Britfag thread Mark IV
Anyone got pictures from LSCC?

>> No.6652745

Not LSCC related but brit fag cosplay related.
This is going to sound incredibly new but any one know good fabric stores in London? I'm still adjusting to living here and now feeling set up enough to get back into cosplay. And I miss my Joann's so badly already since searching for shit in london is hard. You either get the really crappy shit by you or the super high end store on oxford that for some reason only sell vintage or floral pattern.

Any help would be super appreciated, especially looking for any place that would have a good selection of fleeces? Until then back to searching I go.

Hey, britfags - are there any groups not filled with weeaboos in the Gloucestershire area? Used to live there, now one of my friends over there has got into cosplay and she can't find any cosplayers who aren't weeaboos, apparently.

>> No.6653476

Yeah I have some pictures, not loads though. I'll post later.

So who's going to CICAE?

>> No.6653509

Goldhawk Road or Shepherd's Bush market for fabric shopping in London.

>> No.6653633

>>6652745
I believe Shepherd's Bush and Brick Lane. There's also Berwick Street, but that's quite high-end and expensive. Costume students that I've spoken to in London get their samples from Berwick Street, and then go to Shepherd's Bush to find a cheaper version for the actual fabric.

If you're looking to go really cheap, there's a fabric land in Kingston.

Goldhawk road, forever gold hawk road. Tooting broadway markets have a couple of cheap places, too - but so cheap that the quality can be questionable, but good for linings

Anyone know good places for trimmings? Been living here 6 months now and still not found anywhere!

>> No.6656789

I have a question - are there any good photoshoot locations in England? Specifically things like period houses, involving stuff like pillars and the like.

Most of the NT houses ask you to pay a fee, which honestly I just can't afford. Keele Hall looks pretty good from what I've seen of Amecon.

I'll provide one, though. If you're doing anything Tudor (so I guess Trinity Blood, Romeo et Juliet, maybe even Chevilier D'eon) then Hall's Croft, Stratford-Upon-Avon, are quite lenient with letting people photograph there. (Especially if you say it's for a school project, so you could always pretend to be attending college there or some such).
Shoots would be mostly outside though, since the furniture etc inside is delicate, and you'd want to ring up beforehand.

Here's my fabric shop copypaste:

Okay these are the ones I personally visit and regard as the cheapest/best value but there are a lot more:
>Berwick Street
This is the main stretch of fabric shops and are great for samples but not for actually buying the material unless there's something specific you are after. The majority only do samples at certain times and if the shop isn't too crowded - you'll generally be limited to 3-4 a person. I advise you visit alone if you're sampling because some of the shops get moody (especially Cloth House and The Berwick Street Cloth Shop). The only place with good value fabric in general is Borovick Fabrics but prepare to engage in some banter with the guys who work there, they have a 10% student discount as well.
There are loads of wholesale jewellers and trimming suppliers but some aren't open to the public. Again there's only one that in my opinion is affordable and it's called New Trimming's (Noel Street, Left turning as you walk down Berwick Street) it's run by this little Chinese lady and most of her stuff is from taobao but the reselling price isn't terribly extortionate so it's good for when you need things quickly!

>Goldhawk Road
CHEAP FABRIC EVERYWHERE ALL SORTS ALL KINDS EVERYWHERE
Go to Goldhawk Station and turn right as you leave, fabric shops are on both your left and right- average price is ~」4p/m for most fabrics
A-One fabrics also has a haberdashery up the stairs which is well priced.
The only thing about Goldhawk Road is that the shop owners can be really creepy so go with a friend or two because it can be uncomfortable
Shepherds Bush Market is on your left as well (you can't miss the sign) and it's great for haberdashery and bridal related trimmings etc. There's also some fabric stalls but they aren't that great.

>Ilford Lane
It's just on the outskirts of London and is a bit of a journey if you're not local but it's really good for cheap cheap fabrics (some are like £1 p/m)
Ilford Lane is seriously long but you get to a point where the fabric shops start to thin out and you can turn back.
You can try and haggle with some of the shittier shops (aka the ones that don't look slick and modern) but this will have varying effects depending on who you are
There is an A* trimmings shop called Braids n Buttons (Bedford Road, on your left as you walk down Ilford Lane) it's actually heaven and filled with laces, baids etc. in pretty much every colour under the sun! They have cheap general haberdashery bits as well like machine needles and oil. They different weights of fusible interfacing for like £1 p/m as well

I might go sampling tomorrow so i'll see if there are any good deals on fleece fabrics about

I'm based in Manchester and there a few places you could use for photo shoots. One place you don't want to go despite all the pretty is Trafford Centre. They can be really strict about photography.

Quite a few other cities in the North have some great locations. One of my friends lives in Lancaster and she has seen some great photos there. Pic related, its Ashton Memorial in Lancaster.

Oh thanks anon! Useful thread.

This has some good suggestions but it says things like 'last time I checked you were allowed to take photos outside' etc. I'm just worried because if you go in with a cosplay that just looks like weird kids in weird clothes, it might be okay, but something like a large ball-gown or heavy artwork outfit would make it obvious you were a photographer and model, and might incur film fees. Especially in places like Chatsworth House.

I guess all you can do is ask. Maybe they don't mind if it's non-profit and for art purposes.

I would absolutely love to shoot in some of the places listed here though.

Keats House is a lovely period house in London, although you have to pay a fee of £5 to visit. But it's valid for a whole year, I think? I'm not sure how it works, though I've been there several times for a workshop, but it was free. MCM Tickets are easy to get. The early entry ones can run out but to be honest I bought an early one and still had to queue for ages. It just lets you queue earlier, not skip the queue or anything.
So it's easy to buy them just before or on the day.

I don't think the masq is going to be worth it - with 700 guests they only had 20 spaces for the masq which were given on first come first serve so I bet theres a lot of crap in it

>> No.6714496

It's not even cash prizes. All the entrants got some shitty e-mail saying 'It is imperative that all contestants are present at the time of announcing failure to show for an award without a good enough reason is bad manners and would lead to disqualification from the contest. A lot of hard work has been put in to the organization of this and all we ask if that you stay unti the end and not just turn up for the contest and expect us to send out a prize in the mail.'

While also saying the 'cash prize' will be sent by bank transfer. Honestly it just seems like a stunt to get cosplayers to the event and to stay there. I know several people who thought about entering but because the prize giving was on Sunday, and they basically said if you don't stay for the closing ceremony we'll disqualify you, that they couldn't travel back in time.

Besides where do they get £3500 for a cosplay competition? I've seen better conventions with not nearly so much to spare.

According to a "friend of a friend" the con's funded almost 100% via ticket sales and the con organisers anime merch website (which apparently made fuck all money last year).

If the cosplay comp's rigged, I bet it's a tax scam. The guy running the con is supposed to be a bit dodgy.

sunnycon's prize is because sunderland council funds the event, and rather than spending the cash on the event, they've given it to people as a prize.

I never did for Ame, Aya or MCM and tbh I feel something like this rests in the hands of the organisers as they need to check any entrants beforehand which is kind of impossible to do.

This. And some part also needs to fall on the organisers. The masq entries were all signed up before the con right? >> No.6719685

I think it is up to the contestants to read the rules. The organisers then need to enforce it otherwise what's the point in making rules public. It takes no time at all to check through rules. Organisers don't have the time to check through 40+ contestants. Certainly not at bigger events. I certainly would check the rules myself.

I do think for a cash prize rules needed to be enforced and pre-judging should have happened.

Especially if a winning costume then goes on to break those rules.

Nope

I was a contestant. There was no pre judging because the organisers didn't arrange one. I asked if there would be a post-judging and was told there would be, on the Sunday, and to come to the cosplay coordinator to arrange a time. This was then CANCELLED because they LOST A JUDGE. As in they just couldn't work out where she was, and by the time she turned up it was too late. So there was also no post judging either. The only time the full panel of judges got to see the costumes at all was the 5-10 seconds they were on stage in front of them, or if they happened to be hanging around the queue (which at least one was, because she ended up actually organising the masquerade for them). We certainly didn't get to sit down with the judges and go through our scrapbooks or talk over the costumes with them, we were never even officially introduced to them. We were told the judges might "ask to see stuff" on the sunday, but a) they didn't and b) trying to just randomly find a specific person at a 1000 person open event if just silly, you have to arrange appointments and actually organise things.

We didn't get our music because the organisers messed up again, they had told contestants to either bring their own music or request stuff they would then "try to find", and when they didn't find the music for everyone, they didn't use ANY of the music, even the stuff that people had brought themselves. Some of this was possibly also down to the poor organisation, they may have wanted to use our music then not had time to arrange it. I know at least one girl had a specific performance planned out to her song as she was in a costume from a music game, and she never got to do that, either on stage or in front of the judges in private.

There was also at least one pair who turned up to the pre masquerade gathering (which was 30 minutes before the masq was due to start), and somehow got the impression that the masquerade wasn't on, and didn't get to participate at all.

It's a shame SunnyCon has gone down so badly. The whole event was badly organised, and the cosplay comp was a shambles. The judges did a great job with what little help they must've had. The organisers behind the event were appalling, and as far as I could see there was no planning at all. There were multiple shoutouts (mostly wrong, then corrected later) regarding cosplay entries, giving wrong times, locations, information etc. No wonder people were confused. I could barely piece it together and I wasn't even entering, and there were so few staff and volunteers around you couldn't even ASK for any help.

There was meant to be a prejudging but no time slot was allocated, and when they "organised" one last minute (via email I believe) nobody was told WHERE to meet so it fell through. Because of this the judges had next to nothing to work off aside from on-stage presence and what little time they had to speak to the entrants in their own time as far as I could tell.

It's a shame the winner will be disqualified but I do worry it's a genuine mistake since the "no other competitions" rule is VERY low on the list of rules on SunnyCon's website. For being such an important rule, you'd think it'd have been advertised more predominantly, not second from the bottom. All in all the event was an absolute joke, considering it was meant to be an esteemed cosplay award.

>> No.6720805

>>6720795

The list was only ten rules long, if you can't cope with 10 bullet points you probably shouldn't be allowed out on your own. I don't know how long that rule was there but it was certainly a decent amount of time, we were planning our costumes for several months based on that rule. If I'd have known it would just be ignored I'd have dug out one of my old heavy hitters, as would a ton of my friends, so I sincerely hope the £500 third prize goes to a new competitor and the current second and third are bumped accordingly.

Sunnycon was a mess.

No security, EVEN in the morning for dealers to set up. Noone at the door checking badges on both days.

Their frontmen on both days were cringeworthy. On saturday it was a guy preaching to under 16s about 4chan, bronies (this is a like looking at least about 30-40 y/o), and internet references that are so fucking old you can only sit back and cringe.

For a convention advertising japenese culture ('Come a long and immerse yourself in fascinating Japanese tradition.') their DJ was something you would expect from a wedding, or a cheap birthday party at a community centre. Playing shit like gangham style, harlem shake, pitbull and carameldansen REPEATEDLY was horrid. Additionally, due to the sound levels, the actual speakers during the event were subject to be drowned out by this horrible shit. The ones that actually knew what they were talking about and that people were genuinely finding interesting.

The cosplay competetion was changed at last minute I heard. They announced the competition on the sunday, then didn't tell anyone that it was changed to the saturday. There was a supposed pre-judging to take place, in the form of a HALF HOUR slot before the contest. The judges complained that it was not nearly long enough, so they decided to change it to a post judging on sunday, where the contestants could go in wearing or just presenting their cosplay in a room with the panel.

The contest itself was bullshit. I'm only going to cover the admin side of it, but the announcer was awkward as fuck, and they clearly didn't have a set routine for the contestants until about 3 or 4 people in. Every so often, the announcer would consistently break immersion by jumping in during "performances" and get the cosplayers to speak about their costume. Not to mention that the guy couldn't pronounce the majority of cosplays/cosplayers and even read out some of them completely and embarassingly wrong.

Ctd.

>> No.6721584

>>6721563
Ctd.

There was a point where one of the contestents corrected him on what she was cosplaying, and they guy retorted with "Well it says this on the sheet" twice as if it was her fault their admin was piss poor.

At the end of the performances, the announcer even told the audience that the results would be done today. All the judges shook their heads at him to signal that he should redact that, but he was as fucking oblivious as a rock. They never announced when they were actally going to give the results to non contestants.

The events were bullshit. Once again, openly advertising yaoi and yuri events in a convention full of underaged kids was such a fucking smart move.

On sunday, the raffle was appauling. it just seemed like a way to give second hand cosplay gear to the masses, claiming them as awesome prizes. Nope. Shite.

It's clear that their target audience is the younger generation, but they're basically bringing them up to turn them into shitty weebs. This may be their second convention, but they've had a year to prepare. Even their website is shit. I find it a joke that they use tucky's payment gateway to purchase the tickets. He may be the top guy but holy fuck show some professionalism. This was definately not worth £25. The only thing going for them were their special guests and, even then, their shitty con booklet didn't actually give credit to all the guests who attended.

Honestly I feel dirty for attending, and I feel sorry for the people at that con who actually put hard work into preparing, because the overall structure of it was non-existent.

>> No.6721593

Yes. Vic complained and was moved to a better hotel.

Also, correct. Ginny did lose her luggage. She had to buy new clothes for the convention.

Also just to add the highly professional moment when the announcer told two of the entrants to "turn around and get off the stage" without realising the mic was still in range so it would be heard. The whole thing was cringeworthy and terribly put together, he needs to be fucking sacked.

>I find it a joke that they use tucky's payment gateway to purchase the tickets. He may be the top guy but holy fuck show some professionalism.
Tucky and professionalism do not go together. His whole business aim and purpose for running his store and con seems to be to pimp himself up as some sort of UK anime industry player. He's a joke as far as anime dealers go and it's not surprising his con's fucked up in its second year.

It's OK, there wasn't. Some of us asked for one and were told there would be one, but it never happened.

fetlife is a fetish website and non suprisingly you aren't allowed to upload photos of people who have not given their consent for you to do so
adding captions like "I wanted to violate this girl so bad" to photos of strangers is a whole new level of autism that we won't get into here

Think of it as a watch list for creepers.

Here's the UK anime group. I know I've seen a fair few of the people in it at cons before.

>SunnyCon is proof that anime events don’t have to take place in the likes of London and Manchester to be a success. People are genuinely interested in seeing what the city has to offer and this event will do a great deal to enhance the city’s reputation as a leading place for software and technology.
What has software and technology got to do with people running around in cosplay and listening to VAs?

Probably because it got some funding off the council under the guise of promoting Sunderland for tourism.

The actual con was so and so. It was aimed more towards the youngsters and relied a lot on the guests to make or break the time.

The DJ they had was horrendous as was the PA, the organisation of the contests was poor but all in all at the end of the day it wasn't too bad at all.

The whole top and bottom of it was just meeting up with some friends, having a laugh and trying not to freeze to death. for £25 though? Well it was a bit much but it wasn't the absolute worst.

Fuck off, as a member of staff I can tell you we took the guests out for at least 2 evening meals and paid for all their food. Ginnys luggage was lost on the first day and we reimbursed her on the two outfits she bought saturday morning. Also vic was only moved because the hotel room he was in had broken heating and we werent made aware of this till just as he arrived.

Responding to someone who's being critical by telling them to fuck off is a really good way to represent your convention.

Noice. Didn't see the bit about the prize sponsor. Anyone know which company it was out of interest?

Haha, oh fuck I managed to delete my own post - meant to do that on a /co/ thread.

I'm repeat it:
