Hey, can I get some critique on my Sober!Gamzee makeup? I've already been told the scratches aren't far enough apart, but is there anything else I should work on?

Space apart the scars, make the marks look less like greasy crayon and more like actual scars. Make your makeup less greasy in general, sealing and powdering should fix this right up. Also, make it look less runny.
Last note, Not sure if this is the lighting or not but you need to reduce the shine in your wig, putting it in fabric softener will do the trick.

So, I just got into homestuck. Well I've been reading for a while because a friend got me into it, and while I'm still working my way through it I really like Rose and know I want to cosplay her at some point.

I came across this fan art floating around the interwebs of her god tier form, I know it really doesnt look like her actual outfit, well I mean it does and it doesnt it's fan art after all.

My problem is I want to cosplay it, and I know cosplaying fan art is a thing that happens and I like that cause theres cool fan art, but I dont want to feel like I'm 'sluttifying' a character because I just like this more intricate design. I was thinking maybe bring down the skirt some so it doesnt split quiet that high? I dont know opinions? I might just cosplay her regular god tier but I do really like this idea since I enjoy the idea of adding some detail to what are some very simple designs.

Some characters and outfits look really nice with a snow background. Has to at least be a pretty background though... and ya know, not be a 50's theme

For a lot of them, these are their first experiments in costuming and cosplay. I know I'm in the minority on this one but I really welcome people to try without being afraid of failing.

I agree. Sort of. I know age means nothing and there are some really stellar teenaged cosplayers out there, but for the most part, I don't judge kids under 18 too harshly. But if you're 22 and you still can't paint a symbol on a tshirt, then hell have fuckin' fury upon you.

Hey guys, so I'm a pretty big fan of Homestuck and I've decided to cosplay as Tavros because I'm actually stuck in a wheel chair. I was just wondering if anyone had some sweet cosplay tutorials [I already have the chair and the hair] they could link me to. Thanks.

Also, I've been reading a lot of horror stories lately, and I just want to ask whether or not the fans are going to attack me. Because I'm seriously afraid of people jumping on me or flipping over my wheelchair. Any advice on this subject?

IA. They need to be aware of their own skill level and at least TRY. A four year old can tell that loose threads everywhere and puckering hemlines don't look good. And if you are for some odd reason unable to understand how body paint works pick a character that doesn't need it. The point with HS cosplay is that there's so many simpler designs for beginners to attempt.

Unskilled is no excuse to be lazy but it's ok to be a beginner and we all started somewhere.

That is when it comes to more casual outfits like John's Vriska outfit or Dave's regular outfit, although the latter of which is a bit too easy so it gets judged even MORE harshly.

Should beginners not do that because of how ridiculously easy those two are and would be judged even more harshly?

Basically, if you can't sew or make things, if you can only buy the right clothes, should you not do it because it's too easy?

To be honest- I would much rather welcome beginner cosplayers with open arms than be trapped in a circle of aging elitists. Sure, sometimes beginner costumes are... exceptional in how fantastically terrible they are, but everybody has to start somewhere. I in no way encourage or endorse laziness, but I do always encourage people to try new things, even if they're not so good at them, even if they might fail. Perhaps expecially if there is a chance of failure. I think that failure is a very important part of growth.

Or should you just quit cosplay right there since that shows you don't know how to make anything, just buy things, so you shouldn't even start?

Let's say somebody wanted to cosplay as say God Tier John. They'd buy a shirt and print or iron on the symbol, buy the pants, shoes, wig, glasses, all that'd be missing is the hood and they don't know how to make it. Would it be acceptable to commission it or tough fucking luck, you either make it yourself or you don't do it at all?

of course you can commission it. Cosplay is so much more than just the outfit, and commissioning a part of the outfit is like getting a friend to make your prop. It's totally acceptable to use any means necessary to make your cosplay look as good as possible.

About gt John though, the official shirts aren't accurate, so wearing one of those wouldn't be a good idea.

Just jumping in, where I originally come from a good percentage of people get their cosplays tailored or commissioned, but they're no less a cosplayer than the ones who make their own shit from the ground up.

A lot of my local cosplayer friends struggle with a sewing machine, but they're still great cosplayers in their own right, and if you look at just their photos you probably won't guess that they don't know how to sew together stretch fabric.

There's more than just "can't work a sewing machine" that makes a cosplayer bad imo. Cosplay as a hobby has evolved a lot, some people really enjoy the construction aspect as well as just dressing up, and some people just want to dress up.

That being said, I do also think that people need to put effort into looking nice when they're in costume, regardless of whether they made their shit or not.

PAX is Pros-aide (a kind of glue) mixed with acrylics.
It is really good for any high-rub-low-joint-low muscle-pull areas, such as neck or arms or bare skin on per example the stomach. It isn't very good for hands or faces though, on the hands it peels off and on the face it restricts your movement.

It is good because it doesn't rub off and stays on for quite some time. I applied mine the night before the con, it stayed for two three days before it started peeling (legs and neck). It was great because I didn't need help applying makeup on my neck.

Personally, I'd go with the Max Pures. I have the GBT Blue lenses for John, and they're super vibrant, but their green lenses are a more muted color than the blue ones are, so the Max Pure Green contacts would probably show up better in pictures. Plus, up close, the rims of the GBTs are actually pixelated, and it bugs the hell out of me. I prefer lenses with either a black limbal ring or one that's been evenly colored a shade darker than the color of the lens as opposed to the spotty transition the GBT's have. As far as eye color goes, my eyes are actually hazel too, so you shouldn't have a problem on that front as far as noticeable color goes.

I apologize for having come off as condescending towards those with actual serious mental issues- such was not my intent.

The message which I was in fact trying to get across was that I know tons and tons of people post on their blogs/twitters/whathaveyou saying things such as "I have issues with anxiety" or "I'm depressed" which- you can be those things without being clinically so. You can have issues without being in need of therapy; you can be depressed without being clinically depressed. There's a spectrum to it, and I think that most people dip their big toes into the shallow end.

I was also trying to be lighthearted and humorous but clearly my comedic styling is lacking.

I think though that there is a lot of general knowledge about metal illness these days. And by general I mean wiki or web MD knowledge. With this I feel a lot of people self-diagnose and end up convincing themselves that they have a true mental disorder.

I know tumblr has a lot of mental illness talk and while that can beneficial it can also gets people thinking, “Gee I wonder if I have that”.

IMHO this is the kind of shit an annoying number of people do in general, not just a BNF trend. Everyone has issues, but not everyone is willing to keep them personal when there's a ready ask box ripe for the *HUGS*

Finding a cosplayer with zero personal issues probably isn't going to happen. Your best bet is to follow someone who either doesn't talk about IRL stuff, or who only posts reblogs and cosplay.

Yeah, I've seen the shoulders. Their designs are so inconsistant, though, so it's really hard to go by that and say it's canon. For example, there are some older panels from the beginning of act 6 (back when Dirk was first introduced) and he looks like a little boy.

the thing about binding is that it depends on how much breast tissue you have; if you have a lot of breast tissue it makes the boobs heavier and harder to compress. in theory larger boobs = more tissue but it doesn't always work that way. I have a friend who has D cup breasts and can just push 'em right over and in, meanwhile myself as a C cup its REALLY hard because I have a lot of breast tissue.

typically if you're using a real binder you'll be able to get them flat but there's a change they just have a lot of breast tissue which is gonna feel more like you're shoving rocks into your ribcage.

Hi HSG, I was wondering what the best method was for filling in cracks in model magic horns and then sealing the paint after it's dry. My friends recommended spackle or clear polish to cover little cracks and then Mod Podge for when you've finished painting, Is this a good way to go or is there something better I should do?

Smooth cracks over with sandpaper and some glue. Paint will hide cracks if they're tiny but if they're huge, go with a different method like paper clay, mache or foam. It all depends on which troll you're attempting.

Don't use model magic for say some of the bigger horns cause it's not good for large support.

No problem. Using a bit of liquid super glue should help keep the pieces from cracking more and just make sure to not use soupy paint. Something thick and the cracks won't show up. If you have some glue over flowing from the cracks, sanding it will give it an even surface.
