Both are great on a fairly consistent level, but people have complained about them in the past as well. And that's fine, I think- nobody's perfect after all. I just have to wonder why CGLHSG spends so much time nitpicking decent-to-amazing cosplay when it could be chuckling over the sea urchin tiers of the world. There is a whole goldmine of truly awful stuff we have yet to tap into, but it seems like most people would rather spend their time trying to find flaws in perfectly decent cosplay like >>6657904. These are my GT Jade ears, it was my first time working with any sort of fur or animal-bit-things so I think it turned out well! I got a lot of compliments, too. (I also had a tail but I don't have many pictures of that)

I used the tutorial here: http://browse.deviantart.com/art/Animal-Ears-Tutorial-212073357

I scaled it up a little bit and didn't paint them because the fur I was using was already white. I attached them by gluing them to hair clips at first but they kept getting messed up/not staying so now I just pin them directly to my wig and they stay on perfect

Forewarning you, that's a thick wig and as such will take longer to carefully cut bangs into, but it's a really good one!
I'd also recommend trimming the back so you don't have the last couple wefts sticking down the back of your shirt.

Anyway, go slow and cut it with your scissors pointing vertical to avoid blunt cuts.
I'd also highly recommend getting a straight razor (http://arda-wigs.com/products/razor-comb-razor-blades)) and cutting with that as it helps thin the edges as you cut.

How do black and white tights for Jade's god tier compare to the more greyish ones she wears in canon? I see a lot of Jade cosplayers wear them and I think they channel the witch references nicely, but I'm not entirely sold.

I kind of want to try to get decent pictures of my Jade since I haven't really but I was proud of myself for actually finding grey and black tights with little sparkles in them so they were like stars.

But yeah, I have seen a lot of the black and white and they look good on some. like people who make her outfit completely black but when it's the lighter grey with black tunic the grey and black stockings look much better.

Hey guys

I'm planning a Eridan cosplay (!!!!) and I'm wondering if anybody had any advice? I'm a fairly experienced cosplayer by now (I think I'm going on 4+ years or something now, wow ahaha) but I'm always SO nervous about falling into common traps, especially on characters like Eridan that have that simple-complexity that makes so many people get SO CLOSE but still end up looking like an amateur, if not total poop.

I think my biggest hurdle is going to be the teeth and wig- I've done seadweller fins before, I've already completed the horns (although I still need to figure out how to attach them), and I'm a pretty decent seamster (tailor? Is there even a male form of seamtress?). I was thinking of getting Lucius from Dental Distortions, but my inner cheapskate is yelling "NO" and crying softly since I also know of a very good shark-grell-type teeth tutorial (mind you, it wouldn't look as good, but it would be SO much cheaper). With the wig I have pretty much no idea, but I know a couple of really good Eridans (most notably one that keeps getting posted on here), so I was going to ask them for advice as I searched (cried over) and checked cosplay blogs and the like.

Any tips or tricks? Common mistakes to avoid? Something you wish more Eridans would do?

Personal opinion, but I don't teeth are that important unless you're planning on taking a lot of open mouthed shots. It's not worth the way they make your face look puffy and lips awkward.

The ideal Eridan wig would be a lace front with the purple streak ventilated in properly, but I've never seen anyone try it.

-don't pin the purple part up/stick it under the horn band. also make sure it's the right shade

(-if you want it to be really good get a lacefront wig, the hairline is super hard to get right)

-style the sideburns

-if the horns are on a headband, wear it UNDER the wig

-if you paint the stripes on the pants make sure they're even and clean

-pay attention to your contouring. at least according to some of the talk sprites he has almond shaped eyes and cleft chin. he also has dark lips but do it with dark gray eye shadow and make sure the lines are blended to avoid the eye liner-as-lip liner -look

-make the horns sit like his do. not tho the sides, not up.

-get a knit scarf, not one of those crappy mf-style fleece abominations

-wear accurate shoes

-if you're a girl with wide hips and no shoulder definition, wear spanx and make sure the pants and shirt are male cut/add slim shoulder pads etc

-make sure that the cape sits correctly and that the lining and hemming are neat

-if you're making an ahab's, make sure it's not lumpy

-don't act like a wweh wweh nyeh bucket bucket quadrant moron

hey guys, wondering if i could fish for some ideas. i was talking to my dad and he expressed some interest in doing some homestuck cosplay with me- after thinking it over we decided on the grand highblood, since for some reason i've always imagined GHB as a grizzly scary old dude (my dad's 57 and pretty much fits that description). i definitely want to put a lot of effort into this thing because i think it'll look pretty good if i manage to get it right, so i thought i'd ask you guys. what do you like seeing in GHBs? which parts of his design do you think should be emphasized and which parts are the most important to get right?

so far i've been thinking to use lots of leatherlike materials and generally take inspiration from the whole grungey old 80s rocker look. i don't want to go with the bare arms interpretation since my dad's got some big tattoos so i think the only skin we'd have showing is on his face. other than that, i'm still waffling on ideas.

any suggestions, HSG? is a tough-old-dude GHB yay or nay?

I think a few threads ago someone started a prop discussion. Has anyone made Dave's timetables while actually paying attention to their proper thickness? I think it's popular to use posterboard (which is completely inappropriate as far as canon goes) or even foamcore, but that still doesn't look sturdy enough imo.

i'd probably bring him to a local con for only one day or so. i think that'd be his limit haha. i plan to fix up my redglare so i can make the most out of it with a photoshoot at least.

I got mine to pretty much exactly how it looks in canon. I used insulation foam board (I think it was 1.5 inch?? Maybe bigger) in one piece for the main body of it, and make the spokes by cutting out the spoke shape and then cutting the thickness of that in half so that the teeth were half the thickness of the body. So my other-half directed me here in search of Hussie's original art on Karkat's Knight of Blood and Dave's Knight of Time outfits.
My intent is to cosplay a Knight of Space in about 4 months (plenty of time) and I need source material to figure whats cannon and how I can manipulate it to be aesthetically pleasing and craftable.

I'm making old-school witch inspired jade this year, so obviously I need to wear a witch hat, but everything I find is just so hokey? Quick question, this talk about the girl above got me to remember something. I wanted to cosplay a Militarystuck Rose, however most people hate Mookie's militarystuck, and I honestly think myself that only Aranea and Jade's design is good (not for the military aspect though, just I personally like the design).

Should I make my own, and if I do, is there a certain military uniform style I should follow after? ( Russian Imperial Army, French Napoleonic Wars Uniform, etc)

im glad the homestuck community is so creative and does a ton of shit out of the canon and continuity to do something that looks interesting and ends up being executed well

but shit like Militarystuck, genderbendstuck, policestuck, etc is really fucking stupid

at that point you're not even a cosplaying a character from a show. you're cosplaying your own design, and you can do that all you'd like, but when you go to a convention, people like to guess who you are. If you need to fucking explain to everyone it's your interpretation of character somebody ALREADY IS familiar with, then what was the effort really worth? The Homestuck characters are ambiguously designed as is and a standard Alpha Dave can have numerous iterations of how it could be cosplayed.

Sorry for being useless and being negative but I wanted to rant. Please continue.

I get what they are going for, but it doesn't make any sense if you think about it.
Antlers are different than horns in that the velvet is only there while the horns are growing to feed the antlers nutrients and vitamins for the bone underneath. Once they are done growing, the velvet sheds and the antlers are done growing until they fall off after mating season when the cycle starts again.

Anyways back on topic, we are talking about fictional alien beings so if they really wanted to do it, it could possibly look okay if they blended the colors well? Also depends on their overall horn construction. I guess we'll see if they go through with it.
