Can we have a funny lolita/cosplay newbie mistakes thread? No vendettas, more of babbys first. No "so-and-so didn't know about Pixyteri/Dakota" because no1curr.

I saw recently, I think on behind_the_bows, where some anon was shocked at a picture of Maki in old school Angelic Pretty. Couldn't believe it was her and she was wearing something so ita. I had a chuckle over that.

All the Bodyline-chans bawwing about Day Dream Carnival being a rip-off of the Bodyline carousel print is pretty hilarious.
Like, bitches do you even Sugary Carnival or any of the other carnival stuff AP has done?

>> No.6774672

When I just started out I wasn't very good at all this petticoat business, and I tucked my petticoat into my underwear for the whole world to see ... I think I stood around for some 15 min for a train, and then took a 30 min train ride standing up, walked up some stairs, it was about midday when a couple old ladies motioned to me that my skirt was tucked in. Oops.

>> No.6774681

I used a tutu as a petticoat for a while. The funny thing is that it kinda worked, lol.

I still suck ass at putting on wigs. Ready to chop off all my hair just to lessen the hassle.

>> No.6774721

Bought a pastel twin tail wig before a petti.
Wore my crappy 2nd hand replica to a tiny con and used SS shoes without a blouse, no petti, no bloomers. I realized later it was really short and I probably flashed people going upstairs. I also hand sewed bad lace to a pair of knee-high socks. Thankfully I was behind a table most of the time and everyone there were either itas or weebs.
Did have a proper petti when I wore it again at the next convention but I ordered the wrong color bolero from Bodyline and didn't take the right measurements and it was awkward shaped since my bust was too big for it. I guess I made it work though. I also didn't know how to pose.
That was a year ago. I'm doing a lot better now.

My first cosplay...I didn't realize how badly the fabric would stretch over the course of the con. It initially was skimpy, but everything was still covered. By the last day of the con, though, security escorted me to my hotel room to change. Definitely been more careful with fabrics since.

Also, frayed ribbons I was too tired/drunk to notice and fix.

After seeing a few pics of old school EGL back in 2006 I figured "hey it's all about black and white formal clothing with some poof and lace, right?" So I went to the thrift store and bought the first white shirt that buttoned up to the collar and a shapeless black tube top with a raschel ruffle.

The shirt didn't even fit and the top constantly rode down, and yet I couldn't figure out why it didn't look as good as that jabot shirt with laced up corset on the photo. I wore it proudly as "egl" anyway.

Too bad I can't find that pic...

I was given advice to look at poses in Kera / GLB snapshots (just look for the scans online). I found that to be helpful. I also set my camera on auto-timer and pose with it to get a good idea what poses are flattering on me.

I find it a little more difficult when I have cross-body bags (which are most of mine), but I usually cross one leg over the other and point my toes. I had a bad habit of holding out my dress and I'm trying to get away from that. There's a cute AP hand bag I want but I went on a brand spending spree recently I don't have the funds for it unless I start selling more of my other stuff.

My very very first attempt was pretty awful. It was a pretty cute tea length sundress, but I butchered it to try to make it lolita. I made it shorter, added some shitty lace, and then wore a leg avenue petticoat that was too long and didnt even fit under the skirt, a boring blouse under it with open toed shoes that didn't even match, and a crappy handmade pink headbow.

I'm so glad I never wore it out, I posted some photos on here to make sure that I wasn't totally off track, and to be honest the comments I got were surprisingly nice and helpful.

My second outfit was a beige floral bodyline jsk, boring blouse, and then... pink shoes and black tights. :( Not vomit inducing but I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up in an ita thread.

I'd post pictures if I had any.

didnt look bad but it was just super casual and i didnt feel pretty /: and i had to walk a shit ton in those heels. plus bringing the skirt and petticoat took up so much room in my suitcase
