Made some great progress on my screws. Also the first time I found a camera worth a damn.

The white 'spring' is PVC plastic that has been heated and wound around the tube. It's not perfect, but I think it will work just fine for the threads.

Shoulders are now done. I'm starting on the ab/cod section and hopfully I'll get to the knee/shin area before mega.

And now I'm going to another city just to find gold paint.... SERIOUSLY WHERE THE FUCK IS THE GOLD PAINT!?

Not alot of progress on GaoGaiGar this weekend. Going to start working on the shoulders and the lions head this week hopefully. Legs are pretty much ready for paint but the way they are set up now they will shred the foam thighs unless I change something -.- /sigh. I may just have to cut down the thighs again though I think they are already getting a bit too small...

Have not been in a very good mood and its affecting my progress.

Made a Bunnymund hoodie set for my bf to wear and be comfy while I cosplay Jack Frost.

…HAHAHAHAHHAHA, well. Hm. I actually put a lot of thought into how to make this, stumbled over a lot of mistakes, fixed tons of things, then utterly botched everything.

The ears have a weird shape. The structure for the ears is removable, but the wires in it make the ears sit too high and dig into my head, and the strap that goes under my chin to keep them up HURTS after a few minutes of wearing it. Back to the drawing board for that. I diluted a dark stone blue fabric paint, but diluting it made it more baby blue than the grey-blue I was looking for, so I think I'm going to throw it into a grey dye bath or something. And then I painted everything so poorly… by absolute chance, some places look really cool, but most look very blotchy and hideous (the back of the next especially). Plus the markings are not correct/in the right spots(though the back marking and the tail are actually almost aligned, it doesn't look like it in these pictures), and let's not even get started on that pathetic tail.

Ugh. UGHHH. I'm thinking of just scrapping it. It was a learning experience, if nothing else. I do like the pants though.

Coming along slowly,

Old photo but i've got the full jumper "patterned" (stitched on white strips of fabric to match the jumper pattern, should probably use iron-in fabric, or dye next time)

One wing finished using carved foam then painted black, but it doesn't have the nice smooth finish from the game.

Honestly, it's pretty terrible, but i'm writing it off as a learning experience.

Dear lord that is terrifying.I like the costume though. I don't see much Banjo Kazooie cosplay, and I don't think I have ever seen a Mumbo Jumbo. You should make mockups of things like that before you use your good fabric. It's also good to try sewing scraps of the material first. Especially with pleather, since any needle holes are permanent.

>> No.6669885

>>6669852
Mock-ups, as mentioned. Also, with pleather, easiest way to sew it is to use tissue paper under the feed dog so that it sews more easily. Oh. And tape. Scotch/wrapping paper tape is awesome for sewing synthetic leathers/PVC/etc. since you really can't pin it.

It has a felty inside, so my machine went through it fine. The stitches are clean, the fit is just terrible. It feels tight near the top of my thighs but then it looks like it has 1-2 inches that could come off, and bunches up like crazy in the back. And the front, for that matter. I don't have time or mney to redo it now, but in hindsight a mock-up would definitely have been smart. My bad. Next time. For now I guess I'll see what I can do with these.

Not him, but I've used polystyrene a lot for non-cosplay sculptures. You can get blocks of it at some Home Depot-type stores, but it's generally more cost-effective to get the components to mix it, then pour it into a cardboard box to mold it into a block. You sculpt it with a hotwire, which is pretty much what it says on the tin - a tool that heats up a wire so it can carve through polystyrene like a knife through butter. If you Google around, you can probably grab a hotwire and enough polystyrene mix to make multiple swords (or bits of armor, or what-have-you) for $60 or so.

>>6673754

Yeah, the rougher the sandpaper the more likely it will rip out chunks in foam I'm afraid. Not sure how deep your chunks are so you may not be able to get them all out (maybe you can fill them in later). I would suggest getting a scrap foam piece and test which size works for you. Maybe start with 150 and work your way up. Don't go past 300 for the foam it's really unnecessary. You may even want to use a fine sandpaper after you've primed, not sure what you're using but it might help even it out with you're hand painting the primer on. And because it is foam, you don't need to sand it hard, to much pressure might cause chunks to come out.

>> No.6673769

BTW, not sure where you live but where I'm from the sandpaper is labeled in the CAMI Grit designation (which is what I used in my post). In Europe they use FEPA Grit. You can see here to see the FEPA equivalent of what I recommended.

I have actually. The two reason I haven't however:
1: I haven't found a silicon that likes taking paint all very well, or at least to the same degree as the foam. No matter how much I try to smooth it out, it takes paint differently and its noticable in the finished product.
2: I found out a while back that I'm very horrible at any form of scuplting (using bondo, clay, or smoothing out joints) I swear some people are just inherently better at that kind of stuff than others or have had 10+ years in an automotive job to get that kind of skill. If I tried on this costume, I promise you it would look worse than my last.

So, I take the compromise, It looks better than my last work, which makes me happy, but it still doesn't look as good as it can, which makes me hungry to get better.

Progress is a one step at a time kinda deal I guess is what I'm saying.

indeed I was/am. I ran into the brick wall that is bondo and it is kicking my ass. So I've put it on hold untill I get a few more things under my belt. I'm practicing with bondo untill I can get a few good smooth lines and then try to tackle it again.

I love at times just taking out a costume and doing a stress test for a few hours. Since I can't really wear this thing inside my house, the best thing I can do is to wear it at places that would welcome it, a comic shop for instance. Itll alow me to see what moving will do to the armor, and what joints I need to reinforce and what extra stuff I need to do.

For instance, I'm noticing that while the cod is great, the thighs are now pulling the damn then down. So I will have to make a straping system that will go over my shoulders. Also note that the legs will be rebuild after next weekend, and will be bigger and better built.

As will the helm, not happy with that thing.

progress on emperor peony! apologies for the shitty picture, lighting in the basement is awful and its just sort of thrown onto the dressform and looks a little uneven.

this costume has been kind an exercise in making a complicated 'simple' costume. the tunic was drafted to have no shoulder seams out of a stretch suede, the undershirt has a faced neckline and the pattern on the pants wraps completely from the back to the front and meets at the inner seams, and is all stitched down.

next is to do the tunic applique and stitch everything together.

here's a more accurate progress shot of the colours, the bias tape is all made by hand so it will match the tunic applique as well. IRL the the brighter gold is also blue shot, so it reflects a little blue to clash less with the outfit than usual!

pretty much all the fabric for this costume was found in the bargain section, the velveteen was some weird stuff called 'cuddle denim'... it smelled like fish and hadn't even been unwrapped when we found it.

Most of this is actually just bent (using muscles!) and fastened in place using glue bolts or whatever I could find to make it stick (... mostly the bolt, which are permanently in there and hidden). I could have heat shaped it into place but it was a bit harder to control and evenly heat it then just using the natural curve so I ignored it. I didnt heat form any of the chest its all held to shape by tension and bolts and an inner lining of rondo (very thin) to keep the shape solid.
Essentially I like maing life hard for myself, I'd reccomend heating shaping it if you can.

The shoulder is essentially the same way but I did heat shape the inside a bit to get the outward curve.

Sorry, yes. I am making templates based on the in game 3d model (the low res one) of Imperius. I would not call it a pepakura build as the only thing that ever actually comes out of pep designer is part of the basic shape - all of the detailings and extra trim is freehanded or drawn on the computer to use as templates.

This is the full model I had to work with for the chestpiece, for example. All of the model reference bits im using are almost exclusively so I make sure to get the size right.

Thanks for possible ideas guys. Question to anyone though, would it be better to get a solid mask or stick with the zentai? I started straying away from a solid one because I was only really finding ones with eyeholes which I thought would look funny if I was having people "draw on my face". Why I'm currently sticking hopeful with the zentai/disappearing ink combo.

But its not too late for me to switch up ideas and get a different mask. If anyone wants to throw out mask ideas I'm all ears.

Thanks mannnn!

I don't do costume commissions as I don't have time between school and other life stuff, unfortunately.

But I basically used bridal satin for the gold, drew patterns for the symbols, and used a crapton of heat'n'bond to attach it all. Its still not the best since the collar especially got manhandled and there is fraying I need to go back and fix. But the heat'n'bond's glue alone was good enough to keep the front tabard's symbol from fraying since it wasn't being touched a lot. I used heavy interfacing on the collar and cuffs and 2 layers of blouse-weight interfacing on the front tabard. The epaulettes are craftfoam covered in the same bridal satin with trim from a discount fabric store hotglued on.

We had to MacGuyver the shit out of this costume to keep it all together since I ran out of time, its a looot of industrial hotglue and velcro. The collar uses hook and eyes to close, and the epaulettes and front tabard velcro underneath to stay on, while the cape is simply hotglued up underneath the collar. The glove cuffs are just velcroed on the gloves so I can dye the gloves green later on (ran out of time).

The sports bra, skirt, and (not seen) thigh high stockings were bought on ebay, I made sure they were all made of nylon and white, and then I dyed them green with Jacquard acid dye.

You could probably dilute any mistakes by spraying it with a hose. I messed up multiple times on mine, but I kept resetting the dye by letting it dry a little bit and spraying it with a hose. Basically, any impurities get blurred away as you continue to repeat the process. You also get a richer color this way, on account that you're dyeing, rinsing, and re-dying.

Just realized you said I should have done princess seams. Its my first time drafting from scratch so I was truing to keep it simple. Any tips on how to switch them?

Nice fabric choice then (just googled it). I like the different colors it has to give it more depth.

Goddammit. At least I'm formulating a plan to fix it. It will have to wait until tomorrow. I know I need to remove to second layer of parting wefts and place them the other way. Then make small pieces of hardened wig fiber from fabric glue+ water to cover the seam just so it doesn't accidentally show. Add wefts to fill in the gaps under the twin tail plus a weft to the top that will go over the part.

Of course the wefts I'm using have a 1 inch short end around the sewn line.

I feel kind of bad telling you this at this point, but really you need to cut it apart and use it as your pattern. You'll want side seams, center back seam, and princess seams. All those darts make it fit, but really what you have is a draped mockup, not something worth using as a finished shell.

Thanks! It's definitely not the most flattering costume, but god damn do I love that adorable little ball of feral child.

The fur is actually all left over from when I did Squirrel Girl back in the day. I way overbought on my fabric and it's been sitting around in my attic ever since. The cool thing is that I can reuse most of the parts of my Squirrel Girl- I just have to pin on a few more bits of fur here and there.

Decided to just remove the second double weft entirely, added a double weft up top (right underneath the skin cap), and one long double weft as close up underneath the twin tails all along the back. Still plan to cover the part seam with harden fibers and I won't know whether I'll need to fill in the sides more until I can do Asuka's side burns.

Hey /cgl/, working on my first body suit and everything's going pretty well except for my crotch. I've been messing with different things, but this is the best I've been able to get it from bunching up and hugging my vag...

A friend suggested trying a cup, but I'm wondering how well that works for, well, a girl crossplaying...

>> No.6694577

>>6694560
did you use a pattern or just trace your body and hope for the best??? either you need to have a seam up the front to account for your rise, or you have a very shallow front, no seam, and lots of extra in the back rise. And you need really stretchy 4 way stretch. That would be the correct ways to pattern that. at this point the only thing that might help is a crotch gusset.

>> No.6694588

>>6694577

Yeah I pretty much traced my body and hoped for the best.

But the crotch gusset sounds like my best chance without getting a cup. Thanks!

Added princess seams, chopped everything up, and started over. Still not perfect but its looking better. The princess seams seem way too low but I haven't tried it on with the bra i will be using yet though

What has been bugging is how you have a seam going from your bust point horizontally to your armpit/side seam. Usually you have a princess seam (which ends about 1/3 way up from the armpit/side point) or horizontal + vertical darts in a garment and it looks like you tried to combine the two together, producing an unsightly and unnatural-looking seam.

I'd go with what the other anon said and remake the top, though the chest area will be completely hidden by the breastplate if you're going to have that.

>> No.6695060

>>6694972
:/ I did remake it, but that makes sense. Probably why the arm keeps gaping like that as well. I know its going to be covered but its really bugging me that I can't get it right. Back to muslin I suppose.
Thanks for all the help everyone.

I got a bit more done. Now it's time to let the glue dry overnight, then I'll trim it up in the morning, and paint a water/glue mixture to the ends to bind it to the hair so they don't stick out.

Thankfully I found some broadcloth and can possibly get started on sideburns tomorrow.

Thaaats not a finished paint job. You need to give that baby some depth girl! Use some highlights and shading. You don't need a lot, but what you have now definitely not cutting it.

>> No.6696281

Seconded. Looks way too flat; real world lighting isn't going to do the job for you, and consider how armor like that might get dirtied up in use, get darker in the cracks and all. If not full highlights and shading, at least a little weathering.
See Kamui's armor for example. >>6686940

More updates! Got the seam hider glued down and the upper weft glued on. Thankfully the seam hider will be hidden by more hair but it looks pretty good just with the top weft. I practiced with placing Asuka interface clips in and I'm not 100% sure where I want them. They're placement is anime magic placement so it's bit hard to decide if I want them prominent or exactly like 3.0 art book shows.
