Everybody knows that when you put unnecessary gears on everything it becomes steampunk

Challenge time, bitches.

Find me a picture of any steampunk costume that upon seeing it, you can say unequivocally "yeah that's steampunk", but does not contain any gears or cogs whatsoever.

Go go go.

Yeah agreed. I have never put together a steampunk outfit... but having been friends with people in the scene or whatever for years... I have specific tastes and it's all about the clothing to me, like, why would they be carrying around guns and goggles and shit if they were just middle class gents... maybe they have a cool pin or monocle somewhere in their coat, but there would be NO REASON for it to be out.

I really don't get the goggles thing, but the guns might be accurate depending on their world. I heard an awesome backstory about a world where dinosaurs still existed, so even upper class people carried pistols in case an outbreak happened in the city. (same would go if they had zombies, vampires, or werewolves)

But I don't understand the goggle thing. Maybe if you were a motorist or a captain?

That being said- I've had people complain that my character was too lolita and not enough steampunk- even though all of my accessories and gadgets point to my profession.

Well see the point of steampunk to me was always... Build a character and then make things revolve around that character. And by character I really mean an archytype... like a cartographer or a messenger boy, or a noble lady. And keep with the victorian/edwardian clothing, really don't stray far off from that as it's the only 'defining' feature that has a basis in reality you can draw off of. I get people saying you're too lolita if you're wearing a knee length skirt. I personally wouldn't do that, but it's your prerogative of course.

As for the gadgets... they really have to go with the character or else it's pointless and I don't understand having TONS of them... you really shouldn't need more than one big prop (if your character even has a prop... not all of them need one). As for taking it even more 'fantasy' and adding in dinosaurs and stuff... sure I guess? Just seems like an excuse to turn a candle holder into a poitless laser rifle to me /shrug
