My two most expensive cosplays got that way from cost overruns and experiments that didn't work out. One was fur (I overbought) and the other was a Rapunzel with a wig I tried to fibre optic (it didn't work, and the fibre optics alone cost $150 plus shipping). Having said that, I learned a lot from both and managed to offset my costs by onselling the fur and giving some away as birthday presents to other cosplayers, so I don't think I'll make either of the same two mistakes again.
