ah anon, I know the exact opposite of that feel. I don't even fit an A properly I'm so flat! I wish companies didn't assume that just because I'm flat I want a bra with 12 layers of padding. I'd be fine with the thinnest layer of material, as long as my nipples don't show. I go bra-less a lot of the time if I'm not dressing professional or going somewhere where I may offend someone.

I love matching sets, but I swear sizing has gotten bigger in the last decade - I used to be able to find good supportive bras with the add 4" method but I've gone DOWN a band size despite the last changes of puberty, being 10kg heavier than I was that long ago, and an inch and a half around my ribcage. I know everyone likes to say band size=inches these days but it actually hasn't always been like that, at least with the brands I was buying from. I don't think bras are immune to the increase in sizing that's happening in regular stores what with populations getting fatter. Thankfully a 70 band in Asia (which used to be equivalent to a 32 band here) still seems to mean a 70cm ribcage.

Back when I was more old-school Victorian goth, I considered overhauling my entire wardrobe to be Victorian, including my undergarments. Full tightlacing, a chemise and bloomers every day, the works. I never got more than a couple days a week though (and nowadays I've become super lazy).

This is probably true: it's called "vanity sizing". Lots of companies arbitrarily assign sizes to make women "feel thinner" when trying on clothes. I've got some vintage clothes from the 70's that say I'm an 8, and in today's clothes I'm a 2 or 4.

It's actually nothing to do with vanity for the most part, hence why I avoided that term. The reason that (for example) Japanese sizes are still similar to what they were in the 70s is because the average size of women there has not changed as much as in the US. It reflects the fact that manufacturers have a specific size range and if your average clientele gets fatter, your sizes get bigger to reflect that - not to make them feel flattered that they fit into a size 8 still, but because you usually order in a size 6-14 with more 8s, 10s, and 12s and if you don't change the sizes to be larger you end up having to put all the smaller ones on clearance, plus there's the overheads with changing sizing numbers (all the clothing labels/hanger labels/signage). This is why at, say, Walmart, the sizes are bigger than Chanel, as their target market is fatter. Fashion-incubator has a great discussion about why it's not 'to make women feel thinner' but is just reflective of how sizing changes with population.

The small band/large cup market is definitely not something to look for in Asia - bras rarely seem to go beyond a C cup. Brands like Freya, Fantasie, Elle Macpherson Intimates (although sometimes their cup sizing is a bit small), and Curvy Kate all do an equivalent size.
