I've never tried Otome before, and I posted this dress a few months ago and decided to play around with it! Would love some advice (sorry for the bad shoop)

How is that not otome? There is no specific rules in otome as it is in lolita. It's more about the feel of the outfit, and I definitely get that feeling from those outfits.

I personally think that if you're not sure about putting together an otome outfit, a good idea is to stay away from using a lolita dress or skirt in your outfit. It's too easy to accidentally make a bad lolita coord. There's a really fine line between otome and casual lolita, and it is sometimes difficult to tell if an outfit is one or the other.

There isn't really any rules in otome, you can wear plain or patterned dresses, short or long, skirts or shorts and it can be young and cutsey (like ETC style) or more classic looking. In lolita you need to wear a lolita dress or skirt, and have the right silhouette. Otome means 'young lady', and there isn't really any set rules. The point is to look young and feminine. It is more about the feeling of the overall outfit.

Where would I aquire dresses that have an otome sorta vibe? Or at least shops that I could find stuff with the feel? I really want to get into it but so far the only shops that give me this feel is Franche Lippee (which will burn holes in my pocket) and Sechuna. Is there a more affordable start off point?

A lot of shops you find on the high street or malls. There are quite a few cute dresses/skirts/blouses/tops that all work in otome outfits. OP's dress is from a thrift shop. I have bought some cute pieces from quirky little independantly owned boutiques in my local city. Because there's no exact silhouette you need, it's so much easier to find pieces.

IMO it's more about how your coordinate your overall outfit. Dress with cute print and cuts are very otome looking, but you can also just wear a plain colored dress but coord it with a cute cardigan and/or tights. Dresses that tend to work well is flared skirts, cute print, peter pan collars etc. Personally I don't have any brand at all and never use more than $40 on one dress, but otome is probably the j-fashion style I wear the most.

Can I please get some concrit on how to improve this outfit? I'm not 100% on the shoes, thinking of switching to some brown mary jane style heels instead. Also I did have a cardigan but I stupidly left it at work, so try to imagine it with a cardigan that's a similar colour as the hat.

Thank you! The shoes are just from a Chinese seller on ebay. You can probably find them on Taobao. I just searched "brogues" in the women's shoe section. The make is Salt&Pepper, if that's any help. The shirt is just a plain burgandy top I got in New Look. Skirt is from Vampire Bunnies (http://vampirebunnies.bigcartel.com/))

Maybe replace the tights with textured over the knee socks? (like wool ribbed socks or something). Might help break the elements up a bit, I tend to find that fine knits, tights and that particular cotton that's common in lightweight skirts just tend to blend in at bit texture wise.
