Someone please explain to me, how Otakon, the second biggest anime convention in the U.S., has such little support on cgl. I mean, anime expo had 3 active threads simultaneously at one point. All the Otakon threads (except the one about how dangerous Baltimore can be) have been moving at a very slow pace. Is this convention just not popular anymore?

Somehow I always thought the East Coast would be the drama free coast of the US. Now I am a little worried about dressing up in lolita, because it will only be my second time meeting other lolitas. I can't wait! I really freaking can't I have an early start seeing how I am carless so I'll be leaving my house at 10 am on Thursday. But checking into the Renaissance last year was great my room was ready by 12:30 and they had root beer floats for us. I don't care if I have to go outside the staff there is so nice. Seriously it's the only hotel I've stayed at for a convention where I have been treated decently.

It's worth it if you like dancing and/or the music. If you're expecting it to be anything more than a dark, crowded room with loud music, you will be disappointed. Personally, I love the rave, but I like dancing and the music is usually decent.

The last few times I've tried to get into the rave, the only ways in and out were by joining a conga line. Also, getting hit on by creepers, because I'm usually that lone girl off in lalaland flailing her arms by herself. But otherwise, pretty good music, and more enjoyable than most smaller convention raves. But also, significantly more stinky.

A lot of us aren't socially autistic either. The ones that are the most outspoken and notorious are usually the ones that hold that stereotype. A majority of people are pretty chill.

Otakon is a pretty big convention and it's a good opportunity to see what one is like. If you live close, just go and enjoy yourself. It's pretty easy to make a friend or two from random strangers. There's people I've met at Otakon years ago that I still talk to.

I personally try and dress according to the heat. I mean I wear cosplays that are not too many layers, that and try not to go outside a lot. I mean I remember last year I wore Homura JUST because I was in the hotel connected to the con, ubt when I had to travel to a friends hotel it was brutal. that and carrying around water with you is ALWAYS good, that and a little snack so if you feel like you are loosing energy eat the snack and drink the water so you dont faint.

I can take heat pretty well. I'm wearing Lolita the whole weekend so I'm planning on wearing some chiffon (blouses and also dream sky), and having a water bottle with me at all times. I'm trying to get ahold of some clip in bangs and ponytails for at least one of the days because my natural hair has never held up in that humidity and wigs can sometimes be a little much. But I usually put my wigcap on with wet fresh out of the shower hair when it's hot to help keep my head cooler.

I'm so excited for this convention that I derped and posted in the wrong thread.
I have so much work left to do on Serenity, but the last few weeks have been busy caring for my very sick kitty, then going on vacation with my family. I also have to make scrubs for crazy!Cas, and I'm considering making a crown of thorns.

I'm so excited for otakon, though. It definitely crept up on me, but I'm super pumped to see all the different cosplays. I might swing by the meet up.
And by "swing by" I mean lurk for a few minutes a few yards away before feeling too awkward and giving up and running back to my hotel room.

Outside of a dedicated meet up I can't even con with people for the most part. When I go to NYCC, I usually wander by myself and hit up panels and take a shit ton of pictures. It is easier to have people around to take pictures of you though when the opportunity arrises.

I'm female and I actually really enjoy doing things by myself at cons, especially bigger ones. I'm not antisocial (I have a lot of friends), but I'm more along the lines of introverted. I think it's fun, especially at Otakon to take my time, get to the events and panels I want to go to, browse the dealers room and artist alley for eons, take pictures, and chill and people watch.

Plus you don't have to worry about those friends that don't want to do the things you want to do, and they end up bored, or you end up bored for tagging along, or rushing you along because they want to do something else.

People line up Wednesday night to get their badge Thursday afternoon. So yes, it is very much a thing.

I recommend picking up your badge at night, maybe between 7 and 10 pm. There will be little to no line, which usually wraps around the convention center and then some in the afternoon.

Question: For balls like on the coif at the left, does anyone know of any good alternatives to using styrofoam? they work, but they're a bitch to spraypaint without accidentally getting eaten away into that bumpy texture, and they aren't very sturdy, and cutting them in half is extremely painful to my ears, just sets my teeth on edge. Any good alternatives for this silly design?

Okay guys, ive got a few questions for you if youd be so kind. I live about 4 and a half hours away from baltimore and my one friend and i have just decided last minute we want to go to otakon. Now this isnt our first time doing spur of the moment con trips, and usually what we do is drive to the con in my van with our stuff, park in a nearby decent looking parking lot, and sleep in the van instead of getting a hotel. Now ive heard some horror stories about baltimore, is sleeping in the car a good idea? (I.e. are we going to get assaulted or something at night?) and, do you know if the convention center itself has 24 hour parking? Im fine with paying for it, i just want to know if they have it.
Secondly, how much is there to do at ota if you dont have a badge? Because ive been to cons where you can do literally anything except panels without a badge, and ive been to cons where you cant even enter the convention center without one. (Mainly, can i walk around the con without a badge and not have to worry about being thrown out?)
Also, any other advice for an out of towner whos never been to an east coast con before?

All the parking in the area is in underground garages, none of them allow idling so you won't be able to use your AC and you will need that. I tried this last year and the heat was unbareable. There's one above ground structure a few blocks up and over that's cheaper and didn't care that I was Idling. Bit of a walk but not yet in the really shitty part of Baltimore. The inner harbor is the only non shitty part of Baltimore so don't park outside of that. You will need a badge to get into the convention center at all.

With this con it is one I would highly suggest getting a badge for. You cannot get into the convention without a badge, they have con security at every entrance checking for badges. You cant even enjoy the con if you dont have on in my opinion.
And the sleeping in the van, I wouldnt advise it because of the heat. you will just be left feeling sticky and gross all weekend, and you may not smell too nice. I would see if any of your friends or someone you know is going to the con, and see if they have two spots in the hotel room. the badge will run you about 80 at the door. I hope everything can work out!

2nd-timer here. I'm trying to pull together a genderbent Daisy Fitzroy cosplay. A few years ago, I was stopped inside the lobby fountian area because I didn't have my badge. It was actually lost. I was escorted out and to registration and had to get it taken care of there or I had to leave. Yeah I think Otakon's rule is one replacement badge per person (Hell, it used to be like 3). So, technically you CAN say you lost your badge and need a new one so you can get two but I'm not sure if this is still the case so it's better to just buy two badges.
Most cons will give you a replacement badge. The only one that I've ever fucking seen that wouldn't was A&G Ohio where I was a fucking panelist and they made me buy another badge to do my own panels.

Also a cosplayer but I'm super tiny so I wear my badge around my waist; I literally just step into my badge. Obviously not possible for everyone but if you're small enough I recommend it (given that your costume is a two-piece sort of thing) you can just throw the badge in the back or angle yourself to the side.

I live about the same distance away and even before I would actually buy a badge I would always sneak in for at least one day. You wont be able to go into any panels or cool rooms but you can walk around the BCC and take pictures. I've mostly reduced myself to only allowing myself to panic when I'm not holding needles or spray paint and subsisting on roy rogers because LOL work doesn't let me get much better food. Kinda bummed because I was gonna make a trident for Feferi but there's no, no way I could at this point.
I probably can't make it to the pool party, I've got a lot of things that probably need finishing touches then. Will definitely be at the Matsuri though, for Adam Warrock.

Japanese slippers are great and a couple of those others are ok, but man, what a list based purely on appearances. I just like how they go "red wine" for Eridan. What red wine? I don't fucking know! Ornerymint's are ok but a lot of them just aren't to my personal taste. A couple other sites I can think of for nerdy cocktails are thedrunkenmoogle, which has a bit more variety in the sorts of drinks it does, and tumblr user hardactofollow has this whole Pacific Rim series, some of which are good.

I tend to bring a some bottles of my favorite ales which I share with whoever happens to run into me and wants to try some stuff they've never heard of. I found a few bottles of some Wild Blue and Wild Black lager and I'll probably get some more pearry. Sadly I lost my flask somewhere so I can't have convenient to-just-drink-for-the-alcohol.

Drunken Moogle I have a binder for that has all the cocktails (except some of the newest ones) printed out nice a neat. Love that site. There's also AlchoLOL if you like League of Losers.

Tavros: Kahlua, Godiva liqueur, Milk, Nutmeg
Kanaya was just a Japanese slipper and I didn't get around to doing Eridan or Fef.

To be fair though I will probably just get enough Beefeater to make a bunch of Tom Collins and enough Seagrams Seven to drink 7n7s all weekend.

Also for Otakon why not just make your own like convention themed drinks/shots like idk "the Sweaty Hambeast", or "Only Here to Rave" no idea what would be in either one other then regrett. I'm in the renaissance so I may bring my shaker and the stuff to make cherry lemonade thing... Idk what the right name is for it but Cherry Vodka + Cherry Grenadene + lemonade shake that shit and top it off with cherry soda... It's banging.

Maryland tax is terrible next to Virginia, and like half the counties are trying to restrict sale even more. Pretty much all booze in a couple counties is only through the county stores which is absurd. Corridor in Ellicott city has great selections, though. We get Shock Top from there which is probably the best hard cider I've ever had.

I agree. After 20 years, I'm sure most people in the area kind of know what's coming. Some people might ask what's going on, and some people stare and point and honk horns, but I think most people are curious.
The only particularly negative experience I've had with locals/non-connies at Otakon was some crazy old lady screaming "self preserved bitch" at me as I walked by.
