Would an obviously deactivated real ex-gun fly at a con?
Could i, say, find a broken side-by-side double barrel shotgun, weld the chambers closed, removed the trigger mechanism and cut it down to be that one gun that the scout from tf2 can use? What if I painted the barrel tips safety orange?
Pic related, could weld barrels closed.

I'm sure you can use them at photo shoots!

>> No.6757600

It would depend on the con.
One of the more stringent cons is PAX, where they don't even allow deactivated airsoft guns.

If it's a con that doesn't allow real weapons, painting the end orange won't do you any good, since someone could just do that to a working gun.

>> No.6757606

I think it heavily depends on the convention themselves, but I feel like they would still be very iffy on a REAL, if totally inoperable gun.

Like MTL said, you could probably have it for an off-premises shoot but I would still be very wary especially of the temperaments of local authorities you might come across.

>Would an obviously deactivated real ex-gun fly at a con?
This seems like a bad idea. It's hard to tell that a gun is indeed safe. Even if it's welded shut, it's still not a toy; those barrels were made to shoot. I'm sure con staff would be wary of something that could still have rounds chambered.
>What if I painted the barrel tips safety orange?
I would imagine this to be a necessity; convention staff are real sticklers for the orange tips. Still, the best thing in this case is to contact the staff for the con well in advance.

>>6757606
>I would still be very wary especially of the temperaments of local authorities you might come across.
This. I'm not sure how the laws affect deactivated firearms, but federal law states that shotgun barrels must be at least 18 inches long and that the gun in total must be at least 26 inches long. The scout's shotgun, being extremely cut down, will almost certainly run afoul of the law and bring you a lot of unwanted attention from the police. As other posters have said, it's probably a better idea to go with a modified toy shotgun. The commitment to authenticity is appreciated, but a combination of the potential problems with the police (who will indeed notice that your gun is real and not a toy), difficulties with convention staff and the fears many other people hold about real guns makes this not the best idea. Not to mention the extra weight of a real gun. Even lightweight guns will still probably weigh you down an extra 5-7 pounds, which doesn't sound like a lot now, but will make you that much more tired after a long day.

Also op if you're in a state that allows open carry a police officer CANNOT detain you simply for having something that looks like a gun in a non threatening manner. Part of it would depend on the laws for the actual state in question, but they can usually get away with that sort of thing with an appeal to "public safety," given you have large numbers of people gathered in close proximity. Same reason you see a lot of "weapons free zone" signs in places like theaters, stadiums, and universities. That said though, those "weapons free" mandates are often based on no legal ruling and there have been cases where they were shot down in court. It's just that most people see the sign, think, "Oh, damn," and don't bother to contest it.

Frankly I think a lot of it's just bullshit, generally. For a con specifically, if you're attending a paid event, there's probably a deal in there somewhere (either when you bought the tickets or even just posted on the building) stating that entry constitutes acceptance of their terms, in which case they can pretty much make up whatever floats their boat. You don't have to agree with it, but you can't enter the con if you don't.

The main reason I'm looking for a new one isn't that the old ALICE pack is particularly worn, but rather because it's huge. I need something that's literally about half the size. The only bags I have are that thing (which is basically the size of a three-day pack, if you're unfamiliar) and a much smaller one that only has enough space for a few bottles of water, some basic first-aid supplies, and a handful of granola bars. Oh good, someone who shares my dislike of Camelbaks.

Ok, on that note, it's 2 AM and I'm going to sleep. It's been a pleasure cluttering up the board with you.

Sorry if someone's already said this- I started reading through the thread until the mudslinging fest.

As someone who works security- no, it wouldn't be allowed.

Security has to look at guns from a distance and determine whether they're real and dangerous or not. Having a real gun obviously is going to set off a warning. Most security folk wouldn't be able to tell it's deactivated from a distance. Simply painting the tips orange doesn't really do anything- it doesn't say "This gun is safe", it says "I painted this gun to look safe to fool people."

You also have to take into account hotel security and cleaning staff, who you may encounter within the convention center.

Also, many cons don't allow metal, sharpened or not.

Also also, I'm sure people are a little more cautious after the CO and MA shootings this year,

Even if you managed to find a con that did allow it, it's just too much of a hassle compared to just making a fake gun.
