So my local fabric store failed me today when I was looking for fabric for my Chibi Moon cosplay. All their nice satins were just a too light pink for my taste. So I need to order my fabric online. Since I live international I can't order from Joann's, but I found this 'Roselyn Satin' on the website Fabric.com.
I wonder if anyone have used this Satin before, because I don't want to order it and then find out that its super costume shiny looking ( I don't think so since it costs 8$ a yard, which is one of their more expensive satins).

They have the perfect color for Chibi Moon as well, so do you guys think I should order it?

Another Dangan Ronpa question, ha, sorry!
Does anyone have any good ideas on attachment methods for Asahina's hair clip? I've made barrettes and the like before, but, never with such a large gap in the design! I fear putting it on only one side will mess up the weight distribution and i'm not sure what type of clips would be both small enough to fit on both sides and sturdy enough to hold the clip up.

Why not just do the stars with paint? You could use a stencil with some diluted fabric paint and then paint in the stars. It will probably give that faded look you want. (I'm the same poster in the previous thread that gave advice on how to recreate Garry's weird jacket details, once again I apologize if my explanation sucks.)

My interpretation of her cravat tie thing: I had two longish rectangles with one rectangle having gathered ruffles on the ends and then I bisected the two rectangles with a gathering stitch. I had made another tube for her "necktie" portion and put the previous folded/gathered rectangles into the "necktie" tube.

The "necktie" tube didn't really look like a tie until I hand sewed the top points of the tube down to get the necktie look. I then put a white elastic band onto the necktie/cravat/idek so I could slip the entire thing over my head and have it hide under my collar.

So Sachi looks pretty straightforward. The only thing I can't seem to wrap my head around is her breastplate. It's... a smooth curve (aka no separate boob-bumps), with no visible seams? This'll be my first time making any sort of armor-like piece, and I think I'm going to try using craft foam. But what can I use to get a smooth curve for the front? From a cursory glance around my room/my house, I don't think I have anything similarly-shaped to mold the foam over (the closest I got was a large mixing bowl, but the bottom is too flat).

tl;dr I have nothing useful to mold armor on. Suggestions?

I'd guess that she used a wire to hold its shape. It's the same idea with Mami/Catherine wigs and the curls. She also could have done two wires, sandwiched that between black cloth, then layered the hair over it.

Well, if you decide to go the duct-tape route, pad yourself out using just about anything to achieve the desired shape for the chestplate and then tape horizontally over your chest. If you go somewhat loosely over your boobs, instead of pressing down in the middle, you won't have two bumps.

Has anyone experimented with water proofing heavily styled wigs? I've got a big wig I've been working on, and living in the Pacific Northwest, I'm worried about it starting to rain if I'm doing a photoshoot or at a con and it damaging my wig. Not like it's going to fall apart if water touches it but I'd just like to preserve it for as long as possible.

Another question, so this is the wig in question that I've been working on for awhile. I'm almost done finishing it up, I just have to make another one of the hair tentacles, the only thing I'm really lost on it what to do with the hair hanging down in the back. Originally I wanted to make some sort of armature to wrap hair around for the back but I'm going to have to be transporting this on a plane eventually so I'd like to make it easier to pack and make sure it doesn't get hurt. I'm not sure if I should just leave it hanging or get some flip going down at the bottom, and if I do that what so of method I should use. This is an unusual question only marginally related to cosplay, but...
How the fuck do you deal with a catty bitch who can't get over a broken friendship 4 years after the friendship ended? I haven't talked to this person for 4 years yet sometimes I see them piss and whine on 4chan or tumblr and it's just so fucking embarrassing. This is the first time I've even acknowledged their existence in the past 4 years.

I've gone through this myself and granted in my case the person doesn't whine on 4chan or tumblr (most likely can't find either of those because he doesn't like to google for some reason) and it just sounds like the other person didn't find closure on the situation yet.

I'd say ignore it because clearly the other person doesn't get it and won't get it and no amount of talking to them will make them understand.

>Place FLAT STRIP of lycra fabric along neckline
>Pin in place, don't skimp on the pins
>Tack the strip in place
>Have assistant let go
>Depending on how stretchy the leotard is the strip should have a natural ruffle
Then:
>Machine stitch
You need your assistant for this and it's a pain in the neck, take your time and do this very slowly. Assistant needs to stretch the fabric while you're sewing it so make sure they know what you're on about, do a few stitches at a time then reposition.
>Hand stitch
Possibly easier but if you suck at hand sewing then maybe it's not worth it. Resume previous position but just hand stitch while your assistant stretches the leotard

Make sure you put a thin strip of bias binding on the neckline once you've finished or it will look fug

What's the best way to learn/practice sewing?
I took a few classes in high school, I know basics and I can follow patterns. Should I just keep doing little projects(I really like making hair bows) and trying different and more complex patterns?

>> No.6757067

>>6757036
Patience. You will get faster with practice, but if it takes a week to get everything perfect, take the week instead of rushing.
Work in small sections, and make sure your sections are seperate as you work. If you can, watch how a skilled hairdresser applies foils to see what I mean. Clip hair that hasn't been worked yet away from your section.
Now I only use human hair, so I don't know if the rules are the same dor synthetic, but I like to use a touch of hairspray prior to any styling tools. It helps the hair to stay neat and for curls it keeps them from bleeding together. Don't use a ton, you don't want to saturate the hair, just dust each section with an odorless spray immediately before styling. After styling, DO NOT TOUCH! This holds especially true when using heat tools, because the hair will still be maleable while it cools. Hairspray stylingtoo, because the hair will stick to your hands and pull apart. In fact, the less your hands touch the wig, the better. Use combs and clips to move the hair.

I would recommend to get a book of sewing basics that will walk you through things like: how to hem, how to finish seams (french, top stitched), pleats, bias tape, how to put in a zipper etc. etc.

Then try to make things that incorporate a technique you haven't used yet so you can get familiar with them. Also, I find altering existing patterns really helped me with figuring out how patterns actually work: that is how the shape of the pattern will influence the shape of the clothing.

NEVER put it in the dryer. Ever. Also be sure to check your fabric over carefully when it arrives. If there are any flaws (hickies/white spots where lint blocked the printing, crocking/spots where ink rubbed onto another surface), contact them to have it replaced ASAP or you'll run the risk of being stuck with unusable fabric.

That seems like it would work fine, BUT you're in for a world of pain if you put the wire anywhere that will end up with you standing on it.

Personally, I'd make it large enough that you need to really wedge it in there, and just place it on top of the inside padding with something soft wrapped around it. Not only will the tightness keep it out of your foot's way, it should keep it secure as well. And it's easy to take out if you really need to if you don't embed it in the shoe.

Try coathangers or that size of wire to begin with, it should be plenty sturdy.

I'm going to be cosplaying Misato Katsuragi in a small Evangelion group and I'm having a hard time figuring out a good color for the wig. I've seen cosplayers use purple wigs and personally I think it's looks pretty terrible. I was thinking either a purple black or black wig. Everybody else in our group is going with more natural colored wigs (except Rei) and I'd really like to not be the odd man out so to say, but at the same time I don't want to be overly inaccurate. Thanks!

Clearly a very hard resin or metal piece would be more costly than a fragile, thin plastic.

Just asking for anyone's experience / price for what they got. Everything I find online is just "yeah I got it 3d printed" and that's it. I don't want to go through the trouble of making the schematic and spending time comparing materials if it's going to be hundreds of dollars for a plastic spearhead or something.

Make a sketch, get a quote. It really depends on what you're doing. Just keep in mind that most 3D printers have a pretty dimensionally small capacity, you're not going to be printing out entire weapons and armor sets unless you have big money to pay someone with a big machine for a lot of expensive plastic.

It's totally viable for smaller stuff, though. Can't hurt to get some estimates. They can print some pretty radical stuff.

Go to a horse tack shop and check out their quilted saddle pads for reference and you may get super lucky and find the color you want. If not, do a layer of batting sandwiched between two pieces of cotton and you'll have to simply top stitch on the squares. Obviously you'll want to just do all the vertical lines at once then flip it and go over them perpendicularly . looks just like two rectangles coming from the hips and meeting at the top of her hips to form the inverted V at top.

They love Kirby, so they wanted something Kirby-themed. We've decided on yellow star accessories (hairpin, necklace, purse and brooch) and red shoes (most likely a pair of plain red tea parties).

I'm attempting an Ursula (The Little Mermaid) cosplay with a little bit of a chic feel to it. So far I've got a purple satin corset going on and am going to combine it with a black top (tied together at the front with lace to show corset) with 'tentacles' attached to the bottom. However, I'm at a loss what to do with the lower section of the underdress. Obviously, tentacles aren't going to cover my lower body, so I'm in need of a skirt. It has to be a SATIN skirt though... and I'm clueless as what kind of design I should go for. At first I thought a layered skirt would do, but it's satin and that would probably look like shit.

tl;dr Help, I need a satin skirt design to go with my Ursula cosplay.

When I did mine, I got two short brown wigs from ebay (that had the length at the back as part of the cut) and wefted them together to give it the thickness I wanted, rewefting parts of it. Then I put in some curlers and used the hot water trick to give it a slight curl (I was doing MGS2 Solid Snake, who is shown with wavy hair. Big Boss's hair is straighter, but you might consider doing it anyway just to get that volume.) Then I mulletted it so the curled fibres were all springy.

I made a classic!Cloud Strife armband, which was similar, by using a coil of cardboard measured and then fleshing it out with craft foam and Miliput (using model magic would probably be better if you want a smoother look - Miliput is really hard but a pain to sand). Then I gessoed, rub-n-buffed and sprayed with clear lacquer.

Make sure to build it up in the inside hole so it looks to close over. I have very small hands, so I was able to get the opening of my arm guard such that it was a subtle oval, meaning that I could get it on and off lengthwise and that there was no danger of it slipping off at all widthways.

What kind of "skirt" would be good for this dude? A circle one? A-line? Also tips on how to make the hat would be fantastic.

I don't know why skirt is in quotation marks. It's definitely a skirt...

Also I say 3/4 circle skirt.

I'm working on a Brook cosplay from One Piece. Made a blueprint for Brook's skeleton face and will remake the blueprint using craft foam.

Does my blueprint look good? (its the pic on the left). Don't know if I got his face correctly

Looks good. Imo, you could make the crack on his forehead a little larger, as well as his cheek bones and jaw.
But you could do it as it is and it'll still be good.

The jaw isn't long enough, and the eyes should be a bit more round. Also seconding the crack comment.

Is there a site that makes plaid fabrics to order by design? I've looked around all the fabric stores nearby and online and I can't find anything even close to the print I need, so I'm going to have to make my own.

So far I've found spoonflower, but that's a print on fabric, which I'm not sure how well that will work out for a skirt. Alternatively, what do I do--just paint on the stripes myself?

I made a poseable doll using wire, fabric, and sculpey. I used glass stones or something like that for the eyes. Oh, and feathers.

She is fully poseable (even her wings), so I mostly just kept her balanced on my head the entire con.

Sewing with PVC for the first time---a very simple miniskirt, but I'm still nervous. It's 2-way stretch. Any advice? Anything at all.

>> No.6772178

I've used heat n bond to achieve a geometrical pattern. And unfortunately the pvc is peeling off.
I want to avoid stitching the pvc since I've already completed the garment, so it's awkward and will probably pucker.

Should I use fabric or craft glue to reattach it? Or is there an alternative more permanent solution?

Hey /cgl/, I just finished up doing an Iron Man war machine helmet out of EVA foam. I've worked with the stuff quite a bit before (done several full suits with it), but this is my first attempt at using it for a helmet. So as you can see I've got some pretty obvious crease lines on the top here. Is there anything I can do to easily hide them, or am I just sort of stuck?

thank you!

but the fact that you have done several suits assumes that you know how to deal with creases. But I know how you feel. I build mecha out of cardboard and cardboard stock and I feel your pain on round parts.

I understand why you would think that, but for some reason I've never had an issue with creases until this helmet. I guess it has to to with the dome-shape on the helmet or something?

How do you cover up the hair on the base of your neck when wearing a very short (and slightly small) wig?

My SO is wearing a short black wig for cosplay, but his hair is brown and curly and the difference in the two in pretty noticeable on the base of his neck, as well as his temples. I tried googling for a tutorial but had little luck.

Anyone?

Halp?
