I think there may be some truth to this. I would say that a lot of the more mediocre members of the online comm are young girls who haven't quite grown out of their weeb phase yet and are looking for a ~*kawaii fashion*~ to dress in that is in expensive and seemingly easy to pull off. The problem is that because they don't have fashion sense and can't dress themselves normally, they mimic what they see in magazines to the letter when it comes to clothes and makeup. And that obviously doesn't always work.

It's the same principle behind why so many girls can't dress themselves outside of Lolita. (Because Lolita is so matchy-matchy, comes in sets and brands release lots of coordinating items outside of sets, it's easy for girls who have no fashion sense to pull a coord together and still look good. Though even then some fail.)

Also, for a while there was a joke that most of the online community failed at Lolita, vk or some other Japanese style, got butthurt and flounced before joining the gal comms.

Allow me to disagree. While it is true that the main concepts behind a good Lolita concept are matchy-matchy and relatively easy to pull off, so is normal fashion .
Thus, I believe that there is no excuse for any girl to be unable to pull off normal fashion when she is an expert at coming up with good everyday coords in Lolita, as the same basic knowledge can be used for both of them.
