Alright HSG, let's discuss some pet peeves with Homestuck cosplays.

For me, it's when people use 3D film glasses for any of the Prospit boys or Eridan. I'll admit, I was guilty of it too since I didn't really have anything else around at the time, but it was for like a day since I decided to look for some actual rectangular shaped glasses after that look much nicer.

speaking of meenah, does anybody have any suggestions for her braids? I'm thinking about just getting some long wefts from arda, but I'm 5'8 and I don't know if they'll be long enough. I don't want them to drag on the floor because that's a hassle but I'd like them to be below my knees at least

Hello seagulls, i come to you for advice.
Im re-making my genderbent eridan (again) and this time i want to fix the weird mushroom top bangs I had going on last time (among other things). I've been watching countless tutorials and deciced I wanted to ventilate a new wig so it looks similar to dei-sandvich's, but im a tad stumped.
What sort of hair do I use? Im looking at doctored locks and they have a ton of different bundles so im not sure which is the kind is the right kind to use here.
Also, when I put it on, how should I attach it? do i bobby pin and spirit gum it down, or is there some other way?
any general lace-front help would be greatly appreciated, as well as further ideas/advice. thanks!

My first instinct is to say don't do it. But I'm not fond of Rule 63 as far as Homestuck goes, so ymmv.

Anyway, go for loose (wefted would also work but it does mean more work cutting them loose) fibers that are double the final length.

I've only seen it once or twice, most people go the lazy route. Some girl did it really well at Katsu, especially considering that the update where he got god tier just happened around then. She wasn't in any group shots though but I did see some random pictures of her around. Don't have them saved though.

hey cgl, i'm doing a dynastystuck vriska, and i was wondering how you all would tackle the skirt. i'm not sure if i should leave it flat or try to add some kind of boning to it to give it volume (and i'm not sure how to do that, either). what would you all suggest?

Agreeing with >>6938680 that you should look at historical garments for your basic shape. It won't be as ridiculously big as its drawn, but that's pretty much impossible to do. You can also fluff the skirt out by adding a more skirt layers underneath your outer one, or try experimenting with putting tulle between those layers if all else fails.

My recommendation would be find a wig that's thick enough for you to just push up in the back and have it stay a little (my favorite is Arda's Hansel)-- use a hair dryer and gratuitous hairspray to keep it shaped the way you want. This probably isn't very helpful, but hopefully the wig recommendation can point you in a nice direction.

Ngl it seems a lot of the BNFs have jumped ship straight out of Homestuck to Dangan Ronpa or Attack on Titan, or are at least talking about doing their last Homestuck cosplays at Otakon AX or some other con coming in the next few months.

I used to get really irritated that the only good cosplay I could see were BNFs and ive talked about it on here a lot about it, then they all left and suddenly I realize the reason all I ever saw was them is all that was good was them. The only classes you could get away with using a what pumpkin shirt on are Heir, Knight, Prince (but you have slit the sides), Page, and Bard. Everything else is either long sleeved or too long.

But the What Pumpkin shirts are the wrong color most of the time. I haven't looked in a while but if my memory serves me correctly the hoodies are the right colors and the shirts are always like, the hood colors or something.

So I was in lolita general for coord advice and saw my cast list got posted, I haven't been on here in a while so I figured I'd answer questions haha.

I got one Dirk audition and I ended up casting them for their Terezi instead, and I got one Dave but they weren't that great, I was close to casting them as Meenah though. I'm actually surprised I didn't get more especially because I have literally every kid but the Striders, but I really didn't get a lot of auditions for this.

I was really shocked honestly. Surprisingly enough the most auditioned for character was Nepeta followed closely by Karkat, I only got those two striders. But i'm also noticing a LOT of people backing out of doing homestuck panels because they're moving onto other cosplays, the Q&A that Alex is doing may not even have a full cast, I think there's three or so characters who got literally no auditions and we have to pull friends in to fill slots.

Remembering to put my username as the subject this time. Metro i'm actually not doing any new Homestuck, I know at some point I'm going to try to make Mindfang because ive been saying I would for years but she keeps getting put on the back burner for other obligations.

I know a lot of my friends are sort of in the same mindset which is finishing up cosplays they've wanted to do for fun in small groups, like AU or fanart outfits or characters they've been meaning to do for a while but never got around to, but as far as I know no one has any sort of groups for Metro or Otakon that are more than 3 people. A lot of people are actually skipping Otakon this year all together.

Nope, it's still going. Looking from the cast list, it seems like most cosplayers are mediocre at the very best (pic related). How do people feel about others cosplaying like artists drawings of outfits? I'm going to do this Aradia and I got a rude comment about it, so far I've gotten pretty close to the outfit but I've changed a couple of things to fit my body better is that bad? I feel like with pictures like these you can have a little more freedom to so creative outfits. What's your opinions?

i think what a lot of people don't understand is that fanartists, like mookie for example, have absolutely no idea how the hell clothing works
so they create these elaborate designs that, sure, end up being objectively nice pieces of fanart that someone who doesn't understand how to translate a 2D image into 3D then decides to cosplay

but that still goes through the wig. the only way i've heard of that only sits on top of the wig is the bobby pin method, and that only works for smaller horns, like karkat's.

i haven't seen any ways to mount larger/medium sized horns without having to go through the wig, to be honest.

Okey so I am currently working on my armsocks, problem is the tights I have ordered turned out to be darker than my make up by a shade or two, also they have a bit of sheen to them.
I can solve the shades problem by darkening my make-up, since I doubt they are too dark for troll grey. But is there any way I can go about removing the sheen? it is not much but enough to make them look unnatural.

Also, wouldn't I have to iron the paint to make it stick? I painted my shoes with watered out acrylics and the stains on my jeans still hasn't come out from that, but I don't know if that is an alternative on synthetic stretch.

I'm planning on making my first ever homestuck cosplay for a local con in Malta and I really need some advice. Do people react badly to changes made to an otherwise canon cosplay?.I'l be going as The Condesce and I've been looking at some costume designs for inspiration and noticed some of them use a leotard instead of a catsuit. Now I personally don't dig the leotard, I've seen some cosplayers that pull it off but it isn't something I'd consider for myself.Would something like a bodycon dress work?. At any case i'l just play it safe and work my way around a matte catsuit.

When it comes to the ancestors it's a lot about interpretation. If you chose to do a bodycon dress I would say chose a really short one and show off your legs, the most important part when you do outfit alterations like that is that you 1) get the right feel of the character (for example, Nepeta probably wouldn't dress in anything fancy. Terezi would probably be really tacky. Kanaya is a fashionista) and 2) execute it in a way that is as professional as possible. You will already have people on your back for not being 100% canon, the best you can do not to get shit is to make sure your execution is good and clean.

Of course, this only really matters if you plan on uploading your cosplay online. IRL people rarely care about the quality of your cosplay, and if they do it doesn't really matter anyways.

I say go for it. CGL is more nitpicky than your average fan, and it's be more important for you to cosplay something you're comfortable in than to be perfectly canon. Especially with the ancestors since they're abstract designs to start with (IMO the best ancestor cosplays are fan interpretations anyway).

It's fine cosplaying just for fun or whatever, it is after all just a hobby. But at least have some self awareness, god. You are being cheap, you look cheap, it is okay being fine with looking a bit cheap because again if you're just cosplaying for yourself then really who gives a fuck. But at least acknowledge that you are cutting corners and then for the love of god don't pass that off just as some any cosplay advice. Maybe say that "oh if you just want some budget glasses you can use 3D-glasses with the lenses popped"
Personally I'm okay with the 3D-glasses thing as long as you at least scratch the logo off but man, it simply isn't professional cosplaying so don't try and pass it of as that.

Like I said before, if you cut corners you need to work usually at least twice as hard to make the results look non-budgety.
