dear seagulls,

can we have a thread with awesome 29+ cosplayers? I am feeling depressed lately since I will be turning 30 in september and I only discovered the joys of cosplaying 1,5 year ago. I really don't want to give up yet but I get the feeling I can't compete with all the young cosplayers and people might find me ridiculous.

So. Could we have a thread with pics of fabulous 29+ cosplayers? I am a big fan of Maridah and I believe she is 31!

Actually, I think Rachel is turning 29 this year.
On another note, I don't care for her Yuki at all, she's too large and doesn't look the right age.

I am however a big fan of her Lina cosplay, but most of her older choices were pretty good.

Anon, I think you'll be fine.

Don't TRY to compete with the younger cosplayers, don't attempt to pull off twelve year old idol or loli characters. A thirty year old dressing as a school girl does look pretty ridiculous, and people will say as much. But don't let that stop you from cosplaying, just pick characters that suit your more mature features.

There are plenty of awesome characters that aren't baby faced high school students. Cosplay those and stay away from things that are better suited to people half your age. You aren't old at all, certainly not old enough to give up a hobby you enjoy. Just try to be smart about it.

Yes. Taking care of your body will help you live longer and in turn lessen aging effects.

Sometimes it can be chalked up to genetics, but eating right and taking care of your skin can help deter looking older then you are. Don't worry about getting a late start. It really doesn't matter. Pic related: I'm the Bellatrix, my friend is Snape. Snape was his first cosplay. He was 35-36, I think. Everyone just welcomed him to the hobby.

I know anime conventions tend to draw a younger crowd, but 30 is a pretty average age at scifi/fantasy/comic conventions. Plus, 30 is a good age to do literally almost any adult character you can think of. Even my friends who are in their 40's don't have much of a problem finding characters they like that are close in age to them.

I turned 30 this year, but no one believes me when I say that. I don't bother "competing" or comparing myself to younger cosplayers because I'm totally at peace with myself. I have disposable income for the hobby and my work is only getting better. Age is really just a number and those overemphasizing youth are going to be woefully disappointed as they themselves age. Honestly, there's no reason not to enjoy life as you want to. If you feel too awkward to be at anime cons, move to different genres where older individuals tend to congregate. But really, don't feel like you ever HAVE to quit doing something because the internet thinks being over 20 is time to get your rocking chair and pack it in, retire to your seniors assisted living home.

A lot of fairly well-known cosplayers who have been around since the early to mid-2000s, if not earlier, are likely 30 or close to it. I think now that a bunch of them are hitting that milestone and still going strong, it's not going to be as big of a deal anymore.

I doubt most of you truly look younger than your age. Your body will grow and your face matures no matter what you do. You can look GOOD for your age by taking care of your skin, but a 30 year old does not look like a teenager. You lived a decade+ longer, you shouldn't look the same. Plus, the way you dress really affects how people perceive you. Being anime fans, I'm sure you dress more childish than the average 20-30 whatever year old you are.

I'm not saying it's not possible, pic related. She plays a 17 year old on the show and she'll be turning 28 this year. She's petite, but the lack of makeup really helps her look younger.

This might sound like a butthurt rant, but just... don't look desperate. Act your age and embrace it!

I just turned 30 last year, and was going to quit cosplaying because I felt too old. I only really started getting into it maybe 3 years ago, and I was already feeling too old then. Anyways, long story short, I'm still cosplaying, I just stay away from characters that I'm clearly too old for.

A plus side to cosplaying mature or older characters is that everyone gravitates to the cute, sexy, young ones, so people are refreshed when seeing characters that aren't cosplayed all the time. Use it to your advantage!

I'm 25 and people confuse me for high school age on a regular basis. Last time I went to the dentist, I got asked what year of high school I was in. And last time I went shopping they tried to pitch a certain style to me by saying 'this is great for someone just entering high school'.

It's not that surprising either... my entire family looks pretty young. My cousin ten years older than me chaperoned a field trip when I was actually in high school and they kept accidentally counting her as one of the students.

Everytime a someone says this I think they are complaining about it. Because I think about how I actually looked as a teenager and I run for the hills

>terrible skin, no routine in keeping care of it
>can't do shit with my hair, crazy bushy eyebrows
>no make up or make up done so poorly to try and look older i was given pity compliments on it 'Wow you look in your 20s!'
>terrible fashion sense

I mean, when you're a teenager you constantly try and look older (laughably I might add) and then when a lot of people get older they keep trying to brag about how they are mistaken for teenagers... which always confused me, meaning they looked terrible or they looked like they were trying too hard to look a certain age.

I would never want to look like I was 14 ever again.

The people who want to look younger want to look like the chicks who were just trying to look older... is a little funny

I was super fat in high school, but no one I know now except my parents knows that. I just take it as a compliment.

It's not really a complaint (unless you want to look older to impress guys or whatever), but it's something I think of as kind of funny.

Though I do feel kind of bad when I run into girls younger than me who look older. I guess I feel kind of immature... I'm not very /fa/ and dress kind of plain. I have skincare routine, but I don't do make up.

yeah see, you don't wear makeup (probably don't pluck your eyebrows or anything) and wear plain clothes, which is pretty stereotypical young person. But I mean I don't thikn that means you look 14 I think it just means you don't have those normal points that other people look for to determine age (makeup a certain way, hair done, clothing a certain way) so they default to younger. I wouldn't really take it as a compliment I would just take it as a nuetral I guess. I mean I knew people in high school who had wrinkles, so I don't even go off of wrinkles anymore in judging people. there is that one lolita (the one who does all the 'shit lolitas say' videos) with the super deep smile lines and she looks old, but I am pretty sure she's not old.

the problem i'm seeing is that characters are getting younger and younger and the age spread is getting bigger and bigger: more younger cosplayers that will outnumber the older cosplayers. The only way that anyone can survive is if they are blessed to have A) great make-up skills or B) start making more elaborate cosplays. Personally, for guys especially, I pick the later. A guy in his late 20s, early 30s should not be cosplaying Ouran Host Club at this point and should start to consider more elaborate and more mature cosplays. Wow, it's interesting how many fellow near-30 and 30+ year olds are here. Day to day, I have a tendency to be mistaken for 17-21 (just a couple months ago I was at a store and a cashier asked if I was on my way home from school) but at work, in a definite older crowd, people think I am 25+. In terms of cosplay, I have figured out that if I do male cosplays, I look young, and in my female cosplays, I resemble my age more.

I turn 30 this year and feel a bit nervous, especially since I have noticed some fine lines and dullness in my skin. I'd like to repair it somehow, though not with photoshop since those I cosplay with I know in person, so it would be weird to look different/younger just in pics. I know all these years I have had genetics on my side cause I don't really take care of myself as much as I should. I rarely wear makeup though, so I guess that is good? I try to drink as much as 64oz in a day, but mostly milk and juice. For food, I just grab whatever but I am definitely not opposed to eating healthy. 31 here. Been cosplaying since 2002, and I feel I have no reason to stop.

There's a difference between knowing that you've aged but not looking your age, and swearing up and down that you actually look 14 but you really don't. Just about everyone assumes right off the bat that I'm in my early 20's, and are shocked when they find out my age. I don't have any deep set fine lines and wrinkles (I'm noticing small changes but nothing the average person would notice. Will Iook closer to my age in about 5-7 years, probably. Until then, I'm rocking it while I've got it. Fuck the rest. I'm in my prime. Can I realistically pull off a 12 year old? No. Can I make myself look like a believable 18-20 year old? Yes. Do I care? No.

When it comes to makeup, it depends on how it's applied and the colors used. Brighter, softer colors tend to give a better appearance of youth while darker colors look more mature. I highly doubt that this actress is not wearing makeup as she's on film. She's at least wearing foundation and very light natural colored makeup. If she were wearing dark eyeliner and dark lipstick, she'd look her age.

Wigs and hairstyles can do a lot too. More youthful hairstyles and soft colors make me look much younger. Dark colors, updos, anything more mature makes me actually look my age. I play around with this as needed.

Also acting your age has nothing to do with looking your age. And when it comes to being 30, acting your age means paying your bills, showing up to your job on time, taking care of responsibilities before play time, and pay your taxes. Anything else is fair game.

Life doesn't dramatically change when you hit 30 and you now have to give up everything, just like no magical moment happened when you turned 18 or 21 (or whatever your drinking age is). If anyone really thinks they need to give up everything at a certain age, they are one sorry motherfucker and I pity them.

Weight is also a big factor, it's not just about your face. You tend to look younger when you're skinnier. Being curvy doesn't make you look like a grandma, but it's a more "adult" body in most cases.

Girl in Op's picture (Maridah) has a young face for the most part, but she's pretty thick if you see her in normal clothes, and thus I feel like she does look like her age overall. As she is now, she appears proportionate to her chest size, and that's cool.

I've been dreading turning 24 and I'm the oldest in my group of friends so it gets pointed out more often then not..

Now that I have a steady job and have much more experience behind me I feel like I'm just getting started (I started in 2003 technically)

Also whenever I wear my old HS hoodie I always get asked what grade I am in..(I hate when old men come in my store and try to flirt with me! ewww!!) and the liquor store loves me so I never get carded either!!

I wouldn't mind being chubby, I don't gain weight very easily but as I am now, I look sickly, it doesn't help that I'm pale either.
I'm trying to steadily gain more weight but it's going very slowly, I've started at 45kg, now I'm 46/47 and I hope it won't go down again (my height is 5'3''-5'4'')
My goal is 50-55kg, hopefully by then I won't look like a landwhale yet but my cheeks will have filled up a bit.

I'm 28 and I've been wanting to get into cosplay since I got into anime over fifteen years ago but I never took the first step. So now I'm at a point where I'm financially successful and all that so I figure why not.

I'd like to cosplay from Sailor Moon but would that be considered too old? I also like Evangelion but I could never cosplay a pilot, even if it'd be fun - I don't think so.

I was thinking of making a list of older characters from all fandoms would help.

Evangelion
Misato
Ritsuko
Gendo
Yui
Fuyutsuki
Kaji

Sailor Moon
Setsuna
Queen Serenity
Neo Queen Serenity
Sailor Cosmos
Sailor Galaxia
I'd argue too that you could even cosplay the regular senshi but that could be a grey area.

Final Fantasy 7 and 8. Some of the characters are in their late teens and early 20's so that may work too.
Also FF with simply character classes since there aren't ages assigned to that.

Pokèmon
Gijinka maybe
Some professors
OC Trainer

DC, Marvel and American comics could work better since the characters are older but you also have to be more athletic to pull it off, just from a character to real life aspect. Could possibly cosplay some younger characters too but that's a grey area.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

>> No.6688890

Do you even Gundam? 20-30s character goldmine. Also what's more helpful is figure out the minimum age you can realistically be. Could you pass off for late teens or early 20s? Does this change if cross dressing? Don't go below your minimum visual age or you'll be less happy.

Yeah, I think there is quite the amount of little kids here who actually believe "oMG, 30's, like, so old!" and actually have no idea what real people at a certain age look like.

I was basically going with "way over 40" because I don't think you need to have just as many wrinkles as the character does, but a very young looking person cosplaying an old person with lot of drawn-on wrinkles is just as bad as an older person cosplaying a teen character.

Implying that people don't have big boobs or look remotely developed at a young age. I was a D cup by 14. FYI, girls mature faster that boys. While you're still squeaking and 4 feet tall, we're biologically able to reproduce and for the most part have reached our adult heights. Some of us physically fill out much younger, where guys tend to not look like adults until mid to late teens.

That is... unless you're equating looking young to looking prepubescent. Which yeah, you're not going to look like a 10 year old girl if you have boobs and hips, but you can certainly make a convincing like a 16 year old if you have the face for it.

>> No.6693963

>>6693913 Yeah, I think there is quite the amount of little kids here who actually believe "oMG, 30's, like, so old!"

This this this! 30 really isn't even that old. Plus by this age a person is generally more financially stable and can afford better costumes/supplies and bigger cons.
