Deciding between Togami and just saying fuck it and wearing lolita.

Looking forward to seeing how out locals treat congoers. It's a very different climate here than it is in Toronto. The HCC is kind of crap, too. I hope CB can make it work.

That's good news. I just hope CB's attendance is good this year, because GO Transit's access to Hamilton is pretty damn limited. The trains only run during rush hours, if I'm recalling it right.

I'm assuming most people aren't going to stay at the absolutely awful Sheraton in Jackson and are going back and forth daily for Toronto instead.

Or maybe Hamilton will be smart and beef up police presence for the weekend. It wouldn't be the first time they did that for something at the HCC.

Hamilton is safe. Low income =/= dangerous. I'd say it's not exactly the most well-to-do, picturesque city, but I've never felt unsafe there. Even in the steel mills district.

Hey guys, an awful homestuck checking in to say i'm attending all three days. sorry for existing.

My parents live in Hamilton and I'm having a bit of a laugh over people being worriead about the area. You're fine, I've never had an issue. you're going to get the same cat calls if you're wearing a skimpy costume as you would in Toronto, just a lot more people staring since its the first con to take place in Hamilton.

transit wise, its really easy to get to from the Go train. Lakeshore West stops at Aldershot when its not rush hour, but that's fine because there's a go bus that connects to Hamilton Go Centre at that station. that bus conveniently goes RIGHT PAST THE CONVENTION CENTER. hop off at the 'City Hall' stop, which will usually be announced.

(( omfg why does it think this is spam?? ugh. fine you get the long google link, sorry. ))

https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=aldershot+go+station&daddr=hamilton+convention+center&hl=en&sll=43.284859,-79.878034&sspn=0.062481,0.169086&geocode=FTXhlAIdR3Q9-ylLGe-msJ0siDEUBMtGcN-pnQ%3BFZgMlAIdWEQ9-yE-rC-KrG3ZfilNn0wMg5ssiDE-rC-KrG3Zfg&dirflg=r&ttype=now&noexp=0&noal=0&sort=def&mra=ltm&t=m&start=0&z=13

Bravo only has directions from the Go Centre, and doesn't mention the bus at all, so, I figured I'd just sorta leave that here for anyone who needed it.

Addressing some of the stuff being tossed around about Hamilton and GO transit:

1. Hamilton, like other cities, have their sketchy parts and their safe parts. The part where the con is being held at is okay. You'll know if you've wondered off too far because you'll start seeing every building having barred windows and that's probably a sign you should turn back.

2. Sometimes the GO train takes longer than the GO bus even while encountering traffic jam somewhere along that route. I've taken it about half a dozen times so that's all I can say.

3. The walk to and from the bus station is only about 20 minutes so really, not far.

Gonna be there doing artist alley, should be interesting since it's my first year with this con.

Well, it's Sunday night.

I'm heading home now and everyone's packing up and closing. Got myself a cheap 3DS game for half of the usual price, $20.00 as opposed to $40.00, and another 3DS game for just $30.00 so both should tide me over for a while, bought two posters, met Brentalfloss, had a picture with him and got him to sign something and unfortunately since I got there a bit late today I just barely missed Doug Walker. But, he was on his way out and actually came up to Brentalfloss while he was still chatting with me and I took a picture of Doug, unfortunately I couldn't take one with him, but I got to see him in person and that's all that counts.

All in all I liked this con. I enjoyed it.

Artist Alley was okay, good amount of tables that had varied content (like cross-stitched art and wallets) and the dealers area wasn't too bad either. Went in the arcade once just to look around and it was nice that they had a little indie area for people to showcase some unknown games.

Didn't really attend any panels or events aside from the rave on Saturday (edit: sweaty highschool dance) and Project Cosplay today which was fantastic. Ran into Brentalfloss several times just walking around the corridors and had a banter with him about the rave just after we came out from it, was great fun.

Friday was chaotic. The whole schedule print-out mix up made getting to the panel my group was in rather frustrating. one schedule said C, another said we were in A. by the time we talked to the right people, panel check in had closed, and we had to hurry off to the panel without it.

Loved the new location. Though, i found the convention centre to be a little too warm, even with the AC on full blast. Lots of nice shoot locations. I got loads of pictures that none of you will want to see because homestucks (sorry about the stairs, we tried to keep them tucked in a corner best we could on saturday and sunday). I spoke to a few friends in AA and they said they likely weren't going to make their hotel costs back, and the most common money maker was commissions. Bravo never has been a good con for selling prints, at least in my experience.

Overall, for the price, the con was a great 3 day hang out. panels went reasonably well, even the ones i seen ran by younger cosplayers. Dance was kind of disappointing, and i was sad the con didn't run later into the night. Wish i spent more time in the games room :/

Were you staff? You just told them to stop and let them keep the horn, even after he did it again?

Bad Fanfic panel on Friday night was hilarious, and informative. I had no idea that Yamaha motorcycles were super-gay.

Pete Williams and the Undergrads marathon were fun. It had been way too long since I'd watched that show. I forgot just how funny Cal is.

Bums. Bums Everywhere outside the convention centre. Was the con chair's note in the program guide about Hamilton being on the rise a joke?

Didn't buy anything from dealers or artists' alley. The "All Good Things" Enterprise model was tempting, but it's at least $20 cheaper online.

Did anyone get pictures of the Pokemon drawings from Mario Party? Janitor Jigglypuff was the best.

The arcade games were nice (I had low expectations after the warning last year that they had to obey that stupid law that killed the pinball cafe) but most weren't A-list games and it was shitty how they unplugged one game on Sunday after it'd been sold. Would they have gone King Madagascar and shut down everything if someone had bought all the games on Friday?

Die Hard Arcade's graphics have aged terribly, but shooting a naked dude with an anti-tank rifle is still great fun.

Also random girl if you're reading this, thanks, your face is pretty good too :X

Few of the buildings in that area are what I'd call abandoned, and I only saw one beggar a fair distance from the con.

Photoshoots are not in the security department's priority list, they have more important things to worry about.

I hate FanEx for that reason, but come on, they only did that once.

Homestucks completely blocking a staircase should be a priority for security.

Fan Expo pulled the same crap last year (and possibly 2011?), it just wasn't as obvious as 2010 when they only had the tiny north building and were hugely over capacity. And their tech setup for the Star Trek cast event in March was so awful that I could barely see the guests (no close-up shot on a video screen) and only hear half of them (they had to pass around the few microphones that worked).

Congrats; I'm relived that it wasn't a shit show for everyone in AA/dealers. I can't say for anyone else but I can say that I at least said a hi or asked them how the con was going for them if they were checking out my table.

For a full table, one person, $75.

Gosh that homestruck horn almost gave me a headache. I couldn't even see the person but I heard it loud and clear from afar. Don't know if cons could be making rules for noise but it's really annoying, urgh.

you were probably not in the dark corner lol

I think you mean $70 for a full table. That's a $35 pass included, mind you. The breakdown is actually pretty cheap. $35 badge plus $35 table, effectively. It would need to be more if you wanted two badges.

Between this and their incredibly honest response to Artist Alley issues, they've won over my attendance for next year already.

what happened?

Venue had broken lighting in one section that left some AA tables in the dark. Also the layout was a bit too tight and dead-ended in places so traffic was shitty in some areas. They've been very vocal in acknowledging the issues and getting on the ball to fix them.

Shit like the lighting was beyond their control (the venue should have fixed it), but the layout is something they did try to adjust on Saturday with some success. New venue so bound to be problems, so I'm hoping they did their homework on what sucked about the flow.

I am so happy to see that!

There were also a few things reported that wasn't dealt with in AA (could be just a bunch of warnings but things stayed the same by Sunday afternoon). One being someone in AA selling pocket watches that should have been a dealer and another guy with nipple protruding art that probably should of been behind the table.

Flip side, on being incredibly honest, apparently there was a personal post about a particular artist being a d-bag, go this refund due to being in a dark corner all weekend. This has been since taken down before I could catch any more of it but did anyone see what happened to it? Atlas I had to go to work so I missed most of it.

From what I understand, the artist was one of the ones stuck in "the dark corner", got really upset about the lighting and layout issues, incorrectly blamed the con for things that were the venue's responsibility (ie: the lights), asked for a refund, got it, and continued to bad-mouth on his blog and twitter until some other attendees and artists truth-bombed him. That's just what I gathered from Facebook posts?

The 'sold' arcade machine was unplugged because the monitor wasn't working come early Sunday. AA layout too tight this year, which is a pity because there was some nice stuff in there. Hopefully this year's experience in the new venue will help work out layout kinks for 2014.

There was one aisle that was ridiculously small and could barely fit two people, which also wasn't good if you had a big prop (which I did, I kind of bumped into some people / things, but thankfully nothing got knocked over)

They apparently did get caught and thrown out. Of course now it'll be hard for V cosplayers, thanks to these assholes.
