What cons have you actually paying for the concert?
Maybe it's the fact that the cons I go to, they usually book really unknown artists, so they're just glad for the publicity.
Those buttons are really fucking stupid, if they're more than, like, fifty cents. I have some friends that like getting them, though, since they're usually, like, ten for five dollars.

I get a lot of my Lolita jewelry and accessories from Artist Alley. I love Artist alley! It's probably my favorite place to spend money at a convention.

Though some AA stuff is really crappy, like shrinky dinks / laminated keychains... etc. Probably because I make mine on printed acrylic and unless they were a good friend, I wouldn't bother with them.

>> No.6610904

American anime merchandise. You can buy that stuff at FYE, Amazon, etc. cheaper than a con. In the dealer's room, stick to the Japanese merch. Actually some merch in general. As long as it's cheaper than whatever you spend on the merch + shipping online, it's a better deal. OR if it's limited edition or isn't being made anymore.

But seriously, who goes to a con and buys the same stuff you can get in a store here?!

Also, kimono. Those people price gouge. I always make a point to tell the people what my price point is, and some guy showed me a lovely orange kimono within my budget that I was pretty ready to buy on the spot. But then he freaking changed his mind and said, 'Oh this is really too nice to sell for $X." So I walked away and didn't give him my business. Stick to Ichiroya, way better deal and selection. They try and tell you, "Oh you can't buy online, what if the colors don't match!" to get you to buy their kimono and their obi. But at the end of the day we're all just Westerners walking around in traditional Japanese clothes.

AAfag here planning on having my own table at Katsucon.

Artist alleys are really great if you look past all the really generic shit. It's really great if you, well, like art. I usually try to keep an eye out for interesting styles, compositions, and unique takes on the generic fanart you see everywhere. To be honest, I really love when an artist has their original art for sale too, because what if I love their style but don't give a shit about any of the fanart they draw?

Although, they're of course not the best place for art appreciators for like I said, the generic shit you see at every table. Small Press Expo is a really great indie-comics based expo that's essentially a giant artist alley, but with 100% more quality.

I don't know, I like art a lot?

I've actually found a decent chunk of out of print manga at anime conventions that cost a ridiculous amount more online. You can occasionally find some pretty good deals on manga and art books at conventions. Although with the latter I got a ton for 3/4 off at a Japanese bookstore's booth because they were going out of business. Manga though, manga's usually a good buy at cons.

Kimono vendors are hit and miss. Some price gouge, bad, but there's some I've found that are really good about it - there's this one chick that shows up to Ichibancon every year that lives in japan and pretty much comes to the one con to unload stock, and she's an honest vendor and a lovely person.

You have to take into account that shipping from japan, if they're buying from the japanese sellers, is going to run between twenty-forty dollars for something that weight. That said, people who sell freaking graduation ko-furisode for like a hundred fifty bucks and try to act like its a good deal? Those people are assholes.

Yeah, I could see them making bank. I'd be surprised if they didn't extend hours if they were that close to the con.
Food for congoers, easy money for them all weekend long.
Sakuracon, definitely stuffing my face all weekend so I don't feel so bad by the end. Just need to figure out where all the food places are beforehand.

Holy shit was it an overly-generic lesbian graphic novel? A couple years some guy did the same thing to me, would not shut up. It was like 3 years ago? Typical desperate starving writer/creeper guy.

Does anyone ever dump money into these little bastards? I personally love the little mystery collectable items. Especially when they're MH related. Otherwise, I think cheap shit (ie: shitty little handmade keychains, earrings, random clothing) amongst the AA and dealer's room are among the biggest wastes of money.

I nearly shit myself when I saw a Revoltech Rathalos at Youmacon. Picked it up even though I was planning on not actually buying anything. I'm not hot on mystery stuff, though.

There really isn't a lot that I've seen at cons that's worth what they want. Stuff like prints and posters and etc just doesn't appeal at all, even for reasonable prices.

I'd love to come upon one of those Rathalos figures this summer. How much it run you?

I do too, it always makes me happy to see those MH boxes.
Heck on ebay the only sellers sell them for like $30 each anyway, not like there's better options than $6-8 a pop.

I always bring a big case of ramen (or microwavable meals, if there's a microwave. and milk and cereal if there's a fridge). I also bring a hot pot, they're about $10 and they heat up water within a minute or two. You can also cook in them apparently.

$55. Very reasonable for such a nice Revoltech, the coloring detail is delightful. He's gonna hang out on the shelf with my gunpla.

Polite sage.

Shit that you don't see everywhere.

There was a guy at a con one year who made aluminum foil figurines for $5. I bought one, and I still have it.

A friend and I plan on buying those alpaca-plushies because we're not really sure where to get good-quality ones without paying a fuckton for shipping.

That's about it. Everything else I spend is on food.

I would if they didn't try to sell me things anyway.
Maybe I just paranoid, but all the artists I've talked to in the AA seem to try to befriend me to guilt-trip me into buying something.

It has nothing to do with whether or not you like anything from the AA because there's always bound to be shit or something you have no interest in.
It has to do with the "Why do I have to pay something when I can get it free online" mentality. I just plain hate those cunts. Don't want to pay for a print? fine. But don't act like you're "rocking da boat".

Okay, but to be fair, AA vendors have to still advertise a little bit. It's a market, there is competition, they need to make money, and to be frank, some con goers are just retarded as shit sometimes and won't know that you're selling stuff at your table unless you tell them (even if you have prices up). Obviously calling out over the table is obnoxious and no one wants that, but mentioning that you're selling stuff shouldn't be seen as completely pushy either. Artists are at the con for a very different reason from most congoers, so their behavior and interactions will be a little different as well.
