Personally, I'd put Taylor on blast for being a terrible manager and a liar to his face, but I've got actual work I'm doing this weekend.

I'm sure someone else will show up though. With all the staff/volunteer accounts of what happened, I'm sure some anon or anons will show up.

Con gripe is an excuse. No one gets to say anything criticizing since the goons shut people up.

Staffer here. The bage checking thing came up because of a lady who was hosting a panel. I don't plan to be management.

Finally! a direct attack, I can take that off my bucket list.

I'm not happy about Conji either but anytime someone quits because changes or lack of changes they're eventually forgotten. Can't change the system without contact with the system.

No plans to be management during 2014 for SPJA events though. I need a break. I became a div head in January so I had 4 months to do my job. After people were fired / quit I stepped up into the gap. That was fucking painful lol.

>> No.6954249

The badges this year are a joke. They do have a security strip on the side but it only there to prevent photo copying. But sadly if you have some skill with a camera you can photograph it and it will look real. Who ever decided that a piece of paper would be super secure should not be creating badges.

The bag check today is a joke as well. There is many places that are not guarded at all thus defeating the check. I am not sure if they are calling it security or just a pain in the ass.

Premiere's best strength is that it lets you skip lines. The free ticket is a bonus. At $100 it was no brainer. $175 and you have to think about it, or maybe not, considering all the goddamn lines this year. You're basically paying $100 extra for the perk (figuring $45 for the cheapest 4-day, $30 for a main event ticket, leaving the rest as extra). For some people this is well worth the price especially if you want to go to multiple panels. If you don't do panels, it's not worth it. If you want autographs it might be worth it as you get to go in early on Day 1 and on the other days not too much earlier but early enough that you can zoom on over to the autograph area.

You can bet if SDCC had a premier badge that let you skip lines for $400 or some shit people would buy it. Hall H? Ballroom 20? Fuck those lines.

Panel lines and autograph lines were managed pretty poorly, and a decent amount of staff could rarely answer my questions, there was always a "maybe" or "I think" somewhere in the sentence. One of the translators at a guest panel also butchered my question, which I figured after receiving a random response from her that had nothing to do with what I asked. She seemed to stumble with other questions too and projected poorly.

I honestly think the best part of the trip was the JW, great hotel and a good price with the convention deal. I may be skipping out on AX for Otakon next year, I think it may be time to try something else big for summer, AX just isn't what it used to be as far as I'm concerned.

Thought I post this before good ol' face book deletes a thread

Joe - my friend, the Manager of cosplay events at AX, was fired in front of his staff by Allison McKnight, Director of Entertainment, and escorted out of the con by security in front of fellow staff and attendees alike. The reason being is that they could not agree on how masquerade and cosplay should be run. Regardless of the reason, there is no excuse for that show of force and embarrassment. This is how AX is now run. I'm saddened and horrified this has happened but from what I'm starting to hear, this is only the beginning. Needless to stay, Tony's staff quit in protest, which shows their character. I thought I would never say this, but AX has gotten even worse since Lattanzio left, which says a lot. I know this will get deleted soon but I thought people should know.

Brent - this is sad.... well who ever this "Allison McKnight" is she's now on the the AX Fans SHIT LIST!! Hey Joe you should repost this on the message boards/ or there other Facebook AX related threads.... this is totally unfair, and yes it seems that ax has been "unprepared" on certain panels\activities\events, and seem to make it up as they go.... they have a whole year to plan this stuff out.....

Daniel - Arent most of the ax people volunteers? How do you fire a volunteer?

Joseph - They give out more prizes after the manager is fired? Sounds like a manager was messing up.

Chris- I DONT KNOW THE WHOLE STORY BUT THAT PERSON OBVIOUSLY WRONGED THE OTHER PERSON SO IM GOING TO GRAB MY TORCH AND PITCHFORK!! Seriously? This isnt the place for that kind of con drama bull shit.

Mind you we were under the impression that they didn't and had been for some time. It was like that last year when we played the lounge.

We call the guy organizing it and get told it was because someone higher than him made the call.

We got our members comped anyway by sheer persistence. They had to bring out like 3 different people to authorize it. Overall, we won't be doing anything for them in the future and honestly I'm thinking about not attending the con next year, which is sad cause i've been going for years.

Also, staffing is just really fucking draining. Being on weapons policy is suffering. Okay maybe not but dealing with really bitchy cosplayers all day for four days really gets to you. You do get to hear some pretty funny stuff though.

The room i was in there was no extra blankets or rollaway beds. This other guy and myself had to sleep without blankets on the floor the whole weekend. And to make things worse the fat fuck in my room would turn on the air conditioning while he had a blanket and a bed. I had to sleep next to the AC since the room was hella small and there was no other place to lay down. Tried to ask for rollaway beds and extra blankets but they ran out. There was also this one guy in my room who kept farting casually. He would fart 10 times in a row like it was no big deal. The ones that are directed to the AX staffers are really really fucking stupid. I mean being told to move out of the way is rude? Being told that you can't sit somewhere is rude? Being told to stand on the tape is rude? People are really fucking stupid. It honestly pisses me off that we staffers do this for them without fucking pay and then we get shitted on for the stupidest of reasons. AEG does not own the LACC. They were given permission by the city of LA to "run" (aka. "manage") the LACC and all it's events. LA will still be given PLENTY of funds from organizations that rent out the LACC, and AEG will get the advantage of filling the hotels they also "run" (the JW Marriott and Ritz Carlton) from within the event itself.

tl;dr, LA saves itself managing costs of the expo by letting AEG run it, and AEG gets to fill its hotels more quickly by "merging" them with the expo itself.

It's an evil symbiotic relationship that fucks over any con from now on because prices for attendees are going to go up, while LACC managing costs go down. More profit for LA and AEG.

Too bad that's pretty much the majority of why I go to cons. Even if you don't have a question to ask, most people come prepared with good ones. Though be mindful of crappy translators(as someone mentioned in an earlier thread).

>Aren't worth your time

I strongly disagree, seiyu panels are extremely entertaining, especially when they snag someone who has done a ton of work(like Yui Horie and Eri Kitamura from previous years). Kazuhiko Inoue's panel this year was wonderful, guy is pretty darn talented.Directors and Character Designers can be a lot of fun as well.

Thing with the dealer's hall is, most of the stuff you can find online for a lot cheaper, the only thing I save up for is doujin(which is sadly super expensive once it's out of Japan), so going to GOH panels and getting autographs is the main draw for me. Minus all the dub actors and the like, no offense, but you can find them at cons all over the place pretty regularly.

yes, fuck that Noizi Ito translator. I want to say she fucked up the May'n panel in 2010. I don't remember exactly who that one was but they sucked too.

What I really meant about not worth the time is the line. Like for the huke panel. I love the guy, love his art, waited in line for his panel, and then I got inside and wondered why the fuck I was actually in there because it was Q&A only. I did enjoy seeing him draw but I mean, it wasn't Icandiehappynow. Line was long as hell and only the fact that they put it in Petree (and it was outside and cool at the time) made it at all bearable. Stuff like the Miku panel in Petree in 2011 and at a time of day when it was hot as fuck was much more aggravating. Or if it had been in the other panel rooms where your chances of getting in are much smaller.

Everything wrong with anime cons summed up in one person.

Cons hire on countless faggots just like this, thinking they're getting hard-working, earnest volunteers who want to help make the show a big success, because they understand that a colossal event like an anime con needs every hand it can get.

Instead, the promise of a free room, free badge, and a position of authority just important enough to trigger an instance of the Stanford Prison Experiment does nothing but attract morons who think they are either master trolls or alpha weeaboos..

We know we're not allowed to show how frustrated we are at cosplayers. Though we do discuss about the really rude ones. I can at least vouch for the tables I was in charge of, we all tried to be as nice as possible and not fanboy/girl over the cool looking props. Even then, only about 30ish people got in my face about how pissed off they are that they can't bring their LIVE FUCKING STEEL SWORD (ie: an actual fucking katana) to an anime convention. Most of the cosplayers were really understanding of the policy and some were cooperative. All of us on Weapons Policy know how dumb the rules are (Gutted Airsofts/Nerfs should be allowed imo) but we have no control over what decides to get banned/approved. All we do is try to enforce the policy.

Also. If iDOLM@STER guys are here I tried vouching for you guys. Our manager (the little asian in the red vest) didn't know it was a pretty big media franchise over in Japan, she was pretty embarrassed. >If you don't like having a strong corperate tie then go to one of the MANY fan cons that CA has.

Well see, in the better days of AX, it had corporate ties left and right, but the convention was still run in a way that made the fans and those running the convention on the same page, as it were.

Corporate stuff was ALWAYS at AX. But the convention was still run like a for-fan convention. That changed mid 2000's, and the divide between the corporate end and the fanbase became a huge gulf.

Now the convention feels largely soulless, bloated, and lacking in it's original focus. There's a lot of smaller issues at play, but it all boils down to this: The Anime Expo I grew up with is gone, and dead. I slowly watched it go from the biggest and arguably best anime convention in the west....to probably the worst run, the worst reputable, and least enjoyable convention I've gone to in the past few years.

I'm not gonna try to "change" Anime Expo now. I think it's beyond saving, at least for fans like me who used to enjoy the convention in the 90s' and early 2000's. Like you all mentioned, there are plenty of other fan conventions out there. I'll likely go there.

I don't think Anime was ever supposed to stop being an underground subculture in the west, personally.

FWIW asking questions of Japanese guests is kind of an art. I work with them a lot in my department and even with decent translators you have to know exactly how you have to phrase something for them to get what you're asking. A lot of times the translators don't know enough about the guest in question to translate things right either, which is a pain but hard to avoid.

>> No.6961873

>>6961772
>Enjoyed it in the 90's

Yeah, when it was small... there's a totally different metric that has to be applied to a 60k+ attendee convention. Those numbers motivate corporations.

Right now, Japanese Anime companies consider the US a secondary (at best) market. They will wait until the last minute sometimes before sending exhibitors and acts to a convention in the US because they're waiting for their primary market (Japan) to react.

Having an industry anime con in California will bring better acts, guests, and larger exhibitors to the US for fans to enjoy.

Keep going to your smaller fan-based cons, and enjoy the culture. I understand you're hurt, the con you grew up with has changed. The direction they took does bring a subculture closer to mainstream. Which to some people clinging to their hipster mentality of being special, may hurt their feels.

I'm just glad there are still amazing choices to experience outside of AX, and that the anime culture in America is still growing.

I have to agree with a lot of this.

I'm amazed at what's happened with the industry in the last few years, and AX is right at the forefront of it. It's the one place where Japanese guests can go and directly interact with American fans and really see the level of interest we have in their work.

I'm really happy to see the state of the industry improve and love being able to sit up in our staff room above the dealer's hall and see industry booth lining the front like in the old "glory days." The new generation of distributors have done an amazing job of making the industry work, and you see it most at AX.

it's just that once it went mainstream, it attracted the wrong kind of people to the market. Hence the crash. That's a Japan problem too.

The staff asked a crowd of people to please leave the area after they got out of a panel, to make room for those wishing to get by and for those waiting to get into the room for the next panel, but all these people did was continue to stand around all talking to each other, in the middle of the damn hallway, ignoring the staff. So of course, finally, after repeated attempts to ask them nicely had failed one guy with a strong voice arrived who flat out told the idiots to FUCKING MOVE! Which finally got the group's attention and they dispersed.

I dont blame the staff member for having to yell at the crowd, they werent listening and they were creating a real issue for other con-attendees. There were similar issues all the time in the hallways, People stopping in the middle of a hallway to get their picture taken, rather then politely moving to the side, or asking the cameraman to relocate to a location that allowed the crowds to move freely.

I witnessed staff trying to be respectful and polite, but the attendees were just ignoring them, then hell yeah, the staff member had every right to yell if that is what it took to get some stupid self centered little prick(s) to listen. Unless those people were having a naked orgy, while burning an american flag, while linking arms, wall to wall, keeping people from walking past them, while screaming treasonous socialist rhetoric without a permit to publically gather, that's no reason to ban anyone.

It's the same stupid staff whiteknight that keeps coming in here and just making all staff look worse.
If you hate the "entitled" (probably because they actually spent much more than you to attend, sometimes thousands of dollars and taking time off of work) attendees, you shouldn't volunteer anymore. You're probably damaging the con more with your bad attitude.
There's no catch-all situation, sometimes the attendees didn't do anything wrong and got fucked. Sometimes the attendees were spaced out and staff got fucked.

It's a convention crammed with 60k+ people.

What the fuck do you expect it to be like? Orderly lines with everyone politely allowing everyone to pass in an efficient and expedient manner?

Is this your first year volunteering or something? have you ever been to another con? This shit just happens, and if you think you can kick someone out for it, you may as well just call for them to shut the whole thing down, especially if you think crying "fire hazard' somehow makes your claim legitimate and not just retard.

So now you're claiming that people should be banned on the off-chance that someone starts a fire and that the handful of people who weren't moving before would remain stationary and continue to block the hallway, making escape from an enormous burning building impossible, thus causing the deaths of tens of thousands?

Because that's what you're saying. That's retarded.

A fire hazard is a room with a large capacity for people, but an insufficient number of exits, or a large amount of combustible materials improperly stored with insufficient protection, or unattended flames, or improperly serviced electrical outlets.

People standing in a hallyway, making foot traffic a little slower is not a fire hazard. Even still, a possible fire hazard is no reason to ban anyone either, otherwise you'd have to ban every person with a lighter because a smoker could possibly use that to start a fire.

Get fucked, man. You've got nothing and your ban-happy bullshit is moronic.

>> No.6963908

>>6963900
Not should, could. You're completely twisting the idea.
That's an interesting definition of fire hazard, though I don't think it addresses the idea that objects obstructing the pathway to exits should also be counted as a fire hazard.
I understand where you're coming from though. I still think you're facing an uphill battle, give it up anon.

>> No.6963937

>>6963908
You keep saying that I'm losing, but you keep back pedaling.

People standing around and slowing others down isn't a fire hazard. No more than any other place with a ton of fucking people in it is a fire hazard because people are panicky and do stupid things in emergency situations.

Not moving when they were told to by the unpaid volunteers doesn't constitute some grave act of destructive disobedience either.

In both cases, both arguments that have been brought up, there is no reason to ban anyone. Furthermore, "disobeying or ignoring staff" is not listed as a rule that can get you banned. In fact, there's actually very little information at all on what can get an attendee banned, meaning that if you're going to try and pull that shit, the attendee has every reason to say "Fuck you, I wasn't informed of such a rule and you can't possibly kick me out for doing something I was never told was punishable."

But, let's not forget the most important point: Volunteer Staffers do NOT have the authority to ban anyone. Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying.

"398 people complained to Con Ops about the staff and were banned permanently."

Highly unlikely. You have to REALLY fuck up to get banned.

"An inside source, who shall remain anonymous, informed me that a few of the volunteers were paid illegally. My source told me that they (themselves) didn't take the money. Volunteering means that you work for free."

Wrong. You are compensated for gas/food. That isn't being paid, that is compensation. That is perfectly acceptable.

"The same source I talked to said that next year, Anime Expo may be changing the name to Japan Expo, and the prices for badges is going up even more. For all four days, $100. Premier pass is $175."

That...that once again isn't true. Japan Expo is in its own entity. And unless AX specifically announced it, the passes will stay at $80. No higher.

"If you lost your badge, you had to pay $45 for one. If you didn't have the money, then you wouldn't get your new badge. Simple as that."

This has always been a policy. Too often, people will say they "lost their badge" in an attempt to get their friends a free badge. It gets abused, and many other cons hold the same policy.

"Not to mention, the food on the food trucks was way over priced."

Welcome to food trucks. They're always a bit pricey because it's how they live. It's for quality food and worth the cost.

"Hurr panels had people standing cause there weren't enough seats so that's a fire hazard"

Then he goes,

"They weren't letting more people in after the panel was filled."

Could he/she be even more of a fucking autist. You never go full retard.

tl;dr entitlement, waah I didn't like how big cons run

Also, I have a direct statement from con ops:
"People are banned for multiple policy offenses or stealing. Breaking the rules is usually a 1 year ban. Theft is a 3 year ban. 2 lifetime bans were made, 1 for thefts totally over $300 and 1 for attacking LACC security.

No way we made 300+ lifetime bans."

I work Ops at ALA, and have been doing so for about three years now. My process of getting people to stop congesting the halls is as such:

>Letting them know they're in the way
"Hey guys, do you think you could take that picture elsewhere / horizontally / stand closer to the wall? We have a lot of people coming through and I just need to make sure the way is clear. Thanks!"

>If they're still in the way, nice warning
"Hey, sorry to bother you again, but we really do need this hallway clear. Can you please move to the side? Thanks!"

>If they still don't move
"Okay, come on, guys. You need to move. I don't want to get you in trouble, but I've talked to you three times. I need you out of the hallway and to the side, or moving and somewhere else. I /will/ get someone to move you if you won't move for me."

>If they start giving me attitude
I radio to base and say we have an issue with a group that refuses to move. They'll take care of it.

I usually don't have to tell someone more than twice to get out of the hall, usually because they move on, or want to comply with us.

It shouldn't be hard to get people to move out of the way nicely. The only reason anyone should be manhandled out of the way or yelled at is if they're giving you attitude and refuse to move.
