585

>>7026424
The apartments were worse off than the dorms where I went to uni. You got your own, confined space with a door you could lock, sure, but it was a tiny room with barely enough room for the bed, chest of drawers and desk you were assigned. The ceilings were also too low to loft the bed over your desk, so you were pretty much stuck with shuffling around a tiny cubicle. I only knew one person who moved into one of those apartments and didn't move out at the end of a single semester, and that was because she was never there and spent most of her time at her boyfriend's house off campus.

I lived in the dorms for two years quite happily, then moved to a house off campus for two years, and lived alone in a renovated "apartment" room in another house for my final year.

OP here, I'm not actually living in a dorm, I'll be living in the school's coop. Needless to say, it's very similar to dorms, only with more bureaucracy, no cleaning ladies, and much more relaxed rules as far as decorating goes. It's really cheap, especially considering that you only have to do 4 hours of chores per week. If we say there's about 11 weeks in a quarter, and I'm saving $6k per quarter (compared to dorms), that's about $140/hr that they're paying me to either do household chores that I do for free right now, or even better to sit at a desk and file paperwork.

It's actually ridiculously easy to find damask stuff, so maybe that'd fit your needs. Maybe damask in brown and white, brown in black, or black and white? You could also try the guy's sections for more basic stuff like plaid. Or, just check out the adult's section instead of a dorm or teen section of a site.

You probably won't be able to find lacy, fluffy, girly stuff in those colors. However, honestly, as a college student, you're probably going to have a shitty bed anyway. I had a captain's bed last year that was nice, but I know other people that had frame beds that were hard to make look cute. Bed skirts shams, etc. are fine on the department store floor, but in a dorm room, are extremely impractical.

Also, figure out where people are going to sit when they come over. If they're sitting on your bed, do you really want them to muss up something that's going to take you longer to fix? Or hard to wash?

As cute as a lot of the rooms linked are, some are definitely more children's rooms that adult's rooms. Do you want to be known as that weirdass on campus with the OTT room? Try adding some more mature elements like a bookcase to your room to offset the kiddie parts.

Don't assume your room is going to look a certain way until you go there. If you get a nice kawaii pink bedding set and your floor is navy blue, that shit is not gonna look very nice.

Sometimes, the cleaning ladies clean bathrooms. Sometimes, they do not. Example:

My college had public bathrooms on each hall. They were cleaned by the staff, as were the hallways.

My sister's college had public bathrooms on each hall. They were cleaned by the students who left notes asking for certain cleaning supplies on a door for staff. Staff would get them supplies and leave them in the closet for students to use. Staff still cleaned hallways.

UIUC has private bathrooms for each suite for the graduate dorms. Everyone shares with one or two people but none exit into the hallway, they actually connect two rooms kinda. However, even though they are "private" suite bathrooms, they are still cleaned by cleaning staff instead of students.

And, in some colleges, there are dorms made up entirely of suites with private bathrooms, which are cleaned by the students themselves and not by staff.

My college cleaning ladies come in weekly (I think) to clean our bathroom and counter space in our kitchen area. They just don't go into our rooms. Each "room" has two separate bedrooms, one bathroom and one kitchen area with a sink and fridge.
