What do you think of this kind of cosplay?
To me, it is the ultimate cosplay, because that's as close as you can get. And also, you can crossdress easier if you are a man.

AGREED.

I can't understand how anyone in the cosplay community would be into this. This doesn't allow for any sort of range of expression, reality or humanism. It is widely known as a fetish far more than a legit cosplay practice and cosplayers who rely on this aren't really cosplayers, just emotionless mannequins.

Always the same over exaggerated expression on the face, basically it's a doll head someone is wearing. Like the type of thing you'd have watched in an episode of Goosebumps as a kid, it doesn't change, it just stares.

For me it's those masks... like I get the concept but it just hits a very weird uncanny valley for me. It's something about the eyes and the never changing expression ever. I always saw cosplay as making a character come to life, almost like if you wer designing the costumes for a live action adaptation and you wanted them to still be as accurate as possible but still human.

These are like figmas that got too big for their stands and are now gallivanting around and like a lot of figurines that face expression aint changing. It will be smiling over my corpse as it stabs me to death to alleviate me of these kawaii nightmares.

Though I get why some folks can like them for me it's just yeah no. Which is kind of funny since I actually love figurines and dolls and have a fairly large collection, and I cant usually grasp why my dolls freak out others, but some how this push's my border.

Why are they not real cosplayers? Because they cosplay in a way that you don't like even though they invest a lot in the detailing with most of the masks costing at $800+? If you even bothered looking at the pictures in the thread, you'd note how accurate most of the cosplays are.

I own a shitton of old porcelain dolls (my grandmother used to make/collect them, I inherited her collection) that I absolutely love, but keep hidden away in a separate room so they don't freak out visitors. Or sometimes specifically freak out visiting kids when they snoop around without permission. But I digress.
They don't scare me. They're bits of porcelain and fabric, shaped to look like fat little cross-eyed children. Like you, I can't really grasp why some people seem so terrified of them. They just sit there, being ornamental.

But if one of them were human-sized and started moving around, you can bet I would scream like a little girl and smash its head in with a hockey stick, priceless antique or not. The not-moving thing is a pretty big part of the deal, here. Break that and it's the stick for them.

>> No.6656655

>>6656623
Yeah I actually plan to keep my dolls hidden away when I have my own place (well I do have my own place but it's a very small flat so they are in storage), keep them out of site to not freak out visitors but I'll let them scare the jesus out of any visiting children that go sneaking around where they arent supposed to. Though actually I think a room full of kigurumi masks staring at you would creep out nosy kids better than dolls... hmmm.

I think the moving is a huge part of it. I can deal with faces that dont change expression on a doll because that's it, they are a doll. Nothing else is moving or changing about them why should the faces? But if it's moving around like a human and that one vital aspect of human expression isnt changing then yeah I'm creeped out. I dont really care who is inside it it's just freaky to me. The fact that most people dont talk while in those as well. I keep imagining this silent alive doll thing running after me with a meat cleaver.

I just hope there are no higurashi kigurumi's, or my night mares may actually be way closer to reality.

So yeah, you don't really explain why you don't think it's cosplay, just that it takes away from the costume because of the mask. If I go down that road, then people who are ugly or fat can't be cosplaying because they're taking away from the quality of the cosplay with one aspect.
>Cosplay (コスプレ kosupure?), short for "costume play", is a type of performance art in which participants wear costumes and accessories to represent a specific character or idea.
So yeah, you just don't want it to be cosplay because it creeps you out. It's fine to think that it's creepy, but to say it doesn't match the definition of cosplay (which it clearly does btw) just because you don't like it is just wrong (not in a moral sense, but in the sense of you're misdefining the word).

I don't like it; it takes away the fun of you "being" the character, albeit for a very little bit. Plus, the lack of expression takes away whatever realism the mask might have added. Finally, it just makes your other human flaws (i.e. birthmarks, pores, uneven skintone) stand out more against a silly mask.

No this really only applies to the mask. You cant make accurate expressions if no one can see them. I mean sure you have one very very accurate expression (assuming it's a good mask) but you dont get to react to anything. You have that same smiling face to every thing, no versatility in photos either. Characters dont respond to every situation the exact same. You really basically just take the same picture over and over again but you might just change your body position a bit sometimes.

Yeah and those peoples photos get boring to see after a while too.
I wasnt referring to RP I was more or less referring to just photos specifically since that's the one place every one tries to be in character at least a bit. I know I'd ry to express a different emotion if say some one was getting a photo of me and my characters mortal enemy than I would if it was me and my characters romantic interest.

And while i dont doubt some have different masks you'd 1, have to carry them with you, 2, it would take more of an ordeal to change them out (as I assume you'd have to take off the wig too as well as the face and put them both back on again) than it would be just changing the way you smile. While that could work for a photo shoot I havent seen it done (granted I dont go looking for these pictures) and it's certainly not ideal for a con setting.

I don't care about facial expressions personally because I'm probably only going to look at one or two pictures of a cosplay at a con before moving onto the next. Just me though, if you think it's boring I guess you look at a lot of the same pictures of the same cosplayer.

>> No.6658074

>>6658011

No, because a wig does not hinder your facial expressions. In fact, they can actually look natural. They help create a sense of "realism" that contributes to the costume, whereas a mask negates that completely, by taking away expression and, like I said, bringing other, human flaws to attention, such as uneven skintones. Also, these masks and human skin just do not have the same kind of shine. And when the person/character tries to cover themselves in cloth, it just looks bad.

Yes, but those still look bad. It's almost impossible not to have fabric wrinkling, etc. Also, even if it didn't wrinkle, it would still look bad because the lustre of the mask is so at odds with that of the cloth, which actually prevents shine, in contrast to the plastic mask. >>6657908

Saying that the point of a wig is to look natural is disingenuous. I wear natural-looking wigs, and I have some cosplay wigs. They're not for the same purpose. .... your really gungho about these Kigu things arent you?

Well then all power to them I guess? I mean it's their choice to spend a lot of money on a mask for one expression for the whole day in a cosplay that isnt going to be appreciated as much. Though one thing here:
>What if the point of cosplay isn't to make interesting photos for these people?

For some one who has been going on about the point of cosplay and personal preference in cosplay then what if the point of cosplay for others is to have satisfying photo's after words? Well in that case my guess is Kigu probably wouldnt be their cup of tea. Where as if your dead set on looking like a figma come to life then I guess this is the way to go. It really all does come down to personal preference and I'm not saying that they shouldnt do it, I'm saying I personally cant outway the cons that I see for it, and I dont think I know any cosplayers personally who would either.

It's obvios your pretty passionate about these but I may suggest you keep threads like these to /jp/ if you dont want to go back and forth with others on if they are creepy or a good idea or not. Popular opinion around here isnt really along that train of thought. Enjoy your thread by all means but this isnt the right board for it if you just want to talk about how cool this or that mask is and enjoy the pictures with others.

Yeah and I use natural looking wigs for cosplay to. The advantage over wigs is generally that they are a, thicker and b, the right color. Even the craziest of styles still resemble human hair in some way shape or form and not the colorful blogs they are on the anime or the solid piece of plastic on the figma. I've seen better at Japanese furcons. These all look like cardboard cutouts. It clashes with the human body/real materials. Regardless of why you cosplay, I can honestly say the majority of these masks clash, and do not look good in real life. In photos, they're either really good or exceedingly crappy, depending on if they used flesh-like finish on the mask, and had a perfectly matching, barely-shiny bodysuit. In addition to that, they look absolutely terrible on people who are not skinny. You'd have to super-size the head to make the cartoon face make a normal body look cartoony. And you have to have the proportions (Big eyes, thin nose, small lips) built into the mask line up roughly where we recognize these features to be. In nearly every mask, the nose was too pointy to the extent of looking unrecognizable, and the mouth was far too low/no chin or jaw. That makes the mouth look almost like it's melting off the face. Obviously, the majority who make this have little understanding on how to make them less creepy. Not all necessarily, but damn some of this look shitty..

I have seen more realistic ones that were still stylized, but not retarded. Just googled and can't find the exact image I'm thinking of, but here's something similar:

http://content.foto.mail.ru/mail/hikarinaka/Partyshots/s-1466.jpg

Looks less cheezy and is just picnicking in uncanny valley rather than throwing an unbirthday. Still, I think the average face looks better than the average mask. That might just come down to how much work and money it would take to not look shitty in one.

Tl;dr - Still cosplay, but much harder to pull off/money not worth the results.

Kigurumi is creepy because of the frozen facial expression.

Anime characters do not walk around with one expression frozen on their face at all times.

Here is the logic: It is a suit, not a costume. :|

And just so you know, it seems like you're the one crying about it it. Whining whiner.

But a mascot suit is just a costume and even if not, kigurumi pajamas aren't costumes and are still considered cosplay.

This is my attitude too. Motionless and Emotionless faces are scary. If an ACTUAL PERSONS FACE was constantly staring straight ahead and smiling, it'd be about as freaky.

Get the technology good enough that the eyes move and the mood changes, and it'll be less scary.

The concept of it being an old dude in there doesn't bug me that much, as long as the old dude in question isn't lecherous or a creep.

I'm not the OP, but I did contribute a number of the images to the thread. Honestly, I've seen a few of these threads on /cgl/ not derail into almost every post being
>omg, creepy

Glad that the thread's made someone a little happier. :)

I'm kind of interested in trying a guide I found so I can make my own mask. It's fairly detailed and looks like it should make a mask, but I don't think my skill level is high enough to attempt it yet.

That's one place I know to get them domestically. Rates are as follows:
>Mask alone: $849
>Mask with HQ bodysuit: $1016
>Mask with normal bodysuit: $923
It's pretty expensive, so you should probably trying making one on your own if you have the expertise and time.
