Anime Expo is in three months. Have you started your cosplay yet?

>> No.6704678

I've never been to a con and I'm looking at AX to be my first. I'll be going alone and rooming alone. What are the must haves? or dos? I'd like to take pictures of cosplayers with my cell phone camera since I don't have an actual camera or is that not a good idea/too creepy? I'm 26 if that matters.

I wouldn't recommend going alone.(Unless you are sure you can handle yourself.)
Because it's a big con, there is a higher chance of you running into crazies, weaboos and what not.
Cell phone cameras are fine as long as you are courteous and ask politely for a picture.

You, my friend, are making a great choice of going here first (And alone)

Take as many cosplay pics as you like, but don't be creepy like I was my first year. I was so shy that I would take pictures of people looking down or of peoples backs because I was just far too timid to ask.

Get lots of money for the Dealer room/ Artist alley. Its HUUUUGE.

>i'm currently doing the Insanity workout
My inner /fit/izen is screaming but I commend you for actually doing exercise of some sort if you're gonna be shirtless at a con. I still have horrid memories of fat Yoko from last years AX.

You probably know this but follow the diet plan strictly. You can probably lose up to 2 lbs a week and you'll look better than you did 60 days before. Personally, I would have just done a slight bulk (ie: < 1 month) and a cut until AX. Then again, my cosplay >>6705770 doesn't really require me to put on additional muscle that I don't already have and staying at maintenance is piss easy.

Little Tokyo is my favorite place to go for food! Hoping the takoyaki place will remain open this year since it always closed during 4th of July Holiday. /fit/ gets about 6 "Does Insanity/p90x work?" threads every hour. It's the butt of many jokes on the board. It's pretty much just a glorified high intensity cardio program + diet that does not produce any (permanent) muscle mass, which can be easily done with other less-impacting cardio (like swimming, which your joints love). Now you're probably thinking "but people looked ripped after the program!" The reason people "look ripped" after the 60 days is because people have lost fat, which makes muscles more visible, without actually having more muscle then when they originally started. I'm not knocking the program at all, it's great for weight loss (like any cardio/diet program is). If you've got a decent frame then it's a good program. But if you're Aushwitz/skinny mode, then don't expect to look dramatically larger than you do currently.

>>6705919
If you can make the trip (and have the money for it) try Parks BBQ. It's a bit on the pricey but holy hell that Korean BBQ is amazing.

>> No.6705958

>>6705944
ok cool now I understand it better. I am trying to slim down and it's right up my alley. And your right about my initial thoughts about the program.
never thought of checking /fit/ for a realistic idea of it.
My inital thought going into it was "I need guidance by a trainer telling me what to do each day and an actual diet plan" Now I consume alot less calories and it has been a huge educational tool for me. My portions were way too big before.

Expect a fuck ton a people. Everything is pretty fast paced. You better plan a day ahead or early in the morning what panels and stuff. Sometimes they get really full and stop letting people in especially when its in a smaller room. Expensive as food so don't buy anything there unless you don't care about wasting money. The lines are pretty long. Its usually pretty hot so have a bottle of water. There's a shit ton of shit going on at the same time so like i said its better to plan something out.

The dance is worth going to if you have friends to fuck around with and have a good time with them. If you go alone its not as fun but if you don't care about going solo then its pretty decent. It also depends on the DJs and what type of music is playing. Usually there's a mix of pretty much everything. The lines for the dance are incredibly long though. Last year they looped around like 4 times and it took like an hour just to get in.

Should I come out and assist the two in not having a shitty time? Should I go full-creeper mode and covertly assist them, cosplaying as a Sentai-Hero/Celty/Deadpool? Should I just let my boss walk into the fire because I'd rather not maybe-meet a maybe-cancerous black-weeaboo teen?

This is more for people who are con babies/have never been to AX, but AX is in LA in the summer and that means 2 things.

1) con funk is kinda common and really gross
2) it's really easy to get dehydrated

for these reasons, here are some things I highly recommend having with you at the con (I usually carry a book bag with me).

1) a big bottle of water for each day (smart water is good because it's like 64 oz but the brand doesnt really matter)

2) A small hygiene kit! You can get small clear 3x7 in. makeup bags at places like target. Fill one with things like this: A mini deodorant, mini body spray, a travel size toothbrush/paste, oil blotting sheets, small hair brush, and tylenol. (I would also HIGHLY recommend bringing tampons/pads/wipes if you have a uterus. even if your period isn't close, do it.). If you're wearing makeup for your cosplay, bring things to touch it up.

3) In a similar makeup bag, bring 2 "protein" bars with you, and things like fruit leathers, nuts, granola bars, etc. Things to keep you satisfied and your blood sugar up, while saving you from spending a ton on super gross con food.

Also, shower every night (or morning), no exceptions. Even if you are tired, you'll regret skipping, and also will be really gross.

as other anon said, good luck getting tickets if you want face value. it's $150 for a four day and that's assuming you even get to buy one. the general sales was in february and that sold out in i think an hour and a half for more badges than ax gets as a whole. there might be a second sale but it'll just be returned badges and last year there were five thousand single days total. they didn't have enough four day badges to even bother selling them that way and split them up. on the secondary market you're looking at $200+ with four days having gone for $600 (that ax badge sure looks nice now, doesn't it?). rooms are going to be $150 a night for the farther places where you ride a shuttle, $200-300 for the closer places. especially walking distance. that's your $250-300 a night.

at home i'm with friends, we get drunk, we have fun, and i don't have to drive out of town or take a plane or get a hotel. usually it ends up that we crash at someone's house for the night.

at a convention i'm with a different batch of friends, some might be in costume, some might have big ass cameras, some just normal clothes. all friends, having fun, shooting shit, catching up, but now i'm somewhere out of town with a hotel and transport fees to think about (gas and/or planefare).

equal fun factor, different sets of people, but one costs a lot more. if i'm going to go out of town for a function it had better be because something good i couldn't get back home called to me and not just "so i could socialize"

If all you're doing is "socializing" in your little group of friends you go to the con with then you aren't socializing.

People who usually complain that cons "suck" are the ones that didn't bother to meet others and make the most out of an experience. Sitting in panel rooms or buying over-priced merchandise at a flea market is not a very deep or meaningful form of entertainment. If you aren't socializing, partying, and treating others at the con with friendliness and inclusion then you're always going to have a mediocre time.

The whole point of a con is to act as a community and gather TOGETHER and celebrate our fandom with each other. It's not a carnival.

I'm pretty sure what we "want" is for conventions, mostly anime conventions, to not slack off in events and services department. To be as awesome as they were back in the 90's, at the very least.

>To be as awesome as they were back in the 90's, at the very least.

Back in the 90s every con across the board had less panels, less vendors and events like the masquerade were terribly amateur at best. The reason cons back then were so great and meaningful was because it was the age of the otaku and everyone treated each as friends. Perfect strangers were kindred spirits. It had absolutely nothing to do with the professionality or quality of its shows.

>I think you're confusing anime con panels with book clubs. Nobody meets after the panel to exchange numbers and emails. Panels are just seminars. Usually pretty boring ones.

You didn't go to the right panels, then.

>Back in the 90s every con across the board had less panels, less vendors and events like the masquerade were terribly amateur at best. The reason cons back then were so great and meaningful was because it was the age of the otaku and everyone treated each as friends. Perfect strangers were kindred spirits. It had absolutely nothing to do with the professionalism or quality of its shows.

And there is the main point right here.

Most people going to anime cons nowadays are no longer, or never really "were" actual anime fans. They were just high school kiddies who saw it as a great fad, jumped on board, and stuck around for the after parties....only to realize the conventions were already populated with nerds, geeks, and intellectuals.

This simply would not do. So the fad kids have created a social system within the conventions to make anyone doing anything "intellectual" based seem like a no-life loser, who needs to stop going to anime conventions (which is ironic, because anime cons are where they escaped to the first time to get AWAY from people like that).

And now that everyone with taste, intellect, and is an actual nerd/fan have pretty much left the anime con scene, we are seeing said conventions take a giant nose dive in terms of quality (see: California convention scene).

You all got what you asked for. Enjoy.

It doesn't really matter what brand of person goes to an anime con according to your logic since you've admitted already that you don't go for socialization outside of your small group you come to the con with. Whether we are "kiddies", "nerds" or whatever you want to label is irrelevant since you're not dealing with anyone anyway, only going to panels and buying things.

So please, just stay home. Cons are not for you and the video rooms aren't high enough quality to substantiate the travel cost. The rest of us who actually DO know what cons are for, however, will be the ones having a good time. Cons are better without xenophobic morons like yourself anyway.

We "used" to do that, not as a function of the panel, but as a means of socializing "after" panels. It was how us nerds would socialize.

>It doesn't really matter what brand of person goes to an anime con according to your logic since you've admitted already that you don't go for socialization outside of your small group you come to the con with.

Not true. Wouldn't know a lot of people without socializing with new people at cons. It's just there's less and less people that look like they are worth the time to get to know anymore. Hardly anyone is there for a good conversation anymore, everyone just wants to get their dick wet, vagina's fanned, get shit faced and spout memes.

There's more to socializing than that.

yeah, I don't think AX is big enough to need the sd convention center or gaslamp's stuff yet. The convention center's advantage is that it's ginormous. if it didn't cost any more money I'd do a straight trade but I doubt it's that simple. I'm not sure they'd need an attendance cap if they went back to Anaheim though and actually got the space they needed? The ACC site says it's the largest convention center (in sq ft) in California, and the Marriot and Hilton are right there and have a ton of function space as well, so basically AX would just have to get it's shit together and book all the space. They'd be better off that in LA because they'd have the same amount of function space, plus the arena, plus huge ballrooms in the two hotels adjacent to the convention center.

My first cosplay was Homestuck and I didn't seal my paint because I didn't know I was supposed to. The entire con, I was terrified that I would rub paint on someone and always checked whether I'd rub off on stuff I touched by wiping my hands on a tissue before touching said stuff.
Why don't other new Homestucks do this? Were they not taught manners?

Information regarding Volunteering during Anime Expo is now available. Please note: Anime Expo will no longer be reimbursing volunteers in the form of cash, check, or any refund of fees paid for badges. Please make alternative arrangements for the convention if this will present any sort of financial burden on you.

Somehow this tells me there's going to be a lot less volunteers available for things like line control. Finances must be pretty dire.

you now get entered in a drawing for prizes. 16 hour volunteers have the "chance" of winning a 2014 badge. no details of how many badges are available for said drawing. they should give out at least one premier badge out of that and some sliding scale of regular badge (20% of total volunteers?)

Im gonna be staffing this year. So i actually have 2 interviews lined up from different departments later today. One for Access Control and another for Main Events Programming. So im wondering if anybody here that has staffed or volunteered in these departments can tell me what your experience was like. Im leaning towards main events because i imagine it would be more fun.

They're basically the same job. Main Events you patrol the aisles and tell people to put the camera away and where their seat is. Access Control you tell people where they can go in the hallways and check for badges..

Whoever said that AX Idol wasn't coming back this year was right. It's still a little disappointing I'll admit, but it is what it is.

someone mentioned AX Idol costing too much which is true. Fast turnaround art assets don't come cheap. Considering how much AX actually gets out of the event and it's a bad idea, especially given the finances of the convention at the moment.

Main events is definitely more fun out of the two because concerts and stuff. Don't be surprised if you get recycled into Access Control during non-main events. There's only a few to begin with.

AX Idol is stupid anyway.

For a long time I've wanted to get at least one done for AX. I've been going for years but haven't made one in a long time, never a good one, and never for AX. But things may be looking up. 3 months to shed some pounds and I get my key supplies in a few weeks. We'll see how it goes.

Hopefully you'll see Kintaros from Kamen Rider Den-O there.

Dude, wear a white T-shirt with the Fujiwara Tofu Shop logo on it, jeans, and white New Balance/Nike shoes. Cut your hair short/dye it brown.

Walk around and talk to everyone like you were going to before, but tell them you're delivering tofu to the local hotels for your Dad's business and you decided to check out the con.

Bonus points if you bring a hachiroku
