It's not that the majority of people feel legitimately bad or concerned for the person when they're bitching about their issues, it's just as entertaining to watch and egg them on in hopes that they'll produce more lulzy bullshit.
Problem is drama cows mistake this as legitimate attention and it makes them feel important and that everyone must want to know more about them. The reality is people could give a shit less.

I know this one girl, ugly as balls, that kept getting really poorly done ~trendy~ tattoos just because people would 'like' them on her facebook. And she took that to mean people thought they were good when they actually weren't and were done by a very sloppy artist.
She would get even more the more people liked it and encouraged her to get them, not realizing it was actually destroying her image. But that's how important attention was to her.
