Hey Seagulls, I need your help. I've lurked here for quite a while, and have become infatuated by the lolita style, and I wanted to get into it. I know what to do and not to do to avoid being an ita, too. However, I'm pretty much broke. I know Lolita costs quite a bit to pull off ($239 for a burandou dress for instance, and even more for the rest of the coord). I've fallen head-over-heels with some dresses, and then looked at the pice tag, and sometimes I'd to do sweet or classic Lolita, but be not sure how to start a good coord. This is especially true with overly-decorated sweet lolita coords. Can you more experienced Lolitas maybe give me a few tips to start off? I'd like some tips on the financial portion and coordinating better, choosing a dress, etc. Thanks!

Go slow. Start with a simple JSK or OP, something that you'll be able to coord with other things later. Infanta, HMHM, and other Taobao brands have dresses that can start at $75.

Bodyline has some decent quality stuff as well. If you use the conversion trick (change the currency from USD to JPY) you can make it even cheaper.

thanks! this will really help! I also have a question on a brand i've had my eye on recently: Dream of Lolita. are they good? the prices are fairly good and the dresses are beautiful.

DOL are replica makers, the fabric feels like waterproof tarp and the print quality is so-so. All of their dresses are just copies of Angelic Pretty dresses, if you want other knockoffs that are slightly better made go for Oo Jia.

oh, thank you for clearing that up for me!

What >>6917451 said. The fabric wrinkles in the worst way, and I've heard that the print runs.

Are you looking at their items on Clobba or Qutieland? If you want to get into buying Taobao items, there are lots of good brands that put out nice things consistently, but DoL is not one of them. Try Dear Celine, Infanta, Krad Lanrete, Surface Spell, etc.

Start by buying stuff from Bodyline, the blog F Yeah Lolita has a great guide on how to separate the good Bodyline stuff from the bad.

Just wanted to throw in that not every item they make is replicas. I've bought some of their non-print, non-replica items and they're alright in quality. Thin fabric, but decent construction and definitely wearable. It really depends on what you're willing to pay for quality.

For instance, I have a blouse from them that was $4 USD. It's got pretty thin fabric, but since I wear undershirts anyway, it doesn't bother me. Compared to one of my blouses from Bodyline, which was $40, I can safely say you get what you pay for from DoL. I like that blouse and would gladly buy more from them. Just be aware it won't be superb.

Also new to lolita. Just wondering, where are the best places to go about buying lolita for Australian seagulls? I've seen a lot who buy from taobao in my local comm- is there a better way to do this?

Also, what are some aus-postage-friendly secondhand sites? I'm not picky; I'd be happy to find even a single older burando dress just to get started. I like classic and country, perhaps even hime/royal.

I just got this skirt from DoL, I certainly wasn't expecting the fabric to be fluffy, and part of the print was sewn together. I can attribute the wrinkles to the packaging, and so all over I' d say the quality is good, not great. But I like it for the price.
OP try to catch brand sales. I just got an IW skirt for $50.
