There's a certain divide that has formed between cosplayers who are focused on construction/conventions as apposed to those who are focused on popularity/photoshoots (BTW check out that sweet aliteration)

So far opinions about this are divided. I think that the two aren't mutually exclusive.

One anon mentioned that they thought simpler costumes for photoshoots were pointless and pandering to fans. Others pointed out that they cosplay simple costumes because they love the character/series. I didn't see the response to that.

Hmm. If you're referring to me, that's actually not what I said. I talked about how I was more interested in seeing more complex costumes, and that some people were more interested in seeing a simpler costume of a character that they loved, and popularity seemed to happen more that way. I then mentioned that it was a good strategy if you wanted to get famous, and clarified that I wasn't hating on anyone for what their choice of costume was, which a couple of people took from my first post.

Pretty sure that's not what they were trying to say - just that they aren't really interested in making that kind of costume themselves, or seeing it?
I'm half the same too, I enjoy seeing really intricate costumes that people make. I'd still enjoy seeing a cosplay of a character that I loved, even if it was just a school uniform/casual clothes etc.

>> No.6829095

If I was famous I'd want to be famous for making amazingly detailed costumes, not for cosplaying popular characters.

I don't see why NZ cosplayers aren't famous, half the shit we pop out is way better than the stuff that goes to the WCS.

>> No.6829273

>>6829095
I agree, there's a lot of high quality cosplayers here. I think a lot of the really popular people overseas are popular because of their work at cons (meeting people, networking in some cases, photoshoots at cons, interviews) and that's what platforms them into online popularity. We just don't see that step, being on the other side of the world.

Good idea! Eyeshadow is really good for unnatural colours, but for natural colours/everyday definitely stick to an eyebrow pencil or eyebrow kit.

I would also work on the shape a wee bit, the picture on the left is a good guide for the general shape. Try google eyebrow shape and read up a bit on different shapes because eyebrows can make all the difference with framing your face and can change your look a lot.

For starters, people could actually give criticism. I have almost never gotten feedback on my costumes, and it sucks - I want to get better, and sometimes you can't see flaws in your work that others can.

Also - people need to learn to TAKE criticism. I won't comment on people's work unless I'm on anon, just because people fly off the handle and take on the attitude that they're already perfect, so why would they listen to some fuckwit on 4chan? And I'm not being shitty, I'm pointing out that things don't hang properly or could use some interfacing! Hardly a personal attack.

NOPE NOPE NOPE.

Sorry Anon, but that eyebrow placement is WRONG. Your eyebrow should be starting where the end of your nose bridge is. So, NOT the nostril line but the nose bridge line. Why? Where the nose bridge ends is where the brow bone begins. Longer brow bone = Smaller looking nose bridge = Nose width bought down. If you start your eyebrows at the nostril line or pupil line, you're making your nose look wider and your eyes totally unbalanced. Most of those diagrams are floating around from late 90s/early 00s make-up, but they are so wrong man.

I can try? I'm not a very good teacher so I'll just kind of throw out anything I've been taught or learnt about how to pose? I apologize if this is shit.

Learn your best angles. Sit down in front of your webcam and take pictures at a variety of different angles of your face and body. Then look through them and thoroughly scrutinize each one, deciding just where exactly you look best. Of course, don't just have one default to go to in photos, have at least 3 or 4.
Everyones faces look best at a different angle.

Your body will always look slimmer at a 3/4 angle. Tense your stomach muscles don't suck in if you're revealing your midriff (honestly I don't know how this works if you have a bit of weight there) as sucking in can look really silly in pictures. Standing with your legs slightly apart will always convey a stronger feeling than with them together.

To make your face and jawline look a bit more defined, move your head forwards (not noticeably so that you lose your neck at all, practice this with a mirror cause it can easily look dumb) and tilt your chin down slightly.

When posing, pose with intent, think in your head what the character would be thinking as they are in the pose. This will also help with facial expression as well as conveying the feeling you want to better. Of course study how the character acts and stands in canon.

If I'm lost on how to pose I ask myself "What is the characters primary emotional state?" "What do I want this photo to make people feel?" "What is my location like and how can I use that to my advantage?" generally that helps a lot.
Props and interesting locations make things easy mode of course.

Good tips!

Adding to this; look at pictures of your character before hand and practise doing a couple of their signature poses and take selfies. This way you can alter it to find how it looks best on you and you will have some go to poses.
I used to flounder if someone asked me for a photo, not knowing how to pose or doing the same pose over and over, but looking at character poses really helped with this.

Don't be too subtle - poses and facial expressions you think looks silly can really pop in photos- over exaggerate.

This one is easier said then done - but relax. If you are worried about being perfect then it will show on film. Trust your photographer, they don't want you to look bad! Play around, dance, goof off, sing, interact with your surroundings and props.

Practice in front of the mirror, and as someone else suggested your webcams. Collect photos you like and copy the poses and expressions.

CHIN UP. Always!! Or almost always. Swear to god I spend so much time shouting this at people during shoots, but it makes a world of difference. PI said something awesome in a recent thread, and that was to treat the camera as a person, and interact with it. Best advice I've ever heard.

A lot of posing well though is practise - like >>6832964 said, practise in the mirror and learn what angles work well for you. And don't be too shy - often a pose that you think will look good just isn't exaggerated enough to come through on camera.

Having said this, though - the photographer needs to work a little too. If a pose looks good, but isn't quite there, move a little to the left or right and see what happens. The angle an image is shot from makes a big difference too, and it's often easier to take a step sideways than to get your model up and rearranged completely.

Nothing wrong with making a costume because you love the design. Seems like you've played the first few games anyway so you're obviously a fan of the series. I've done that before, played the first 3 games of a series then cosplayed from the 4th game that didn't come out in NZ. Also, that design is gorgeous, I look forward to seeing it!

Do people think a 'general cosplay discussion' thread would work on cnz? One that was more NZ cosplay community specific. I enjoy seeing the discussion that can come out of these threads, and like other anons are sad that we don't seem to do that without being anonymous. However it doesn't seem like there's really a place to have these discussions? Occasionally it happens on twitter but not the same scale obviously. I'm remembering the big sex thread we had a few years ago - everyone talking, civil, open discussion, with the exact point of topic changing every so often as different things were brought up.

Do you guys think that would work on cnz? Or do you think no one would respond?

I have a feeling that you kind of need anonymity in this case - as much as I want nooblets to know how fucking irritating it is when they pull this shit, I also don't want them to take frustration with some of their actions as a sign that people don't want to help. I'm worried people will get discouraged, and just give up the hobby rather than accept that actually all they need to do is not be an idiot. I also don't trust people like Highlander not to come in and get all fucking defensive on behalf of whoever it is he decides is being persecuted and just derail the whole thing.

Maybe if the mods want to keep a close eye on it for a while? It would be nice to actually say to the new crowd that they're being dicks, without anyone losing their rag.

Yeah, the annoying thing about spotlight is that their lycra, while expensive, is really good quality. It's also nylon, so you can actually dye it a lot easier than you can polyester! Shape retention is the biggest difference with different grades of stretchy lycra-type knits, a lot of cheaper fabrics will not spring back to shape once you stretch them out. Kutwells is awesome, though! I haven't been in Chch for ages it feels like, and definitely not the cbd.

Designer Textiles in Lovegrove Crescent in Otara. It's a factory outlet store for an industrial textiles manufacturer or importer or something, and they have a HUGE range at fantastic prices. It's mostly stretch fabrics, but they do have some non-stretch too, and things are arranged by type of fabric then by colour, so it's actually not nightmarish to find what you're looking for (cough spotlight).

Glitteranddance.com.au is good for things you can't find within the country too, wide, wide range of really good stretch fabrics (seriously if you need lycra, 4 way stretch vinyl or anything that's sparkly, they will probably have at least one option for you), smaller range of non-stretch and their accessories are awesome if you're needing anything beaded, fringed or rhinestoned. I know a few girls who got costumes directly from here and I have around 3 made entirely out of their fabric.
Angelfabrics is also great quality with a decent range and I can vouch for them being good but if you're looking for more specific shit you need to go to oz.
The fabric for the costume in the picture is from Angel around 4 years back and stood up to around 50 wears and multiple washes while still being in the same quality and shape it was when it was originally made.

Dance fabrics are my passion and if you have any questions about shops or stretch fabric, come at me (you all know who I am).

Depends on the fabric, I wouldn't attempt anything with a foil, velvet, probably some of the lace or hologram effect but lycra can be.

I haven't had experience with dying anything else but as the pages have the information as far as what the fabric is on their pages it should be easy to figure out what will and wont dye.
All the stuff they make can be made out of whatever fabric you want from them.

For leotards and such I'd check http://allaboutdance.com/ first as it generally works out cheaper than anywhere else unless they've dramatically raised their prices since I stopped dancing.

I don't have one, but I can understand while people do. It is a good way to share progress and work with people that don't have cosplay or art-specific website accounts like dA, tumblr, worldcosplay/etc. and not have to be facebook friends with everyone who is interested. If you add a lot of cosplay friends on facebook sometimes it gets hard to seperate/cut off those you don't really know or added on a whim, but don't want to unfriend because they seem interested in your cosplay.
