Off topic: that megaman really bugs me! I went to both MAGfest and Katsucon, and i saw her on multiple occassions. Why is she so damn girly? It bothers me, that if you're going to be megaman, try to act a bit more boyish. Her pose, not binding properly (or at all?) I don't get it. ugh.

She definitely has got DEM LEGS for Sailor Venus, but I really wanna fix those gloves and that sad looking bow for her. Then she'd be just about perfect.

LOL Just like when people do CLAMP Tsubasa characters. You can only wear stilts and be accurate. None the less, aside from the not too great construction of costume, she is a cute Venus.

I don't understand how white people take offence to other white people blackfacing in order to cosplay a black character.

If a black person did whiteface then it shouldn't matter either. Achieve the look of the character at all costs.

>If a black person did whiteface then it shouldn't matter either.

This is kind of the way I look at it. I know cosplayers doing "blackface" aren't trying to insult me; they're just trying to do the character justice. If I were to make myself look lighter for the sake of a cosplay, no one would be upset, or they would turn it around and make it the ~White Man's fault for making me feel oppressed, or something equally ridiculous.
These people also seem to be rather confused about what blackface really is. If they spent the five seconds to look it up, they'd see that using darker makeup for a costume is not even close to actual blackface.

I honestly am sick of people saying blackfacing and brownfacing when paler people use make up and sprays to tan for a costume.

It's not fucking blackfacing. It has nothing to do with trying to be black or making fun of/degrading/mocking the race. Sheesh.

Thank you. Seriously. I wonder if half the people calling 'blackface' actually know what it means.

I think people take offence in blackfacing if the blackfacers try to make an statement against racism.
Back in the days, white people blackfaced and pretended to be "the stupid black man", so it's not okay to do this today.

>> No.6688709

>>6688705

Actually, waaay back in the day people blackfaced because they had a high appreciation for black music.

Black and White minstrels mean anything to you? White people would (in secret, away from other whites) black themselves up so they could be a part of these music groups.

Learn your history.

I'm not that much into the scene, so I just rephrase what I heard.
Your lesson is quite interesting, but the negative connotation isn't clear with it.

lol it's 2013.
Makeup =/= blackfacing today
especially if you make up or tan your whole body, for a costume. Silly anon.

I cosplayed Malik from YGO back in 2006, and i would of felt pretty stupid if i didn't tan just a bit.

Yes, I know the difference, and I fully support correct cosplays.

>> No.6688731

>>6688714

There wasn't really a negative connotation with blackfacing among blacks - only whites.

Even in the early 60s it was shameful to like 'nigger music'. So you can imagine in the late 1800s-1940s it was definitely frowned upon for a white person to enjoy black music.

Black and white Minstrels were groups who sung and played traditional 'black music', this music was actually good and a lot of white people at the time enjoyed it, but black people didn't want whites around their music and white people didn't want to admit to liking it.

They blacked themselves up so from a distance they looked like black people to other whites, of course the blacks new they weren't black - but they understood that the white people weren't racist if they blacked themselves up because it was a risky and shameful thing to do among whites therefore they were accepted too.

So actually, black facing was very much a mark of respect for black people. Occasionally you might have had the odd racist blacking themselves up to be a gollywog character but those were isolated incidents.

Somehow white, middle-class guilt has led us in the 21st century to think of blackfacing as racist. Because apparently it's less racist to pretend everyone is the same than to embrace our differences.

Go ahead, someone might actually learn something.

Whenever we talk about minorities in the 21st century it always comes down to some kind of persecution complex.

For years we treated disabled people like retards, ethnic minorities like animals and gay people like failed human beings. As we've eventually grown to understand how bad we've been as a culture, it's natural that we want to make up for it. But the reality is that you don't move forward by pretending that the differences don't exist.

>>6688736

Er, books, documentaries? There's not really one source I can give you online as I read up on most of this stuff before most people had an internet connection. If you google stuff about the Black and White minstrels (Rather than biased 'blackfacing' pages) you'll find stuff. Also read Janis Joplin's history and go from there, she was considered a 'nigger lover' in the 50s and 60s and you can get to see some of the scene from her musical roots performing at black clubs. It's a more modern example but you can trace it backwards from there.

The Black and White minstrels where AFTER the time they blackfaced for stereotypical reasons, and I'm not sure that one thing justifies the other.

You could look into Al Jolson's defense of blackface, also interesting if you want to read up on the historical black/Jewish connection.

I just realized that sounded like some tinfoil shit, but I just mean that they identified with each other a lot, particularly as it concerned slavery.

>> No.6688774

>>6688764

No, they were just named Black and White minstrels afterwards. Reason being was that when it became common knowledge that white people were also in these groups, they became more acceptable as entertainment to other whites, so actual blacks decided to go 'super black' and use charcoal and burned cork to black their face up even more and advertise themselves as 'real coons' in order to get black only shows.

>> No.6688792

All in all, blackface was used to discriminate black people, so it's ok for people to be offended - even though they should check the context
