Most shonen manga/anime have some shared traits to begin with,

A lot of Fairy Tail fans are also One Piece fans, myself included, and they may seem very similar at first glance, but each series has its own characters that you root for for different reasons, its own fantastic setting, its own heartbreaks, its own triumphs. I would recommend giving Fairy Tail an honest try (without writing it off as a One Piece copy), it's a solid series that stands on its own.

If I'm not mistaken, the creator of fairy tail and one piece went to the same school (or something like that), and that's why the have such similar styles. It's a great series either way though.

I personally have plans in the next year to do an Erza and possibly Minerva cosplay.

I'm working on Erza's Heavens Wheel Armour for a con later in the year and having never done something so big I'm a little intimidated. I know I can pull it off given time but holy shit it's huge.

Not sure if the other person was talking about me, but I've read some of the anime and watched some of the manga back when it was still the hip new thang. I can get the nakama thing I guess, but tons of the character designs are basically 99% rips. I recently heard you guys even got your own One Armed Shank for christ sakes. "inspired by" only goes so far.

Sorry to bring it up here, /a/ just gets all shitposty when actual discussion happens, and cosplayers tend to be the more "down to earth" than the kind of /a/, kind of hard to explain.

Not that I've seen One Piece (I watched like one episode when I was a lot younger, didn't really like it) but it did catch me off-guard.

Who's supposed the be our Shanks? I can't think of a character off the top of my head.

I personally find Fairy Tail ties in just as much with Rave master as it does with One piece. The only big glaring similarity is the hype it puts on nakama, which I don't find to be a big deal.

That'd be Gildarts, I thought he WAS Shanks when a friend was showing me some of the newer stuff. There's pleeeeenty of "FAIRY TAIL RIPS OFF ONE PIECE" comparison images, and only handful of them are really reaching, the rest are pretty spot-on when it comes to character designs. I'd be able to maybe overlook them a bit more if he hadn't worked with Oda before, but writing off every single similarity as an homage or reference is kind of hard when it's done so much.

Currently, my plan is to make a new Levy costume and at least one Lucy outfit, but I have a lot of Fairy Tail stuff I want to do so my plans may change. I really want to cosplay Cheria, among others. I kinda wanted to do Sgt. Yukino, but I'd probably follow the manga design and do it black and white because the anime colors ended up being hideous. personally, I'm thoroughly enjoying the grand magic games arc, it's pretty fantastic
and the anime has gotten to the beginning of the grand magic games, so if you prefer watching anime to reading manga, you can do yourself a favor and skip all the filler crap

I can get where you're coming from, seeing as a time-skip is such a standard shonen manga cop-out
But, personally, I kinda appreciated how instead of turning a page to see that our heroes have gotten much stronger after training separately for X number of years, they literally missed out on seven years, while the rest of their friends, enemies, and the world kept on growing, aging, and changing without them.
If you can ever find it in your heart to give Fairy Tail another go, I would say that the grand magic games are definitely worth checking out.

I agree with velociraptor, you should give the manga another shot. It handles the time skip pretty well. They don't just disappear and come back with magical awesome powers, and the world does actually change with them gone. It doesn't follow the general cliche. Plus, I've really enjoyed the grand magic games so far, they've had some pretty cool stuff going on.

Eva Foam, maybe 3mm thick. It loses shape easily but it's more skin tight. Also it's cheaper, we improvise in the 3rd world~ (and yes it's shooped a bit)
