The thing is, conventions DO have these things, but they are usually set aside for photo gatherings and not sit-down draw meets. Homestuck fandom is the only one that I know of that even holds draw meets to begin with, or at least on the scale that we do.

The scale is really just in proportion to the fandom. It's a massive fandom, so photoshoots and meet-ups are also massive.

Even if it's not a sit-down meet, it's getting pretty difficult to find areas for Homestuck photoshoots because most buildings just don't have the space to accommodate that many people in one contained area unless it's for a sanctioned event.

How do you guys decide who to cosplay as, anyway? Posting a photo online feels weird and revealing if you don't even have anything to show for it yet, unlike being photoed at the con in costume as intended. Do you just take a wild guess, or get friends to help you out, or what?

I'm male, 5 foot 10.5, broad-shouldered with a bit of a muscular build but not overweight, brown hair that curls when it gets too long. Can't grow a good beard or mustach but can grow some decent sideburns. Kind of a broad face, big smile and big cheeks.

Depends where you're looking for. Otakon and Katsucon are both in Maryland, though Katsucon is closer to Virginia, seeing as it's at the National Harbor instead of Baltimore like Otakon is. AnimeUSA used to be in Arlington but is in DC now. Nekocon is in Hampton, and Anime Mid-Atlantic is in Chesapeake. Those are all the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

Personal opinion is that I REALLY FUCKING HATE ROMPERS

But I think you'd need some really nice legs to pull this off, anon. Good craftsmanship will get you far on this one, but it really won't be complete without the long, slender legs to make that cut look good. I'd also recommend attaching her half-bustle to a belt or boned cincher underneath the romper instead of directly to it, or else the weight of it will pull the romper in unattractive ways.

Be wise with your fabric choices; if you go for satin, use something like a more matte dress satin, none of that cheap costume satin. If you find a fabric you like but you're not sure it will lend well to the garment's construction, just do a "will __ fabric work with this design?" post, either here or in one of the help threads.

Be concious of the bustle length while you're constructing it, too. For ease of wearing, shorten it or add in an inconspicuous loop of sheer ribbon or fabric, maybe even a lop of beads matching the rest of your detailing, so you can easily pick the bustle off the floor while not posing for pictures, while walking, or while standing in a crowded area.

My friend and I just finished a cosplay weekend together, and the last thing we were doing was making a base for Latula's tunic.

and being a great friend, I fucked it up. (We only realized the symbol mistake when touching it up after she took it off, we did the painting on her so the paint wouldn't stretch).

Is there ANY way to redeem this without starting over? We would, but she lives ages away and I can't re-paint on her before the con. The only thing I can think of is painting the entire "inside" of the libra symbol (in the loop and around the back) with fabric paint mixed to match the color of the fabric to cover it, or covering that whole space with the dyed fabric we have leftover before we tore off the sleeves. (we havent hemmed it yet)

It'll look fucked up no matter what, but I'm hoping maybe some of you have some ideas to make it not be completely, irrevocably ruined.

When I did Kanaya I used just the plain white face paint. One thing I will say though is it's a little tough to work with. You need to apply it in layers. And rather then use the translucent powder I used to the white powder to keep my face extra white.

My biggest gripe (other than the color, which I assume is a problem with the photo) is how she constructed it - I saw the in-progress photos and she basically made a western-style dress and then stuck a sash on top of it. Same with the other in-progress photo - there's a serious lack of understanding what the dress actually is. That being said, it does look pretty darn good, and I'm interested in seeing how it'll turn out when it's done.

I need help, cgl. I am finishing up my Meulin cosplay, and I don't want to settle for an ugly, incorrectly-colored green shirt. Problem is, I screwed up two of my three white shirts in the dyeing process. Any tips for even dyeing or links to canonically colored shirts? I used the bucket method, and I did stir it a lot. My dad was wary about me using a bathtub and staining it green forever, so he gave me a Home Depot bucket. Oh, I should probably add that I mixed Sunshine Yellow and Royal Blue RIT Dye with Olive Green iDye.

I suggest adding some volume to your dye bath, then, and as shitty as this advice sounds: "stir more," or at least stir more effectively. Those lines and unevenness are caused by uneven exposure to the dye bath; while soaking, certain parts of the shirt may be scrunched up, so the result is that you're accidentally utilizing tie dye methods. Having more fluid in the bucket for the shirt to slosh around in, and stirring the garment in a way as to avoid it being scrunched up the same way the entire time, will both help achieve a more even dye.

You NEED to continuously stir your fabric while dyeing it. I've mixed dyes before and everything has come out uniformly, I just pretty much never stopped stirring it. Then rinse until the water runs clear, it'll be a while, but don't cute corners.

Do you have wigs or glasses for any particular characters already? Any preference with who you want to cosplay (kids, trolls, etc.)? One option would be to incorporate the text colour or god tier colour scheme of a character into your outfit, maybe add some symbols or accessories to customise it, like cufflinks and hairclips. Don't make it tacky though, like... attaching a paper space symbol onto your black blouse and calling yourself jade or something?

If you're set on a costume, what you will be able to make in time will depend on your speed, supplies and skill. The kids have some semi-formal/formal outfits (e.g. Jade's dead shuffle or eclectica dresses, dave's suits), some require more sewing and others thrifting.

I styled the wig as if she had a mohawk/fauhawk cause that's what I think she has so that's why it looks flat on the sides, and I'm gonna spike it when I put it on since my wig has a nice natural flip/curl to it

I'm in class now so I'll take pics of my horns later. They aren't as big as they look in the pic cause it's a weird angle (they're 7in tall I think) and they're tapered but probably not enough so I'll see what I can do since to fix them I don't have enough time to remake them (Katsu crunch ugh)

I shaped aluminum sculpting mesh into the shape, covered with tin foil (you can just shape foil if you don't have/can't find mesh, I go to art school so there's tons of art supply stores around me and the mesh makes it lighter than solid foil, just make sure to keep it hollow), covered with model magic, dry, sand the hell out of it, cover with paperclay, sand first with a rough grit to even out the bumps, fine grit to get a nice finish, run over the paperclay with a wet brush to smooth it out even more, dry, paint and a few coats of mod podge and you're done! To attach them I use the headband under the wig with screws in it to poke out of the wig and to attach I fill the insides of the horn with hot glue and stick it on the screw and hold it until the glue cools, making sure the wig fibers are out of the way so you don't get glue all over them. It holds perfectly through the entire day and you can just pull the hot glue out when you're done or you're going to wear them again.

The hollow cast will make your job 100% easier. If you do the expanding foam inside the hollow cast, you can insert a long screw or bolt into it from the other side of a headband to wear under the wig or something of the sort.

If by "way to attach them" you mean you're turning them into gloves rather than socks, I recommend sewing a band of sturdy elastic and using those like garters, except around your upper/lower arms (lower if you're cosplaying someone with long sleeves, upper for short sleeves)

long and stupid story: it's all Facebook and then people bitching in the tumblr tag. Basically a group of vocal people decided they wanted new FB mods. Admins held an election and the top four got promoted. Some new guy to the group and his friends got mega butthurt that he didn't get elected, and one or more people started emailing various threats (including threatening to kill a dog apparently??). Group pitched a bigger fit when admins didn't insta-cave to their bitchy demands on the FB page to promote sir douche to modship, and then the group was "mysteriously" hacked this morning to kick all mods and crown sir douche to reigning Bostonstuck facebook admin.
