ATTN: new Otakon?

in VEGAS BABY.

Anyone think they're gonna go? Just booked my hotel room. I've always wanted to go to Vegas, so... I'm really hoping to make it to this.

brofist! Magfest is one of the greatest things ever and Otakon can suck a dick.

I think Mag is still throwing around the idea of having a summer event one day.

>> No.6643782

What a terrible idea. Vegas can barely even support its homegrown cons, what do they think this'll do?

>> No.6643787

I would be willing to give it a shot. If the con is awesome, anime con and Vegas. If it blows, there's still Vegas. I'm considering it since that's plenty of time to plan expenses.

>> No.6643838

Otakon Vegas? Count me the fuck in.

Now I can fuck me some cosplay prostitutes, preferably Scanty and Kneesocks.

Maybe Otakon can hire out real burlesque ladies instead of the what the fuck broads you see in "cosplay burlesque"

>> No.6643959

The convention is close to Anime Los Angeles, but I am sure that they can get lots of SoCal cosplayers with lots of buzz. The question is whether the venue is good for cosplay.

>> No.6643996

Initially, the thought of this con just seemed like a trainwreck, but actually, maybe its location would attract older con goers? It could work? Sure some local youngsters would attend, but I bet more older people would be willing to fly in. If people were capable of behaving themselves, it could yield some awesome casino photoshoots and some nice 18/21+ content. Hell, it'd be pretty sweet to sit down for black jack at a table full of cosplayers and con goers.

That would my ideal, optimistic thought, anyways.

>> No.6643999

I want to go. I want to go and I want to see Kaiji and Akagi cosplays everywhere.

>> No.6644005

>>6643996
I think the idea of this con would only work if it was 18/21+ though.. If that's the appeal of it, then having kids around would just make it difficult to bring that focus in.

>> No.6644012

I'm in. Anime Vegas and Animegacon are total shit so I'm more than willing to give this one a try since it's being run by an experienced organization. Hopefully, this will be a good local con. If not... there's always Cali.

Better Chicago to Vegas than Eastcoast to Vegas, though.

I wonder what they think their main eastcoaster base is going to do, or are they just trying to break into the westcoast market? That's what I assumed, but this might be bad blood for westcoast cons..

>> No.6644148

I'm all for it. There needs to be more animu cons in Vegas.

Although I don't think it will attract as many attendees since like 30% of Otakon is under 21. Not much fun going to Vegas if you're underage.

>> No.6644151

>>6644141
There is already enough bad blood with the West Coast cons. Anime Expo has bad blood with AM2 and PMX. Anime Conji has bad blood within itself. Otakon has a generally good working relationship with most of these conventions, which probably explains why they did the convention in Nevada, not California, so they don't step over the toes of the California cons while moving westward.

That's what I was thinking is a problem, though. If they have a good relationship with these cons, but are now infringing on a timeperiod where there's a couple westcoast cons (especially with ALA), I can't imagine they wouldn't be a little miffed by this movie?

>>6644261
>>6644273
You can still cosplay, can still take photos, just don't get caught by a pitboss or a manager on a bad day. I've taken photos inside casinos of other people no problem. The cocktail waitresses don't really care. Everyone kind of expects a whole "oh em gee Vegas let's have fun!" attitude and atmosphere so they aren't going to get on your ass immediately unless you're being obnoxiously loud or annoying to other patrons. I'd probably skip using a flash since that'll bring more attention to you.

Now if you're not at the machines then knock yourself out. You'll see wedding guys running around with light stands and gear from time to time, especially during wedding season, and no one gives a fuck. People expect tourists to take photos.

There's a shitload of casinos so if you do have to push the envelope and manage to get kicked out of one, well, there's always another twenty to also get kicked out of. "Don't get caught" is a better idea overall.

Alright I guess I'll throw in how I feel about this since I live in vegas.
Vegas is a horrible place to throw an anime convention. The venues are expensive on the strip and this one is right on it. So I wonder how they are going to make up for it in badge prices.
Also vegas is not friendly to 21 and under, they aren't even supposed to be in the casino without an adult and they have to stay on the carpet path. Also you have to be 21 to get a room anywhere near there. Masks are also a no go at all and security will act before they ask questions and people who have never been to vegas especially younger kids won't know all the rules there are in a casino.
PH is a BIG casino with the pleasure pit downstairs and the peepshow upstairs so I won't be surprised if people get lost looking for the convention center part of it. It's also connected to the miracle mile shops which can be confusing . It's a long walk to even get to PH through it.
Personally I don't feel comfortable having conventions in these big casinos because of all the "normies" These girls dressing in some of the more revealing outfits will be harassed by drunk tourists. (this is kind of an everyday thing though here in vegas)
I wish they would take advantage of our actual convention center here.
Anyways I hope to see you all here and I hope you have fun visiting.

>So I wonder how they are going to make up for it in badge prices.
in b4 increasing Otakon badge prices again

Anyway your comment about sums up my own concerns with this convention. I don't think this is a very well thought-out plan on their part, but if it does succeed it will be interesting to see how they handled these problems, especially problems related to the younger crowd. They should have just made it an adult-only event.

I'll second you on the below 21 stuff. I couldn't even stand at the counter of one of the club card places while my dad was getting a replacement card (back before legal age). PH is pretty big but I've always found it beneficial to ask where stuff is. I've only been to one convention in PH and it's the area in the Mezzanine, right? Fairly easy to locate, thankfully.

LVCC probably costs a ton more so I don't see small conventions that don't have a lot of funding getting in there.

They really take it seriously and I hope people understand that.

I booked my hotel today. I've always wanted to visit Vegas, not sure if I'll actually go, but no harm done if I end up cancelling. Hotel with the Otakon block rate was only $109/night, $126 with taxes I believe. Since I'll be going to Ota/Baltimore as well, badges are only $25 for the weekend. The real wallet-breaker is the flight, from NYC I'm looking at somewhere around $400.. but I've seen a lot of 'deals' for flights to Vegas, so I'm hping I can knock that down to ~200. Basically, with 3 other people, I believe I'm looking at paying under $500 for a nice 7-day vacation to a location I've always wanted to visit. If I was just staying for the 3-4 con days, it'd be closer to $350 If I was going just for the con I can't say it would be worth my time/money. The fact that it's in a tourist location is actually awesome to me. Gonna hit up ALL da slots and buffets

vegas has a lot of super dirt cheap hotels (which are obviously on the lower end of things) so if you don't mind journeying over to PH you can go even cheaper.

Caesar's new buffet is getting good reviews (and it should considering how much it costs). I also like the M casino's buffet but you need a car for that. Bellagio is good too. South Point has some cheap eats at midnight. Downtown I always get the prime rib at least once a trip at the California. There are buy-one-get-one coupons for some food court type places (Venetian, Bally's, New York New York, Monte Carlo, couple of other places) if you're just looking for something really cheap or a snack that I've attached.

If you're there you might as well see a show or two. Most of the Cirque du Soleils are good if you can swing the money. Check out tix4tonight or one of the other bargain ticketing agencies if you want to save some bucks but they usually have designated seating areas in the theater for the half price tickets. If you want better seats/be able to pick your seats directly you might want to just buy regular price at the venue though.

>> No.6644631

If people are bring their cars and what to save money I highly recommend staying at the Silverton. It's not all old and grody yet. And it is a casino and hotel with a huge Bass Pro Shops in it. Its not far from the strip either and its cheap as hell.

I potentially seeing it conflict with ALA, but at the same time. It might actually help out in ALA's favor. ALA's been getting a bit big for it's britches, so it might help if the numbers are reduced just a bit by having people head over to Otakon Vegas.

Talking with a local friend, she says Vegas is TERRIBLE for anime conventions. Otakon Vegas is going to be hurting themselves a bit with it being in Planet Hollywood. Vegas anime conventions biggest demographic are the under 18 crowd. Lord knows there were a ton of 13-16 year olds running around at Anime Vegas. Cons probably going to have pretty low first year numbers unless they have some absolute amazing guests to bring people in. Although depending on how it works out, it could have potential decent numbers since a more experienced convention is working it. Not to mention several people are getting rather tired with ALA and looking for greener pastures.
