This is an insane personal annoyance but Harley Quinn cosplayers that have too many diamonds. It seems like a ridiculously simple issue but Harley has a 3 diamond pattern. Most store-bought shit has all 4 diamonds, so those always stand out, but some fans make their own stuff and still add 4 diamonds instead of the three.

Also, people wearing bodices for costumes that don't have bodices.

It's dumb and rather petty but I'm getting tired of seeing Asuka (Evangelion) or Rei cosplayers with the hair clips wrong. I mostly see this with Asuka's but I've seen them upside down (small end up) or backwards (small end facing front). Maybe it's because I'm anal retentive, or maybe it's because it's an easy to check, easy to fix mistake but it annoys the hell out of me.

I have a pair of clips that I bought off taobao, and they literally do not go on the head like that. If you try to put it on sideways, they'll slip right off. Since then, I've removed the clips and fixed on some better ones, but since most hair clips i've seen are like that, I'd imagine it's not as easy to fix mistake as it seems. Just my two cents.

Also, hetalia or whatever it is. The were just wearing a coat and had different national flags. There were tons of them. Big props are no problem if your spacially aware, but most of them were swinging around flag poles left and right. I dont watch it and made the mistake of asking one neck beard hambeast about it. He was wearing a grey wig that he just put on like a hat (hair sticking out from underneath it everywhere), had a russian flag, a teddy bear, and tried to speak with a nasally, high pitched russian accent. He landed in a seat at our table since we had a couple chairs open and tried to talk to us.

Urgh yes this. A former friend of mine will wear his cosplays over a Deadpool suit for every con. That stuff is not funny or original anymore, and imo it never was.

Otherwise, sluttified versions of characters; genderbends or skimpy OC designs.
Also kind of gets old after a while when certain female cosplayers keep cosplaying the same type of over-sexualized characters. They can't seriously expect people to buy the "omg Cammy/Yoko is my favorite character everrrr!!" thing when they do that over and over again. Some variation is nice every now and then. I suppose the last thing is more personal than anything since it gets down to specific cosplayers and not just stuff in general.

I hate comments like this. There is no minimum complexity needed to be considered as what's cosplay and whats not. Cosplay is simply dressing up as a character. If that character wears basic clothes that are easy to get then that does not invalidate the activity.

I've met cosplayers who get all pissy when their friends get asked for photos because they are wearing an identifiable costume, but the person with the camera asks them to step out of the way because they are in closet cosplay, or stupid fuckwits who think they deserve the same level of adoration and praise for slapping on a shirt and pants.

Scott has a number of specific t-shirts and accessories that a cosplayer would need to get or make to best suit the character. Same goes for Ramona, who is easily identified by her booty shorts, circular bag with a big star on it, and her big fucking hammer.

The characters are distinct, despite their otherwise simple designs. Doesn't meant you can get away with putting on some blue jeans and a t-shirt and just say "Hey, I'm cosplaying Scott Pilgrim!"

A better example might be Luffy, who looks super simple on the surface, but the death is in the detail. A good Luffy cosplay takes the time saved by grabbing a red shirt and some shorts and puts it into making sure all the little accessories and details are right by altering and tweaking those clothes.

I do a group SP cosplay with a bunch of my friends, and 90% of the characters are literally just normal clothes. Lucas Lee is a black t-shirt, jeans, skater shoes (I went the extra mile to tape up a skateboard to look like the movie's), Todd is a grey Punisher shirt and jeans, etc.
The most complex design I think would be Envy, or Knives.

I love shows like Doctor who and Sherlock, but cosplay from them just needs to stop. Most of the characters have extremely uninteresting outfits, and unless you actually look like the actor you are going to look like shit. I have seen very few cosplays from popular tumblr series look good.

Also shitty disney cosplays. If you don't have the skills to sew the fucking dress, do something simpler. This girl churns out cosplays like a madwoman, and everything she sews is innacurate and looks like shitand looks rushed, and her wigs are always ratty. I'm sick of having to see her crappy disney cosplay every con I go to.

I also really hate lack of petticoats/hoopskirts with various cosplays. If the dress is a ballgown, it needs either a giant petti or hoopskirt+petti, no exceptions. The rest of the costume can be beautiful, but without the proper undergarments will look like shit

Ryu. I get it you did karate for 2 months and you were able to cut the sleeves off your gi and buy a long piece of red fabric for a headband. How about some fucking details. I not only bought a brand new gi to do Dan Hibiki but (after dyeing it pink) I trained like fuck in it so it would start to look worn in and so I'd have the muscle to even pull it off. I went from 165 to 180 lbs without putting an ounce of fat just for that fucking costume.

The Devil is indeed in the details and my costume didn't look like shit because I put in the work on myself. Obviously the rest of the costume is kind of a slap-together.

Oh and I had a skilled friend handle my wig completely. I had no clue what I was doing. Still don't.

I dunno' man, especially in the case of characters like Solid Snake and Big Boss, you really have to have the face and build as well as the proper camo/sneaking suit/equipment to pull it off. It's one big cohesive look, you know?

Random ill-fitting jungle camo and a few pouches does not a Naked Snake make. :(

As for the few Kaz cosplayers I've seen, the issue always seems to stem from sloppy uniform construction and especially bad wigs.

I, for one, am tired of blatant T&A cosplay. Don't get me wrong I do enjoy my tits and ass; however, when you're cosplaying a character that does have valuable assets but doesn't show them off AND you're flaunting them then you're doing it wrong. Really wrong.

Female/Male versions of the opposite sex. It's just dumb. If you're going to do the character and you are the opposite sex, just try your best. When I get back to the States I plan on cosplaying Chiquita from Jormungand and I'm definitely not a female. She's just too bad ass to pass up!

And to add one to the list:
People who commission props and take credit for themselves. Little else is more aggravating and frustrating to a prop maker, especially those of us not as renown as BlindSquirrel and Kamui.

*sigh* okay, Homestuck does have very simple characters to cosplay but this one of the biggest cases where it looks shit unless you ACTUALLY pull the character off (like Joey over here, he focuses on being as canon and close to the characters he cosplays as possible.) The character designs are ultra simplistic, even during the little animatics where Hussie bumps up the detail. Your little head-canon, fanfiction interpretations that you came up with after a few hundred cumulative hours spent on tumblr does not make your closet cosplay and half-assed wig any more legit or 'canon'

And, yeah, some people have gotten really creative and detailed with some of the designs, but so much of that detail is pulled out of their asses because what they are working from is a smudge of pixels.

I'm assuming they're referring to ebay or mass-produced costumes being easy to spot. For those costumes, the material is usually an bad choice (almost always a shiny satin or some mystery polyester), the costumes are poorly fit, and a lot of details end up missing completely.

For my part, what pisses me off massively (and I'm a fan of the show!) are people who cosplay Castiel from Supernatural *with wings*. What the actual fuck. You only ever see the shadow of his wings in the show, and thought that that was a great reason to buy some $5 party store bullshit feather monstrosity and stick them to your back where they will just piss off everyone around you in the con and every time you turn abruptly they are going to hit someone in the face. WHYYYYY. I can understand if a costume calls for wings and you need them fair enough but when they're not even canon in the first place? Why.
Luckily I'm in Australia so we seem to be spared the "I wore a plaid shirt so therefore I am Dean Winchester" casualfags.
