Are any cosplayers here in the military? How many cons are you able to go to in a year? How hard is it to plan leave for cons?

I am
(currently deployed now)
I used to be able to go to 2-3 a year. I haven't gone to any since I joined.
Planning to go would not necessarily be difficult; all you need is a three of four day pass. Even a weekend would work if one was close enough. I'm about 6 hours from NYC when I'm home, so if the timing ever works I'd love to hit New York ComicCon.
But even if I go to a con, I will probably not be able to cosplay like I used to.

>> No.6687483

Same here. I would go too about 2 cons but it was just cause where I was stationed the cons sucked vs where I was from. I did make it to anime expo but I had to let my unit know 2 months in advance

Word to the wise?

Don't let your First Shirt catch wind of your conventioning.

You WILL be labelled as a "sexual deviant" and charges WILL be filed against you, even if your Commander has to make shit up. I've seen it happen.

Dang, this sounds like serious business. Would anyone with a history of cosplay even be allowed in the military?

Any reason why? Sexual assault and rape run wild in the military, but conventioning is what gets you labeled as a deviant?

I call bullshit on this
No nco has ever given me hard shit for anything like this. You need a legitimate reason to have 'charges filed' against you. And what do you even mean by that? A negative counseling? MPs have to be involved to file charges. No chain of command can do that.

Sounds more to me like someone got caught having bought naked anime girl figures, body pillows, rape doujinshi and other such trappings of a sweaty otaku than just some regular guy getting in shit for wearing a costume.

That or they were a furry.

Yeah, this is what I'm thinking. Is it looked down upon to have any anime figures in your barracks room, though? I like my nendoroids...

>>6688925
Generally your chain of command shouldn't give a fuck but it's just when people get drunk and have to be thrown back into their rooms is when shit gets broken up. Never have anything in the barracks that you cannot replace on your own dime.

You probably get laughed at and harrassed for being a pansy ass faggot and be treated a lot harder.

So a girl will be called a pansy ass faggot for having a few nendos?

>>6688960
Ah, I see. My drinking days are over (typical college partying), so it shouldn't be a problem at all.

Wow, this is crazy. What country are you from?

I started cosplaying years before I joined, still go to maybe 1-2 cons a year. The problem is really just finding the time, although I've just started on a Melisandre costume for a con in July. Other people in my unit either cosplay occasionally or go to cons, including plenty of NCOs. Admittedly my particular trade is probably not representitive of the wider military culture (we have a near 50/50 gender ratio, lots of college grads and older people, and a hell of a lot of nerds) but I can't imagine that "nobody with a history of cosplay even being allowed in the military". Then again, I can't speak for how it is in the USA or other places.

I'm military and I both cosplay and wear lolita. It really depends on where I am stationed and what cons are available to go to. I was able to go to Sakura-con for 2 years in Seattle because I was stationed about 2 hours away. Also when I fly home and go on leave, I try to hit the cons there, granted one or two of them was kinda small and not really great.

Now that I am overseas, its super limited but I am lucky that I am in Korea and there do a comic con every month in Seoul and every two in Busan so I have been attending those. And next year I will be stationed in Japan so I might go scout for some cons/expos there to go to.

As someone else said it is very hard to find the time to commit to cosplay. Lolita is easier for me to do more because it does not require a lot of work to get the costume together. And my paycheck is pretty good too so I can afford the lifestyle quite comfortably.

I have never been labeled as a deviant either, I don't know what the above person is talking about. My Chief actually let me go home early once so I can drive down to Sakura-con on a Friday. I think as long as it doesn't affect your work performance and you don't promote it in uniform you're fine. If someone got in trouble for something like naked anime girl figures, body pillows, rape doujinshi or whatever it might because they mailed it to their military APO/FPO box and it was considered contraband because it can fall in to porn category.

As crazy as this sounds, my supervisor at my old duty station attends Sakura-con regularly because he has always been stationed in Washington and I went with him once. I was surprised to find him by the furry porn booth. Never look at him in the same way again.

No one is going to look down on you. My room had tons of comic, Star Wars, and even MLP figures in it and not a single person has given a fuck.
When it comes down to it, NCOs have pretty much seen and heard it all. My love of cosplay and figures is nothing compared to some of the other weird stuff they've dealt with.
For example, two different ncos have accidently seen my vibrator. Neither one even said a word about, just shrugged it off and charlie miked.
