How does /cgl do their makeup? Just getting into cosplay and I don't really know what I'm doing. Help much appreciated.

>> No.6643032

Personally I make a lot of mistakes and am incredibly picky with how I do things... also my eyelids fold differently on each eye and it's a pain in the ass to get the wings to somehow look the same on most angles as a result. Solution? I use a wet cotton swab and refine. Get a good eyeliner that doesn't crack or run too easily, but is still water soluble and just practice until you find a style that works for you.

I have one of these and it's definitely decent. You will need a primer for it to stay. If you don't want to buy Urban Decay's Primer (which makes these look awesome) just put some concealer on your lid.

If that's costal scents then it's pretty good. I recently bought their 255 set while it was on sale. Retardedly good deal so I bought a set of their brushes as well (also on sale). The colors are pigmented pretty well for how cheap they were, haven't experimented to much with the reds or blues but the rest are pretty decent. You'll want to use primer though so it won't crease or fade, but it's worth the investment. I haven't had a chance to use the brushes yet so no comment on those. It's a great way to play around with new colors instead of purchasing the expensive individual colors or brand sets.

>> No.6643250

>>6643043
I never saw the point in those considering how few of the colors you're likely to use, and how huge they are. I just buy individual depotted shadows and store them in a customized palette.

OP, look for makeup artists on Youtube (not makeup "gurus," those are just glorified hoarders who do viral marketing crap). pixiwoo would be a start, or lisaeldridgedotcom. Both channels are filled with tutorial videos and should have playlists for learning basics. You can also pick up fairly reliable product recommendations from makeup artist channels. They're more honest than the girls who post "hauls" every other video.

The e.l.f. studio line is pretty good and most brushes are around $3 (or an 11-piece set for $30) - you can order online or go to Target and find most of them there.
Avoid their "professional" line - those brushes are terrible. Rough and they shed like crazy when you wash them. I do use a professional line eye shadow brush for blending though.

I'm in awe of this kind of makeup technique but I also think it looks way too OTP to be appropriate for anything other than parties or special occasions. I see tuts on youtube where girls show you how they do this kind of makeup for everyday wear and I cannot for the life of me understand why they think it's a good idea. Is looking like a raccoon-eyed clown in now?

Not even the most outlandish gal makeup compares to caking on a ton of colorful creams and shadows up to your brows to me.

From what I've gathered by following makeup artist blogs you'd need an eyeliner brush (flat if you just want a little emphasis on your eyes, just press on the base of your eyelashes) or angled if you want to create a thicker line. I've seen an eyeliner brush ran against a damp paper towel to moisten a it a little before picking up the eyeshadow.

what bothers me is how she's completely disregarding her eyeshape and extending the bottom liner way too far. Her eyes aren't upturned enough for that makeup to have an "enlargening effect". Instead, it just makes her eyes seem oddly shapeless...

I encounter that same issue when trying to do that kind of makeup. It's better to just keep the liner close to your eye.

I have two questions for you today, /cgl/!

1.) How do I use liquid liner? I recently bought the Bourjois clubbing liner (it has a brush tip applicator) and I've been messing around a bit but like I have no idea what I'm doing. I have naturally hooded eyes but one eyelid is slightly less .. hooded(?) than the other. Should I just give up on liquid liner and do the whole 'liner brush with dark eyeshadow pressed into the lash line' thing?

2.) Could I have some recommendations for foundations that suit fair skin and don't oxidise weird? Or maybe a quick-fix to help neutralise the oxidisation? I've been having trouble trying to find a foundation that fits my skin tone. I'm very fair, with pretty neutral undertones, but I'm also really ridiculously ruddy all over. My foundation kind of fits me I guess (Clinique's anti-blemish solutions foundation in 01 fresh alabaster) but it oxidises to this weird almost orange-y sort of colour and then my face doesn't look like my face any more. wat do /cgl/ pls gib help

I can't help you with the foundation, but I can help with the eyeliner. You need to have a really steady hand to draw the line. It's basically the same as pencil liner, just in liquid form. When I first started using liquid I found I needed to hold my eyelid lightly closed, if you need to do this always use your ring finger since it's the weakest and you don't want to cause premature wrinkles. If you have hooded eyes, try to keep the line thin, otherwise it might smudge.

I've used the body shop one, the simple cosmetics one, just about every other drugstore and many department store ones including clinique and dior. The dior one was the only one that was simewhat nonirritating and effective but really not worth the price.

Makeup artists use regular gels/face creams to fix or remove makeup because it's much less likely to cause irritation or disturb surrounding makeup while it literally dissolves makeup of the skin. I find that it works perfectly for me l.

Completely dif anon but I do use them and I no longer get black heads on my nose. Basically what I did was take a hot shower, wash my face in said shower right along with whatever else you do (I tend to do hair, body, face depending on what kind of conditioner I might be using). Then after I towel dry, use the pore strip and after removing I use benzyol peroxide 2.5% all over my face and then moisturize.

I don't have particularly sensitive skin so keep that in mind. If you want something less harsh then benzyol, use salicylic acid instead, but be sure to pick one or the other (and check which is in your face wash) and always moisturize after. I will be honest, the pores in my nose still clog, I just haven't had a black head since doing this (and I only did it the one time about a year ago I think?)

There is also this which ebay rec'd to me (probably because I made a bid on some Skinfood samples- I lost) which is supposed to remove blackheads, but I've never used it.

I use generic CVS brand makeup remover because it has the same active ingredients as the Neutrogina one and was cheaper. I had one of the 'grande train' ones. Around $30 from Target. It held a moderate amount of stuff and was sturdy as fuck too. You could probably beat someone to death with it.
Sadly I had to sell mine because the way it opened was obnoxiously space-hogging and didn't fit on the makeup counters, but they have others that open differently.
tl:dr
Check out caboodle cases, but be sure to check how they open.

I don't know if this really counts as makeup, but how do you guys whiten your teeth?
Frankly the overall volume of information and expensive products with fake reviews confuse and terrify me. Cost isn't a problem, but I'd like to hear from a real person before I buy something.
I brush and floss regularly, but my teeth are about this color (not my photo)
I'd like them to be natural looking, but not so obviously yellow.
Much thanks in advance for any advice

I've used baking soda with some success - it tastes foul as fuck but it definitely helps with the whitening. I wasn't that sure that it would help, so I only did my top teeth, every 2nd day for a week, and I noticed that they were a couple of shades lighter than the bottom teeth by the end of the week. I stopped using the baking soda then as it's abrasive and can damage enamel long-term, plus you only see my top teeth most of the time. Smokers' toothpaste is also designed to whiten teeth so that may work well too.

I recommend (and my dentist does too lol) Crest Pro White toothpaste and teeth strips. They've helped a lot for me. Sometimes I'll brush with the toothpaste dry, just the front where my teeth would show when I smiled.

I do have to ask, do you use a motorized toothbrush? Sounds silly, but using one over a regular manual helps LOADS. Using one for the first time took out so much gunk from my mouth the first time I used it, no toothpaste just water, my mother when and bought 3 more. It won't make your teeth super white, but it will "polish" them a bit.

Curious, but how often do you drink milk? I absolutely detest milk, so I never drink it. I read somewhere that a lack of calcium actually prevents teeth from turning white no matter how much you brush.

Try taking calcium pills that also have vitamin D in them, since that's supposed to help you better absorb calcium. I started taking them some time ago after talking to a doctor about some problems I had which were said to be symptoms of a calcium deficiency. My teeth have begun to whiten a bit and I'm pretty happy about it.

Now I've just been keeping up the whiteness from the last whitestrip use by avoiding all dark drinks or drinks that can stain teeth (brown sodas, coffee, teas, sugary punch drinks, ect), and use a toothpaste that includes some form of whitening. s'all I have 'cause magazines I read are all in Japanese ans 'cause I like gal makeup and the variety of unique types of eye makeup incorporated into the style. And you don't have to be Asian to utilize the techniques shown, on the contrary actually. I don't understand why in every thread where I share tuts from gal mags there'll be someone who whines that they don't have Asian eyes so there's NO WAY the makeup would work on them. You can easily alter a technique slightly to accommodate whatever eye shape you've got while still being fairly similar to the intended effect. Plus I'm not a fan of mainstream western makeup in general. Doesn't mean i'm a weeb.

In the mags fro m the west, it's always bland looks like this that are featured with maybe some oddly colored eyeliner or the same old shadow on crease shit. i'm not saying galmake isn't repetitive sometimes but I just think that there's more variety overall.

For hooded lids, playing up your lashes is best. I have that problem, too. Any sort of non neutral eye-shadow gets hidden unless I apply it like pic related. Tight lining looks best. Thick, liquid eyeliner should be avoided because the line will get hidden in the crease and it won't look good.

Use a light color on your lid and always place the shadow on the bony part above your crease.

Try to avoid doing an all-over smoky eye as they will emphasize the recession of the eye.

Do not mimic tutorials step by step that are catered to very flat-faced asians as that won't do you any favors.

Also note the high points in your eye area and ever so slightly darken them while lightening area that recede.

Okay, the first thing I saw was the eyeshadow palette and even though that's a long gone conversation, I just have to share mine. I got this for like, 10 bucks on ebay. 120 neutral eyeshadow palette. It's amazing and can do LOTS of things for cosplay, just for like making eyes pop and stuff.

Now, onto my own questions.
I'm a newbie cosplayer, and I'm working hard on a Shaymin cosplay. I've got the basic of basic cosplay makeup down, but I'm still stuck on a few things.
Are false eyelashes really necessary when wearing glasses? They look really great, but I don't want them to rub against my lenses or anything.
And that being said, how do I make my eye makeup noticeable under my glasses? For Shaymin, I'm going to do a light brown and then a soft green over that. It won't be TOO dark or anything, but I still need it to be noticeable. Does anyone have any tips for this?

I'm also really thinking of some BB cream. I've heard a lot about it since I started getting back into cosplay. I usually rely on ELF, since it's cheap and it works fine for me. I'm a natural ginger, so my skin is really pale, and I like to wear paler makeup anyway.

Any answers will be appreciated! I'm still super new on /cgl too

>> No.6652739

>>6652721
Fellow bespectacled anon here.
About the false lashes, it depends on how long your natural lashes are. Mine are quite long, and even though my eyes are deep-set, they still come on contact with the lenses depending on the mascara I use. I think you should try out a pair and see how comfortable they are on you. After all, you can reuse them 3-4 times.
Eyeshadow: for Shaymin, I think you should do maybe a light brown over the lid, darker in the crease, white near the tear duct and save the green for the lower lashline as a pop of colour. Maybe it's just the way my glasses sit on my face, but eye makeup on my top lid is usually hidden by my frames.
BBcream is fine, but if you need more coverage or are going to be photographed, a proper foundation without SPF is probably better.

I think I may actually go with the green for the bottom lash, it seems like it would be a really great idea, and I just invested in some white eyeliner. My frames are big for my face, and my bottom lashes are more open than my top lid, so I'm with you there.

I have recently started usong the St. Ives Apricot Scrub.
I have REALLY dry skin on my face, Especially my forehead. Its only been used 3 times in a week and a half and my chin is breaking out and my forehead is dry again after a couple hours! The nivea facial moisturizer made me break out too.

WHAT DO I DO.

Just like, Put it on a cotton ball and use it like a lotion on my face? How often would i do that?

Also, I have a really long face with a long chin and no cheekbones. Any tips on contouring?
Otherwise i'm thinking of just getting plastic surgery. :|

Yes basically. You just need to moisturize the dry areas of your face. (I also started use the Apricot scrub too; it was a sample at CVS and figured it was worth a shot. I have no complaints so far.)

Otherwise if you have a narrow face and want to widen it just highlight the tops of your cheekbones (the triangular area under your eye) and that should create the illusion of a wider face. Using blush like this as well can have the same effect.

STOP USING HARSH PHYSICAL SCRUBS

WHY

It causes microscopic tears on your skin and is incredibly irritating

If you can feel it "scrubbing" your face what you are feeling are TINY CUTS DAMAGING YOUR BEAUTIFUL DELICATE FACIAL SKIN UGH

U GIRLS

and yes a cold-pressed organic oil or very gentle heavy duty moisturizer (if you have a sephora near you, I would get a ton of samples and shop around -- cosdna is also a good resource for how potentially irritating or comedogenic a product is) and/or an exfoliant with tiny gentle beads or glycolic/lactic acid would be a good choice

I know this thread is for eyes, but I have a question about false eyelashes.

What brand do use for cosplay and for everyday wear?
I usually get my eyelashes from a lingerie boutique my friend works at because I get them really cheap. I think the brand is called Baci?

I've really been wanting to try out some of the dolly wink brand but I can't get over the fact that the package of lashes itself are $20 plus shipping from wherever its coming from. Im very impatient as well, so that doesn't help.
I've considered trying out Katy Perrys eyelashes but I've heard they don't work well with small eyes, and being Asian, I can't help my eyes out in that aspect. I think I might try out a pair of sephora lashes

If this is irrelevant, I'll delete it

extremely flakey-prone skin anon here

sometimes during the winter I'd have the nasolabial areas become irritated to the point of being red, inflamed, and painfully burning

I've started doing very gentle exfoliation with a slightly damp washcloth, with some sturdy lotion. I used to not use lotion for some stupid reason because I figured that I was breaking out so why put oil on my skin? I was breaking out because my skin was cracking which makes it easier for bacteria to get in.

Either way you need to exfoliate GENTLY and then moisturize; using lotion without exfoliating is just going to moisturize your dead skin. I've had a lot of success with clinique dramatically different moisturizing lotion, and swisso logical day/night creams. There's an oil of olay one that was great as well and that would be less expensive but I can't recall the specific product.

Just highlight the inner corner a bit and play up those lashes. I wouldn't try to use much eyeshadow on your upper lid, you don't need it.

Any tips for preventing makeup creasing under your eyes? My undereyes tend to crinkle when I smile (if I'm not doing a fake smile where your eyes are unaffected) so I'm wondering if there's a good way to avoid looking like I aged 20 years over the course of a day.

Are there any specific gentle chemical scrubs you recommend? They all sound kind of scary to me, with the acids. Yes I know acid won't necessarily burn your face off but still.
I don't use a scrub with bits in it but a face brush like this from the Body Shop (not my picture) with Coalface from Lush. Could the brushing be damaging my facial skin?

>> No.6654393

>>6654364
That brush doesn't look very abrasive, I'd say if you are brushing gently it's probably fine. Tiny, rounded, (usually) synthetic things are what you want to look for with physical exfoliation. If that's working for you, it's probably fine. If you're interested in an AHA (and it really does not hurt at all! the OTC/for daily use ones are a lot lower % than a clinical peel or something), I'd look for a moisturizer with around 5% glycolic or glycolic/lactic.

Makeup remover...

I personally prefer using almay or Neutrogena wipes but just buying a liquid remover that you dab onto a napkin is cheaper in the long run.

This, but make sure not to get any oil in your eyes. Your tears are water-based and have trouble getting rid of oil, and letting oil build up in your eyes over time could cause some problems.
You can dab a napkin or q-tip in the oil and spread it around your eyes, though. I sometimes use it for eyeshadow and -liner but only ever use regular makeup remover for mascara.

I just wash it off at the end of a day with a face wash. I have some makeup remover towelettes for travel and a bottle of makeup remover in case I make a mistake while doing my makeup, but I just wash off my everyday makeup. I used Avon's Extralasting makeup remover but I ran out and now I have a Maybelline one.

I'm sorry for the vague question but what do you guys consider your skin care and make up essentials? Like the basic things every person should have.
I'm extremely new to this stuff, as in I've never done it before and I'm just doing research before I start putting things on my face.
I'm mostly concerned with a basic skin care routine right now, I have fairly dry skin.

Skin care-wise: moisturiser is pretty much number 1. Then you'll probably need some sort of face wash (never use soap to wash your face), a cleanser and a toner.

Makeup-wise: mascara at the very least. Eyeliner and neutral eye shadow, lip balm or gloss, concealer and a tinted moisturiser or BB cream is good too.
