Well, I'm a relatively new Texasfag so I missed all the DFW shit (and don't know what really went on, no one will talk about it) but I didn't have any terribly bad experiences at A-kon this weekend.

I went to the hetalia 18+ event and that was it, and I cosplayed Hetalia on Friday. I've had a few Homestuck people come up to me and I generally avoid them because I'm paranoid about the paint, so other than Homestuck creeping into the DFW com page here and there, I haven't noticed much (beyond general "I'm still a teenager" immaturity that I have come to accept based on their age).

I would be down to do Chesstalia Norway if I could get an Iceland. I'd take a Denmark, but prefer Iceland.

But from what I see about at least the DFW group is that all the shit is in the past. That is what I have been told at least, and despite some of the issues I may have with people there (and know kinda what happened before), it seems to be managed okay. I have yet to attend an event beyond seeing the people at the A-kon stuff. I'm on the fence about how much MORE involved I will get beyond just seeing people at cons and attending panels because of some personal issues and just because they already seem like a well established group. I guess that would be my only issue is that the DFW group seems to have a set group who does things and there would be any way to break into that if someone were to want to get involved in say, the panels. Now I don't KNOW that, it's just my perception.

And like I said, I'm not sure I WANT to attend meets and such. I'm really kinda old for that crowd anyway, or at least I feel like whatever original Hetalia fans that group might have had have kinda left the fandom (and Hetalia in general is kinda over run with tweens and teens).

...But did anyone on this thread go to A-kon?

Never been to SJ so I can't tell how that com is (still too new to Texas and I think the only drama was with the DFW com, and seriously, no one talks. When people ask on here about it, no one will say anything other than "That was a long time ago" pretty much. It's a bit strange, but I do know about the secret com, kinda).

But good luck at SJ and with finding a group. My home group wasn't that stellar, and so maybe that's made me so "meh" about Hetalia groups and meets in general. There was drama (and there were only like 15 of us, geez) and just... meh. No real sense of community, or at least, not one they extended to me despite us having meets and doing panels.

Yeah, about 2 years ago, I had a small group here. We all just stopped talking. Some people moved on to Homestuck, some went to other fandoms, etc. The Facebook group's still up but there haven't been any posts in a long time.
We never did panels because the other Hetalia groups kept overshadowing us. The meets were alright though; everyone in the group was mature for the most part. It was fun while it lasted, and I have been strongly wanting a group since Hetalia in general seems to be dying out but I'm still a massive fan and all....

I have no idea what I'm doing but I'm hoping to make some friends at SJ.

Yeah, groups and the community were what made Hetalia, Hetalia. It's one of the reasons I was so strongly drawn to it in the early days was this overwhelming sense of global community. That's sad to hear, but I do think larger groups tend to do that. It's almost a celebrity type thing, they tend to dominate panels and such. I'm not in Hetalia groups (or don't want to be) for the fame, I just want that sense of community which, for me, is so much a part of the fandom.

I just feel like even if I went to the DFW events I wouldn't fit in since I moved to Texas and am new and everything.

Old-ish DFW Hetalia fag here. Since the hatchet seems to be mostly buried I'm not gonna talk about what did go down.

However I'm still firmly in the fandom and not a teenager so I don't 'fit in' too well with the main group either. I mean, if you've been to one meetup you've really been to them all. Red rover and picnic food is okay once or twice but it's not much fun after that.

But I'm always looking for group cosplays (especially for chesstalia because I've been wanting to do that for some time now) and I do hold my own small, private meetups sometimes -- I've been wanting to have a casual meetup and go to a museum, or have a board game day (including Risk) or something, really anything other than a random park and food.

So hey, here's a throwaway e-mail, send me a message sometime fellow DFWfags, we can talk group cosplays or plan a meetup or whatever. Especially the anon who's new to Texas. The Hetalia fandom has always had the strongest sense of community out of any I've been in, so let's try to keep that alive.

New Texasfag anon here. I may shoot you an email. At one point there was talk with someone I knew of starting a second group for adults and that, er, friendship fell through to say the least. That and I know there has been drama with the secret group stuff, so I wouldn't want to step of the DFW turf (well, I wouldn't want them to feel we're stepping on it, but if it's a private group, then it's private and that's that).

I just want cosplay friends and older peeps to talk about Hetalia with. Since yes, we don't need to let it die out. And with so little content from Himaruya, we have to keep that sense of community alive while we can.

Yeah, it's a more "manga" style. I can see what the original anime was trying to do, but in the end it really came across as cheap. The new season looks so much more polished, even if it is still Studio Deen pulling their old tricks and the quality isn't that great. It looks better, and that's enough for me. But I never expected Hetalia to be a great anime. I don't like it because I think it's a "good anime."

And somehow the rest of the anime world has a hard time accepting that. I have caught MAJOR flack for simply stating that I like Hetalia.

As if there's much else. It does show they're strictly anime-fans, though, because otherwise they'd recognize that Deen is animating events now, things we've been waiting on.
And with that bit at the end: it's likely? I still get tons of pictures taken of me at conventions while in Hetalia cosplay, but there's not as many other cosplayers. The fandom has.. hopefully grown up? There will always be those weeds lying around, but it's progress..

I'm not entirely convinced it's completely grown up, I just think, for me, being an old Hetafag, I'm more in the background. Both because of my age and how long I've been into Hetalia, I just can't connect with these tweens. I feel there's a fundamental difference in the way they approach fandom (I believe it's this generation that's responsible for shift from ANIME cons to anime cons with non-anime things).

And I used to not be so quiet. It's not like I HIDE loving Hetalia, I've just learned it's not worth getting into it with someone because they are always going to "win" the argument. I know there has been a backlash against Hetalia for a while, but I was starting to think we were fully over it now that Homestuck was the next big thing, and especially now that even Homestuck fans are moving on to other shows (I thought it might be Dangan Ronpa, but I saw a shitton of OFF at A-kon).

I think it's a combo of us not having a lot of official updates (even if the comic is serialized), a large chunk of the fandom having moved on, and some of us just getting older. I still see the same problems with the weeby fans we've had for years, they're just not SOLELY Hetalia fans anymore. I definitely notice less Hetalia cosplayers (specifically at mid size and smaller cons, at larger cons there are still enough to look "big" even if numbers are down).

But I'm kind of glad. I'm a little disappointed Hetalia doesn't get the love it used to, but maybe the parts of fandom that invaded with the anime have moved on and we've weathered the storm? I feel like we as a fandom are internally over everything, but the outside fandom community still sees us as a cancer. I really thought we were done with this Hetalia hate, but I've had more people shit on my love of Hetalia NOW than I did 2-3 years ago when the fandom initially went down the drain.

Sorry for being so long winded, but I do have another story to add that gives me hope! While at A-kon, the girl next to me in the cosplay contest was dressed as Hungary. She was 14, but quite smart and really aware of the fandom. I have never met a more mature 14 year old Hetalia fan. Hopefully she is not a rarity, but even she felt like the rest of the anime community was against her for liking Hetalia. She described herself as a "sane" fan, and knew about the incidents (she mentioned AB) that had given us the bad reputation.

Of course, I met plenty of weebs (saldy, 18+ weebs) at the Hetalia After Dark panel, but even some of the younger fans are history lovers instead of the other kinds of fans.

Oh god, I'd never go to an 18+ Hetalia panel, that just sounds like a headache waiting to happen. It was... idk, it's just the audience forcing their opinions on the characters and trying to get a certain reaction. They set you up. It was funny for the first few minutes and then it became painfully obvious it was just awkward and the same two people dominated the questions. I just always feel like these panels are forced. I have yet to see a really smooth, "in character" cosplay panel.

I've also got to stop asking Eurovision questions. Apparently no one watches that anymore... but at least at this panel people knew what it was.

The last Ask A Nation panel I went to.. I left after 15 minutes because it was just recycled jokes over and over. "Why are you so awesome?", "What do you think of England's cooking?", "Will you ever accept Belarus' proposals?", "Who's Canada?", etc.

I'm familiar with Eurovision, but I don't watch it, honestly. I'd prefer Eurovision questions over generic ones, though.

I just recently put up another Hetalia panel for A-fest, it's based off the "Hidden History" panels the guys who wrote that content did at AWA. It's not a copy of theirs, but it's in that same vein of "here's the history behind all the jokes and stuff in Hetalia."

I've wanted to do that panel for a while and recently found someone who wants to help with it, so I felt confident putting it up for voting. Anyone is welcome to use the same model and such or borrow the idea, since I borrowed it from the original panel anyway. The AWA panel is actually on youtube so that's good reference. We're still going to be in cosplay, but it's more of "X character is running it" than a dialogue between characters... but of course we'll still edge in some jokes.

I guess I just presumed fandom was still into Eurovision. I got into it because of Hetalia, but haven't hardly met any other people to talk about it with.

I have a friend who used to be into both Eurovision and Hetalia, but she's kind of lost interest in both. The Hetalians on Tumblr, unfortunately to say, are really into Eurovision, but it depends if you feel like sifting through it.

I try to stay away from Hetalia tumblrfags. I can't keep up with their antics. They lost me at 2P, actually fandom lost me when they all left and went onto Homestuck.

If our panel gets approved, I would be happy (with the permission of my co-host) to put the content online so people can "syndicate" the panel essentially. Or at least use the formatting. We're considering going regionally (or by country group) and picking out one scene or event to explain per region. We only have a 1 hour panel, but it's like explaining something for Scandinavia, Northern Europe, Low Countries, Southern Europe, Baltics, HRE countries, Axis, Allies, Africa, Asia, Micronations, Americas, etc. And not necessarily all those, but I'd like for each group, if possible, to learn a bit of the history behind one of their stories.

We are NOT doing it by pairing. We considered it, but decided that breaking all the fangirl hearts as to why a pairing or family group may not be historically correct is a recipe for disaster. But I think regionally/country group is a good way to simplify things and help us do all the research. If it's approved and successful, I'd be more than willing to give out the info for people to use and adapt. Ours is a derivative, too.

Ah, I actually do like 2P, but I can't blame you if you don't. It gets messy, especially because it's heavily fan-generated.

That's a really good idea. I'd mostly just talk about the strips that don't get explained enough, or references I've never seen anyone catch, etc.
I'd love to deconstruct pairings, in all honesty, but yeah, that would not end well. You might be able to explain what history people use behind crack-pairings, if there's time left, but I wouldn't put it on an agenda.

I think our small "time left" we're going to spend cracking jokes. My England wants to rip on France a bit and I'm always up for an opportunity to be canonical and tease Denmark. But in future threads I'll let fellow Hetafags know how the panel is progressing (if it is).

Yeah, they were fun. So maybe Hetalia general? We can ask for good cosplays, and maybe we'll get some since there are so many bad cosplay threads active right now. We all just started posting pics with our comments and I think that maxed out the images more quickly.
