Never said you did, but there is sort of an unspoken bond between smokers. Usually if I bum a smoke off someone, I stand and talk to them if they seem cool.
Sometimes even if I just ask to use their lighter.
I also don't usually ask strangers for gum, where as asking for a smoke/lighter is more common. This initiates conversation with someone you'd otherwise not have spoken to.
Anyway, it was just a suggestion. There are many people (myself included) who only smoke socially, at cons/parties/events specifically.
