That would usually require styling the wig somewhat (or getting a better one). Shittalia cosplayers can't even be bothered to trim their bangs to fit their face, I doubt they'll style a wig. I still see the ugly braided hair curls, and there are plenty of tutorials about how to make them.

Meant to ask this in the last thread then forgot.

At a small con I attended a few weeks ago there was an Iceland who wore her flag as a cape. I meant to say something to her since it's generally bad flag etiquette, but didn't have the heart to actually mention it (and didn't want to get into an argument potentially, since I've had some people not understand flag protocol and get pissy about it).

So should I have said something? I'm in the local com I think she's a member of, but I do NOT want to start shit on that page, though I guess I could message the mods and ask they address the issue.

Flags as capes are still bad, right?

I would recommend quietly bringing it up to her, maybe in person or in a message explaining why it is offensive without calling her out on her actions too harshly. Hopefully she'll be understanding. I would avoid talking to the mods about it because that has more of an oppertunity of creating a shitstorm.

That being said, I've heard some people say that using a flag as a prop period is disrespectful and should never be done.

Yeah, and I will give the girl at least a little credit: she wore it horizontally instead of vertically, so it didn't touch the ground AT all, but I may see if I can find out who she was looking at the group (I'm in the group, but am not friends with anyone, and don't necessarily look to be, no offense to that group).

Normally I would say something, but the last time I brought flag stuff up with a cosplayer (who had not one, but a whole bundle of mini flags laying ON THE GROUND) she didn't know what I was talking about and was rude.

I only use mine as a prop when the character would have actually used the flag. I.e. Viking Norway wouldn't have the same flag as today, so I only carry that flag in my sailor uniform or pirate outfit (which even then is pushing it, but it was also their Halloween costumes, so that's where I get away with it historically).

I think having a flag as a prop is alright for pirate versions or old historical versions like from the 17th and 18th century because back then they did wave their colors around and pilage and conquer shit.

Just don't whip it around or wave it in people's faces, don't let it touch the ground, and don't bump or hit people with it.

Agreed. I do want to downsize my flag because at larger cons it's actually a hassle to deal with in panels and I feel like it takes up too much space. If I had one that was like 1' x 3' it would be big enough but would be easier to roll up and hold during a panel. As it is I awkwardly wrap it up and slide it at an angle half under the seat in front, but I know it's probably in the way of viewers behind me.

I may look into that, thanks for the tip! Though usually the reason I carry a flag is because it makes the outfit more recognizable as the character? If that make sense. That and it always reminds me of when Hetalia was new at cons and it was like everyone with a flag was a big Hetalia family.

Does anyone by any chance know of any flag for Viking Scandinavia? I've done some googling before and I haven't seen much documented, but I have considered making a flag for my Viking Norway.

The Vikings in Scandinavia didn't quite have flags, the same way we have today and mostly if they had it would be a symbol for their tribe or for the viking kings a red flag with a lion on it. It was first in the 13th century the real flags for the scandinavian countries were etablished.

I like to label my cosplays with version numbers, so I'm in Viking Norway 2.0, which is MOSTLY where I want the cosplay to be, but I do plan on adding a shield for when I take it to compete at A-fest this year.

I'm planning to use sintra to keep it lightweight and layer it to mimic the appearance of wood and metal. I know I can paint and get a metal look easily, but for the wood effect I'm not sure if I'll try some kind of paper or what. I may invest in one of those fake wood grain tools they use for home DIY projects, since I want it to look nice and am fairly confident of my painting abilities (putting that art degree to good use).

I may draw up a design and ask about it here more specifically soon. Beyond the shield, I don't think the costume needs much else. I've got a sword and a knife and sheaths for both, and I don't think they'd allow a hawk in the con.

This may be obvious advice, but for anyone who doesn't know how or doesn't want to cut a wig and potentially mangle it, just take it to your hair dresser. Mine was always nice and cut mine for half price and before I moved out of state she gave me an old razor to use for when I start cutting them myself.

Okay seagulls, I'm planning out the design for my shield.

In terms of construction, I want the finished product to look similar to the picture.

I plan on cutting out "boards" of sintra and layering them over a circulr sintra base. I'll use sintra for the concentric rings and either purchase metal rivets or use clay. For the center dome I'll probably cover a half Styrofoam ball in clay to give it a more hammered metal look. To get the wood finish I'm going to use a faux graining tool and my artistic talents.

I'd like to paint a design on the "wooden part" (probably will use my oil paints and mix with liquin to thin it out some and give it transparency so I don't completely paint over the wood grain and lose my faux texture). However, I'm not quite sure WHICH design to pick.

I've done some research on Viking symbols and have come up with a few possibilities:

-Triskel (the curvilinear ones with the spirals)
-Flyfot (again the curvilinear ones with the spirals, NOT a swastika)
-Valknot
-Raven
-Dragon
-Triquetra (I have these carved on the hilt of the sword and on my Nordic cross beret)
-Gungnir
-Odin's Horn
-Hugin & Munin

I am drawn to the Triskel and Triquetra because I have elements in my outfit that already mimic that (coiled wire on the sword and knife, triquetras on the hilt and hair clip) and to me, feel like a good match for Norway. I think some of the more rigidly geometric pieces feel more harsh like I imagine for Sweden or Denmark, but I think the swirls are more fantastical and ethereal (if that makes sense) like I associate with Norway. However, Odin's Horn and Hugin & Munin would be very nice pieces that would stand out on a shield.

So any thoughts, other Nordic fans?

I would say either the dragon or the raven, mostly the raven because I think they would suit Norway really good, also some of the drawings I have seen of him, he is holding some eagle/raven and it would look good on the shield, plus if you like Hugin & Munin then a pair of raven are great, since they were both Odin's ravens.

She's actually a pretty deep character, yeah. I feel like too many people don't realize it.
Though I still am a bit disappointed at some of her characterization. How even in modern-day strips, she's obsessed with Russia, or how she supposedly likes Lukashenko. But I don't know, Hima can't get everything right.
