Alright TX people, there's a month left until the con. Are you done with your cosplays? Have you looked at the beta schedule yet? Anything you're looking forward to?

I'm not done with my cosplays--I have the wig, contact, and paint for Scanty, but I'm waiting till this weekend to go fabric shopping with my Kneesocks. I only have until August 2 to get it done though, because I'm taking Scanty to Otakon then to San Japan basically right after that. Asuka and Kyoko are done, though.
I never go to panels, since I'm mostly there for the cosplay and friends. Still excited though! My friend is flying in from Reno to stay with me for the con.

The new location is odd because it's divided, the hotel is next to the convo center so it's like 10 ft between the two, so no outdoor walking but it breaks up the "action" so to speak. There's not really a nice central space to sit and people watch which was so nice at the Marriott.
Average food vendor in the open artist alley area, stupidly priced convenience store type food in the hotel. You can still walk across the street to the Denny's or Rivercenter mall's foodcourt for more options.

Is this the kind of convention where you can't even enter the con site and walk around in the lobby in cosplay without a badge? I kind of want to check it out for the crowd rather than any of the programming, but I don't want to have to pay just to mill around and chat for a bit.

>> No.6986293

You'll be able to walk around the lower level of the hotel and the outer walkway areas of the convention center, but you will not be able to get into the huge open room where the food vendor, artist alley, various events, and dealers hall is. The newest schedule isn't up yet, but I've actually changed it from the Pokemon Movie to Queen of the Damned. I got behind on doing the Pokemon script and, honestly, QotD is a hell of a lot more fun to make fun of, especially for an 18+ night crowd.

Most likely I'm doing it live. I'm finishing up the proper downloadable mp3 file version this week, but so long as I have a little nerve and alcohol in me, I plan to do it live at San Japan.

From what I know of those participating and having looked over the rules myself (because I was thinking of competing), you're going to see alot of people who are regular competitors, yes. I expect we'll even get people from out of state coming here simply to qualify because we'll be the closest qualifier con for them.

But I was also noticing from the rules, that you are required to have 3 copies of your costume (which makes sense from their point of view) so you're going to see mostly sewn stuff that is of good quality but will not be over the top, impressive like you might see from people who only have to make one version of their costume. So likely, no huge suits, or armoured stuff or things that are super intensive to make, just because making three copies of something like that would kill most people. I'm beginning to think that that is why most of the finalists you see for WCS every year really aren't that impressive, even though their costume may have remarkable craftsmanship.

But those are just my thoughts, I know a few people entering, but I'd bet we really only see maybe 30 entries, tops, if that.

Because if you win, you get an all expenses paid trip to the next level of competition. If they pay all that money and you get to the next con where you're going to compete and then slip and fall and tear your outfit or something, you can't compete and they're out all that money it costs to ship you there.
Keep in mind if you win the US rounds you get to go to Japan free for the finals which are televised, so that starts to be big bucks involved and they don't want to pay all that to have a minor problem ruin everything.

>> No.7005679

>>7005656
Ahahaha oh my god where did you even get this idea? I was seriously looking at competing myself (and just looked over the rules again, just in case there was mention of three of anything- uh, nope) and of course there isn't any such rule.

Ah, good to hear something positive. I never get to go because it usually conflicts with the VA panels. Does he give out actual prizes? I'd go back to running those sorts of panels, but the costs are just too much.

Though I did hear that the Murder Mystery event needs new operators, saw the makeup panel isn't in this year, so those ideas are up for grabs again.

And the few anime-related panels my friends went to were about as bad as the non-anime panels

The panel choices can be blamed on the guy in charge of programming. He's scared off a lot of decent panelists so you get who ever is left.

You're going to see a lot of Western panels because Dave and event coordinator are trying to bring in the most people. What is Tumblr obsessed with right now? Well those are panels you're going to see.

There was once a time when Dave didn't want the con to be saturated with Western things. But if you talk to him, even he admits that a lot of cons are going in the multi-genre direction.

If you want to go to a purist con then go to Ushicon but then peeps shit on that for being small and not having variety.

Just about all TX cons are going to have western panels. Afest this year finally gave in approving some mlp stuff. AM brought in american cartoon voice actors then even charged for autographs. Just the nature of the beast.

>> No.7019787

>>7019763
But it's not like it's a Texas phenomenon. Anime Expo has begun to have MLP panels, steampunk panels, even had a freaking TMNT panel this year; AWA and Acen have Homestuck panels, it's not an isolated occurance.

>> No.7019906

>>7019750
Exactly this. If you don't like the panels, offer to host some. And yes the presenter is pretty important. Some panels may sound good but the presenter isn't prepared and scared of their own voice. Then you may find a panel that sounds stupid but the presenter could be amazing.

They are pretty receptive to panel ideas at SJ, but if you don't offer, the crazy shits will get to do their panels just like usual because there are A LOT of hours to fill.

>> No.7019979

>>7019906
Agreed, though I understand what >>7019741 is trying to get at. I can't and don't expect everyone who doesn't like the panels to host one themselves, but at the very least have an idea of what they'd RATHER see. Just go over and look up panels from OTHER cons and suggest those things. You never know, the right host may just be stumped as to what to run and needs to hear someone say "I'd much rather see -insert panel name here from a different con- if only someone would be willing to host it."

Okay, before we get too far into this discussion, lemme clarify that I'm not the "DJ" you're mad at. I'm just curious as to why it matters that he's asking on the thread relevant to the event he's going to be at, asking potential people who will be dancing to his music.

>>7020384
For one thing, /cg/ is a minority of the con goers, and a even big minority of people who will going to be at the dance. Getting opinions on here is just stupid.

Secondly, a real DJ does not go around asking the people that are going what he should play. That shows a lack of professionalism and worst of all, a complete lack of material and understanding on how to put on a show.

I just get a little bit miffed because real DJ's are extremely talented musicians and composers, usually being able to play two or more instruments outside of their production equipment, who put a lot of time into their craft, but then you have someone like 丂c尺ノ乃乃レ乇丂 come along and thinks just putting some tracks on their Windows Media player or whatever and hitting shuffle makes them a DJ. Fact is, he should already have numerous sets or an idea of what set he wants to create without having to ask on a message board, whether or not people want "J-Core" or "Happy Hardcore". In fact, just catering to one genre in a set is criminal in of itself.

Now you all may be thinking I'm going a bit over board with this, but for me it's like someone setting up a booth in the Artist Alley, when he's never drawn a single thing in his life, and just traces whatever anyone ask him to trace and announces that he's an artist.

I find that the dance is a big part of the Anime Convention, so obviously I want it to be the best that it can be.

>> No.7020442

>>7020413
Now why couldn't your first post be nice and reasonable like this, instead coming in, shit-guns ablazing? Ignoring that, I think both the "genre" titles that our DJ friend mentioned sound moronic and that's the reason I haven't attended a rave in years. It all sounds like the same stuff to me, whether it's thisthisthatcore or happywhateverblah or technoraveorgasmpocalypseblahblahblah.

What if he's already got a couple sets in mind, but just wants a few second opinions? Regardless of what percentage of con-goers may be here, we ARE still con-goers. It's kind of like an artist having a large set of prints, but wants to know which ones will be better received in the AA.

I'm really just playing devil's advocate to keep the thread active.

But I actually do produce ALL of the music in my hard dance sets.

However I was asked to play Trance by the staff member incharge of the dance because most of the other DJs are playing Hard Dance (and people can't dance to 240bpm fillintheblank-core)
So for San Japan I will be a glorified iPod Shuffle. I hope you all like trance.
