For me, Handmaid. It was my slowly-derailing project for a while before becoming a total progress trainwreck. I bought wigs and half-made a huge pair of horns (they just need the final layer of Model Magic and paint) but was eventually disheartened by not thinking I could match up to all the really attractive people who'd already completed her.

Yeah, those. I read that they're not only expensive (over a few hundred bucks?) I also read that they're difficult to see in. Yet, part of me feels like no Captor cosplay is complete without them. That said, /r/ any Captor cosplays that DO have this. Not counting the one half dead Sollux that has pure white and pure black eyes, although that was pretty cool too.

As for your Handmaid... Got any progress pics at least?

You have to be careful not to wear them for too long (any more than 4 hours is risky), because they block oxygen to your eyes. And the process of putting them in and taking them out does NOT look like a lot of fun. But if you've got the dedication, it looks pretty awesome.

I like how this looks overall, but for the green edge on the bottom of the dress, I think that bias tape would have been a better choice than ribbon. Bias tape has more stretch to it and wouldn't pucker. While ribbon works fine for areas around the top, where it doesn't have to bend much, it gets distorted when forced to go along a curve.

Also, if you find red/blue scleras that are solidly colored, they will cover your pupil and you won't be able to see at all. You will be totally blind in them! The contact pictured is not a sclera but you can see the general idea. Apologies if this is way more information than you needed!

It can work with some people on the face, but I definitely don't suggest it, especially if this is your first time doing PAX. The way PAX works is that since it peels off, areas of high motion and creasing (such as the inside of your elbow, and certain parts of your hand) are more likely to come off from the compression and stretching. So the majority of your face, especially your forehead and mouth, will have a lot of movement, and will cause your PAX to peel. Not to mention that you have to scrub fairly hard to remove it so it'd be pretty painful on your soft face.

Also, PAX is a BITCH to get into your hair. If you put it on your face you could lose your eyebrows and eyelashes. If you have dry skin, try Ben Nye, if you have oily skin try Snazaroo, if you have delicate skin, aim for something more expensive, such as Kyrolan aquacolour, or maybe Mehron.

So I'm doing a wv cosplay and I'm trying to cover as many bases as possible as far as communication goes
Other than body language,I know the ASL alphabet and some basic signs + morse code for a little serenity I'm going to have sitting on my shoulder activated by a button hidden in the morphsuit in my hand
What else could I do to make communication easier without ~Breaking character~

I'm not the prospecting WV but no. Stuff like this is usually extra, acting fun. You don't have to act in character when you're cosplaying, and you definitely don't have to make an led light on your shoulder be able to do morse code (because that is hella impressive).

I learned a bit of sign language when I cosplayed Kurloz, but that doesn't mean you can't cosplay Kurloz because you don't know asl, you know?

From what I understand there's one person somewhere out there who drew all 4 prospit kids in "Crocker Corp" gear and that's where the idea game from. It's essentially an AU, where the only thing different is some outfits.

This is a dictionary for signs, and it has some basic phrases. http://www.aslpro.com/

If anything, I would recommend practicing pantomime or exaggerating your gestures. WV does seem to be the more communicative of the carapaces, so maybe using big gestures would put that across. Sign language doesn't always lend itself to being understood by non-ASL users, so the chance of someone understanding it without prior knowledge is slim.

As for where to learn, if you just want to learn vocab you can simply google it and helpful videos will show up. I'm the Kurloz/asl anon and I personally got a "Sign Language for Dummies" book because my friend knows asl and I find it interesting separate from cosplay.

A huge part of ASL is that the sentences are highly shortened, from "I want something to eat" to "I-want-eat", and includes a LOT of body expression/facial expression (the latter being another reason why I don't completely understand how having asl will lends itself to a WV cosplay)

This is one of my biggest pet peeves in Homestuck cosplay because Karkat never even does this in canon and he has so many more interesting facial expressions! John's the one that does it in canon iirc and I've yet to see a John cosplayer make that pose. I think it'd be kind of funny if they did.

Pic related, I've recruited my father to cosplay Sepulchritude to my Demimonde Semigoddess to recreate the Cherubim's Rush panel... for Otakon. Semigoddess is all done, and our fallback is Semigoddess + standard PS, but does anyone have any tips for interpreting the Sepulchritude outfit? Because of the art style it's hard to tell if he has sleeves or pants in this mode, and I kind of want to believe that he's got this gladiator armor thing going on right overtop of his usual suit, similar to how his laurels are sitting right overtop of his fedora. I've seen some really nice (if slightly cartoony) wings made with materials other than feathers, like cardstock or craft foam? Does anyone have any tutorials to this effect? Favorite simple armor tutorials? I'm leaning towards a craft foam base at the moment.

Also, if we end up going the route of basic PS, what can I do to make sure he's not mistaken for Dad Egbert?

The whole convention was sorta bullshit. They had fantastic guests (The entire cast of the Walking Dead, Stan Lee, Tom Baker, William Shatner, John Barrowman, Karen Gillian, etc.) But moved events constantly and cancelled some entirely. And the space of the convention spanned two convention centers- easily twice as long as Otakon's con center.

It seemed like they were more interested in schmoozing the guests than taking care of the attendees.

That all said... We did encounter some of what we'd consider as Bad Homestucks, but they were literally children. As in, could not be older than thirteen. One case in particular came dashing up to me while I was in the Vendor's Hall, smudged with grey green zombie paint. She had horns that looked like they were made of wadded up pieces of paper- they were literally flat- wore a bunch of rainbow jewelry and had glasses on. She could not have been more than twelve. I would literally be double her age. But the big kicker is, bless her, she had "GC" written across her cheeks with eyeliner. The G was backwards because she probably did it in a mirror. It reminded me of the little Halloween costumes that they have for Disney Characters where they have the little picture in a cameo on their chest? She shrieked to me in Terezi-speak and tried to lick me. I just kind of held her shoulders gently and smiled, saying "Oh no, don't lick me, I'm poisonous!" and told her there were other Homestucks wandering about. That was enough to set her on the trail again.

There were a handful of grey-painted children running about; but this convention had the wisdom, thankfully, to designate a room called the "Anime Noise Room" that was literally designed to plop kids in to run in circles and scream as much as they want.

I feel you, we were having a meetup at another con (eurofag) and at first the meetup had been sceduled to meet a bit outside the entrance but since it was glaring hot sun everyone collected just next to the entrance. One response was that say, RDJ making his character black in Tropic Thunder was not blackface, but Billy B Van, a performer from the early... 1900s? A century behind at least, made his character go from white to black and gave exaggerated features. Think Jynx from Pokemon and her earlier designs.

This can still be somewhat HS related because some people in these threads have considered using black makeup for Exile cosplays but were worried about sketchiness.

It's not blackfacing since it's not trying to become an African character. I think using black paint for carapaces is fine (since they are literally black) just like using paint for trolls or sprites is fine.

Separately, I think blackfacing for Ancestors is just poor judgement and stupid looking. The Ancestors are just trolls that are portrayed with shadows, but they are actually trolls, ie actually have troll grey skin.

Unfortunately. I never experience it irl, the worst I've ever received was just a "Of course, I'd run into a Homestuck", which doesn't even seem that bad it was more of a jest if anything.

But I always read stories online. In specific con threads, of cons I plan on going to or have gone to, there's a general disdain for them. And if it's the bad ones then fine, yes, I understand, but I'm just out on my own, not causing trouble, just wanting to enjoy and attend the con like anybody else, so I don't want to be grouped with them. I had a group that I met up with at a con that didn't even know I was a hs cosplayer at fist because I was cosplaying jack, they kept qualifying their "fucking homestuck" remarks with "except for you", and I heard more than a few times that I was "pretty fucking chill, for being a homestuck character"[sic]
This was my first time at a con and I stayed away from the main group of HS cosplayers because there was another slick who was roleplaying who was really getting on my nerves, are HS cosplayers usually actually that bad?

Like the other anon said, it depends A LOT on your materials, but your best bet is to have the handle actually inside the head part. For example, with the Warhammer of Zillyhoo, it'd probably be best to make the yellow Z part out of styrofoam or something, then actually carve a hole to put the handle into, and glue with superglue, hot glue, etc. Woodglue is something I definitely recommend if you are using a lot of wood pieces.

It's nice in a pinch because it works on almost all material types and it's fairly inexpensive. Good for props if you cover it over with something (like papermache on top of styrofoam).

90% of the time horrible for the actual costume part of cosplay, though. Leaves a lot of glue strings, is more likely to fall apart, and you can't really wash it.

Hi, I'm the Itchy cosplayer that got posted here. I'm currently wondering how I can add a mouth pattern to the facemask.

Well, the mask on my current outfit is detachable mainly so I could put on headphones (and that's because i was an idiot to try to run an 8K in it). Since people draw Itchy with collared shirts underneath then the seam would be hidden.

I figure if I could order the masks separate somehow with eyeholes that could make sense.
