I had some really terrible experiences at past Otakons regarding safety. Two years ago, my group was escorting some of my other friends to their hotel which was kinda far from the convention center. While we were passing by, a large group of melanin-enriched gentleman were eying us. Luckily, a cop car passed by and they said, "shit it's the cops" and got the fuck out of there. Last year, I had to bring in a person in my group to the emergency room on pre-reg night because he was a fucking dumbass and ran around the streets of Baltimore without any fucking shoes on and stepped on some broken glass. By the time we got out it was four in the fucking morning and we had to walk around downtown baltimore for half an hour before finding a cab. On Saturday, I was walking alone to the rave and was almost attacked by a group of drunk Slavs. I had to pull out my knife before they backed off.

So this year I am going to bring 10 people to Otakon and was thinking about holding a con safety seminar a few days before we leave. I want to go over general con stuff like how to avoid creepers and crazy people and knowing where you group members are. However, most of the group is comprised of con veterans so I'm going to mainly cover outside the con safety. I want to emphasize sticking to groups and developing situational awareness using Jeff Cooper's color-coded Combat Mindset. We'll go to bars, but there will be designated sober persons who will look out for any danger or people trying to drop roofies. No strangers will be permitted in the room. No drugs will be allowed in the room. We will not go near any melanin-enriched gentlemen or slavs.

We will be armed. I personally will carry Fox 5.3 mean green OC spray, a kubotan, and a folding knife. I will suggest to people who are comfortable using weapons to bring them as well. I'm also thinking about making Millwall bricks that people can carry with them.

Sounds pretty good! Two years ago while I was relaxing in the hallway with the slanted walls, a man came up to me (out of the 100s of other strangers sitting there as well) and started talking to me inches away from my face. He didn't go away until someone called him. (he was dressed as Indiana Jones if anyone recognizes him from Otakon 2011) It was really weird. Now I'm taking self-defense classes, haha.

Since you're going to draw in a variety of people, maybe it would be helpful going over some scenarios and good reactions to those situations according to different "threat levels" for lack of a better word. I dunno, it's a tough thing to teach, but someone simply looking at you and giving you a weird or bad look doesn't mean you're in danger necessarily BUT judging by the shit we know gets posted on tumblr, these people might not know what the thresholds/limits/etc. are.

Tips against robbers, burglars, street thugs:
-If you have a second wallet, fill it with coins, expired cards and a few bills to make it both realistic - and heavy. Throw it beyond the person. They are more interested in the money than your life and the short time you earn by grabbing their attention, having them turn over, and if you're really lucky, have them run after it - can save your life.
It might also be smart to keep an old cellphone to trick them, and if carrying a bag throw it at them. They're more interested in searching the bag for goods than running after you. Once they find out there are no valuables in the bag they'll probably throw it nearby and you can search the area for it after they're gone(and you've called the police).

-Find out what safe defense weapons you're allowed to carry by law. While aiming fingers for the eyes or the throat is very effective at disabling opponents, it might be best to just repel them with spray. Don't risk close combat because you don't know whether a thug carries a weapon or not. Shockers as far as I've seen are not an effective measure, at least not as tasers, but tasers aren't legal in most countries, and they aren't widely available as self defense weapons even in the US, so your luck is with spray.

-Since women can't get muscles and bulk strength as easily with strength, it might be best to look for martial arts lessons, but I personally suggest learning more about disarming than attacking an opponent. An opponent with a handgun is game over if they manage to get a chest shot, and the same goes for people who have a knife, if they manage to get in range. If they manage to maim you by cut on your leg you can say goodbye to your belongings and your blood supply. If you take care of their weapon, it makes running away much easier.

(As for the integrity of the information, it's made up of information friends in unsafe cities gave me, tips I picked up in newspapers years ago, and things I learned while trying to pick a kind of martial art. I hope they're better than what you can come up with under heavy stress and panic, unless you're so amazing at improvising that you can get away without safety measures.)


I've only been to local conventions that last 10 hours and don't have your usual hotel drug-alcohol-sex stories, as well as long distance from con to hotel to hometown so I'm limited to the things that happen within the con grounds and buildings.

I'd recommend staying near staff members or guards(if there are any, we have them) at all times. Avoid crowded areas to prevent potential thieves from pickpocketing you while you can't notice them, as well as empty areas. Your solitude in a quiet corner is a thug's chance to get quick cash. Put a lock on your bag. I prefer codes to keys as codes are more convenient and are still hard to crack, and buy you enough time to search for the one who stole it. Here the staff hosts an area in which carefully picked volunteers guard the bags of cosplayers. If you're cosplaying I'm sure you wouldn't like to put your bag next to you when you're posing for a shot because that portion of a second is enough for somebody to pick your bag and run away while blending into the crowd.

If I was unsure about the value of equipment I wouldn't spend as much time carrying it - though I know that camera equipment goes for hundreds of dollars, if not thousands, for TV crews.

I've been to Otakon 8 years and have never had a problem either. Being 5'5" and Asian doesn't really make me much of a "threat" and I've walked around by myself quite a distance and still was fine (roommates were assholes and didn't want to use the buddy system so I walked from the con to the Mt. Vernon Hotel at 1am). Basic city smarts man, that's all it really takes. All I've ever dealt with were panhandlers and drunken sports fans, not so bad in the grand scheme of things.

Inner Harbor especially always has a ton of cops around, I noticed so as long as people don't stray super far from the area, I don't think there's much need for concern.

ok, so to make this thread even vaguely cosplay relevant i'll try to post some of my own advice not this /k/ommando nonsense.

i lived in a ghetto for five years and learned more than i ever wanted to about just how ugly america is. i've been robbed twice at gunpoint, been stabbed trying to stop my ex from having her purse stolen and watched or heard about countless other horrible things. so this advice for cosplayers.

1) get totally comfortable with the notion that you're going to attract a lot of mixed attention. the further you get from a con, the weirder the looks. you're dressed up and that will attract attention. if you act like the attention makes you uncomfortable, then the attention may try to get things out of you. i had a friend who would always give a twenty to any bum who asked him for money out of guilt and anxiety. for some reason, the bums would always ask him for money when we walked in a crowd. this shit shows.

2) blacks aren't the enemy, druggies and drunks are, regardless of color. they are unpredictable, irrational and want whatever they want right as soon as they want it. i once had a crackhead take a swing at me with a shovel just because. if you are dressed like a fairy princess, this is gonna happen even more, as they will initially be amused and attracted to you then randomly become irrational and angry. also, they're far less afraid of a crowd than you'd hope, so the buddy system or walking in a group will only get you so far.

3) don't travel at night. if you have to, use a cab. if you can't afford that, stay on the main roads and well lit areas. i know this is inconvenient, but do what you can while still having fun.

4) don't get drunk or high. i know, huge downer. all my friends who had seriously bad experiences with muggers, hoodlums or other drunks/tweakers, they were all drunk or high at the time. impaired judgement does not make you better at dealing with strangers, even though you often think it does.

7) this is the ugly one but it's also true. poor people don't like you because you're down to earth. minorities don't like you because you're liberal. don't EVER try to placate someone by emulating them, speaking their language, etc. this is just patronizing and ignorant. also, they're irrational, uneducated and probably drunk. a gang of black ghetto residents came out of the projects one night and beat a bunch of drunks half to death just because fuck whitey. these people may not have wonderful lives and some of them are very angry about it. if a dude has a bat, he's probably gonna use it. turn 360 degrees and walk away.

and finally, most people get really nervous before a con or before going to unfamiliar territory (like baltimore), it's nice to try and prepare yourself for the worst but really you should prepare yourself for the best. because whatever you're prepared for is far more likely to happen!

I believe about 10 to 15% percent of the population were non Japanese, mostly Hispanic. A few weeks after arriving in Japan, I was trying to find this place. I looked everywhere for it, but decided to check one more street before going home, because it was getting dark. This car stops and a man says something to me. At first, I thought he was asking if I needed to go somewhere and I replied that I was okay. He then tried to get me into his car. I told him no thank you and started to walk away. Now, this street was very small. The man parked his car and headed towards me. He started asking me a lot of questions about who I was and how he was interested in black girls. Long story short, he forced me against a wall and started groping me. I didn't know what to do, because I was new to the country and if I screamed I didn't know who side of the story the police would accept. I eventually was able to push him away and escape to a more open area. The man is Japanese. I am black. So much for the minorities causing the crimes right? I foolishly thought, because I was black, I would not be the target for that sort of thing.

On a much lighter note. I have been to Otakon for 10 years. Nothing has happened me so far. Can't wait for this year!

I've been to Otakon five times, it's not too bad if you use your fucking brains. That said, if you wanna give yourself more assurances that you'll be safe...

Wanna pretty much assure yourself some relative safety? Stay at the Hilton, Hyatt or Sheraton, as they have skywalk connections to the Convention Center. Secondarily, the Days Inn is pretty much right across the street, the Marriot Inner Harbor is across the street from the Hilton and the Renaissance Baltimore Harborplace Hotel is a block and a half east along Pratt St.

Yes, the Hyatt, Hilton and Sheraton are fairly expensive, but with multiples in a room, PAID IN ADVANCE, it's affordable and much safer than walking along the streets.

If you don't wanna order expensive ass room service at hotels that offer it, during the day you can eat at the Harborplace Mall, which is a walk along the skywalk to the east of the Convention Center. If you're up later and want food, get in your car and drive somewhere out of the area to eat. Look up information on the internet for 'safe places' to eat in Baltimore.
