Both of these so much.

And on the subject of people being a dick because they hate you character. Several years back when I was into Kingdom Hearts, I cosplayed as Kairi. Saw a Xellos (from Slayers) cosplayer. I was so fucking happy because fuck yeah, Slayers has been my favorite anime for the past 12 years. Politely ask her for a picture then she says in a nasty tone, ¨Kairi doesn't deserve a Keyblade. She sucks.¨ BITCH, I JUST WANTED YOUR PICTURE AND TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT SLAYERS. Her Xellos wasn't even that good... I was just happy to see another fan...

Also one of my biggest pet peeves is when people cream themselves over black cosplayers that cosplay from Homestuck or Adventure Time but don't even paint their skin the right color. I remember there was a picture of two black girls cosplay Marceline and Bubblegum and Tumblr was creaming themselves over them. They didn't even paint their skin the right color! Obviously if I'm dressed up as a character from a series, I would be pleased to meet others from that series. I do not mind if you come up to see me. I do not mind if you want to talk. In fact, I'd be pleased. I do not even mind if you feel the need to be in character in order to approach me because of whatever reason.

What I do mind, however, is when you feel the need to break my ankles and splatter my face on the pavement screaming the name of the character I'm cosplaying in lieu of conversation. Where, on this blessed earth, aside from the land of 2D moonrunes, does anyone find that acceptable, ever?

Hey man, no one's ever gonna perfectly portray the character they're cosplaying. Getting all worked up over body shape and even race is pretty nonsensical. I mean, I'd mind if the cosplayers totally fucked up their costume or acted terribly OOC or something, but as long as their outfits are good and they conduct themselves rationally (and they're not total hamplanets), there shouldn't be much of an issue.

As for the Marceline/Bubblegum couple, maybe they looked good regardless of having inaccurate skin color. I just think you're not used to POC getting as much attention now as they did in the past, honestly.

Yes a lot of people do fake it, but they're also pretty easy to pick out. They're the ones being the loudest and are the ones hoping that their noise covers up the fact that they don't know their source material.

I feel like the real fans or people interested in something are the ones who are excited to discuss the source material with another fan but don't need to scream, "OMG I'M SUCH A GURRL NURD. IVE LUVED DIS SHO/COMIC/ANIMU/GAME SINC I WUZ 3! I NO EVERYTHANG BOUT IT KEKEKE"

///
And contributing: one thing that really grinds my gears is when a cosplayer discovers a new stitch or technique because they finally read a sewing manual/got a lesson/saw another cosplayer use the technique, and they now loudly proclaim that this is the ONLY way to do something everyone not doing it is an unskilled idiot, someone truly doing more work than they should, or is just too stupid to learn such a glorious thing, nevermind that it might not be necessary or look right on any number of projects. Because it means different things to different people, unfortunately. Nu-nerds are obsessed with it because calling yourself a nerd (in their minds) is a way to say that you're smart and love gadgets and cool new tech but you're also awkward and dress funny (only in a cute way!) and it's got enough self deprecating connotation so that they can say it without sounding like they're bragging.

Older nerds tend to only identify themselves with the term when forced to do so, and most of them have spent large portions of their lives trying to pass as "normal." The struggle with nerdiness is integral to a lot of their personal development (overcoming self doubt and social anxiety, finding romance while being true to themselves, dealing with social stigma, etc) and so when they see the first group talking about being nerds it strikes these people in a very personal way. It's not so much the title as it is these people feel like their personal struggles are being brushed aside and replaced by a halloween costume.

In either case I think people need to chill out. I'm in the second camp and I deal with it just by ignoring people that bother me. It's not hard.

What constitutes a nerd to you?

>>6600056
I don't get the "struggle with nerdiness" though. Like, why do people think it's stigmatizing to have an interest? Everyone has interests that they've invested in, why are some considered nerdy and some aren't? What makes something nerdy? Why would they have to "pass" as "normal" when having invested interests IS normal?

>> No.6600112

>>6600108
If it's something preferred by introverted people, it's abnormal and should be mocked. It's fine to be insanely obsessed with watching a sport you don't even play, but playing tabletop games/competitive card games is fucked up.

Basically it boils down to people who don't understand or accept that others don't like the same things as them. More people like mainstream things, thus more people think non-mainstream things are wrong.

>> No.6600132

>>6600108
The struggle with nerdiness generally comes from an unfortunate series of events that differs from person to person. I can only speak to my own experience but what happened was:

>>passion for literature/fantasy/science, basically weird stuff nobody wants to talk about when they're young
>>grow up alone, become teenage, enter disgusting acne/mother still buys my clothes/hormonal angst phase
>>other people's disinterest in me changes to outright disgust and teasing
>>don't have the social graces or experience to know how to deal with it, get mad, shut out everyone else even further

After that it was years of upward climb out of the shitpit, trying to erase every gross thing I hated about myself and basically healing all the wounds of youth, imagined or otherwise.

People consider some hobbies nerdy and others not because of pointless social stigma and rules nobody is really clear on. "Nerds" get singled out because their intense focus on asocial hobbies doesn't give them much ability or experience to defend themselves with, and they end up painting a bullseye on themselves by accident. The easiest way for a lot of petty young people to feel better is to make other people feel worse. It's a vicious cycle.

So, I'm not sure if you people just exist in really nerdy circles and are therefore talking about internal nerd politics, or if it actually is very different for other people. Comics and video games are pretty mainstream and DEFINITELY get co-opted by people who are casual as fuck. But being into anime still makes you a gigantic loser wherever I've been. Even if someone enjoys American animation or live-action Japanese cinema, they get very defensive about not being an anime fan.

Sometimes there are loudmouths who have relatively low power-levels, but it's more like they're overly enthusiastic weeaboos than "poseurs." I mean, I fucking hate them, but they come off as autistic, not hipsters.

Star Wars and Dr. Who in particular need to piss right the fuck off. I like both those things, but for fuck's sake, don't start making panels and scheduling photoshoots.

Oh my goood, I feel the same. I'm still new to cosplaying but I find using broadcloth works to test a pattern, and not to wear it out as a finished cosplay.

A friend of mine is also new and uses broadcloth because it's cheap; she isn't into cosplaying for srs bsn but still would like to look her best. We are planning for a "go big or go home" sort of cosplay, so hopefully she'll invest in better materials but we are such beginners, I wouldn't know where to start with fabrics. Not going to derail the thread any more, but it would be helpful to have a visual chart of character examples and the type of fabrics to look for that best suits the character's clothing.

It's not even just the fabric. It's the whole mentality that goes with it. That half-assed, lazy, unskilled approach to costume making. Just a single stitch to hold together things or not having a lining layer to keep the thing from being practically see through or not tailoring the thing to fit and creating some bagging, wrinkly smock that hangs over you or leaving frayed edges visible or loose threads.

I don't expect everyone to be a master tailor, but at the same time, half-assing it that badly means you'd have been better off if you didn't even try.

I often very nicely done Sailor Moon cosplayers, and they forget simple things like chokers, choker ornaments, and incorrect shoe or missing shoes details. Or when things like pins, buttons, or patches are on the wrong side of the garment.

It's because they're so fixable or very easy to not get wrong. Like why would a Sailor Mars cosplayer have black high heels instead of red, or why would a Sailor Venus forget her ankle strap?

For a con, biggest peeves are people with horrible breath who have to get right in your face and people who invade personal space.

Broadcloth has its uses. It's most commonly used for dress shirts, petticoats and old-school nighties and bloomers. The reason why is because it breathes easy, is easy to clean and is also very affordable.

You would not want to make a dress shirt or a pair of bloomers for practical use (as a functional undergarment) out of a heavy quilting cotton.

It's also thin enough to ruffle very nicely, where a heavier cotton wouldn't. That being said. Don't make an entire costume out of broadcloth. That's going full-retard.

I suppose my pet peeve is people who think every costume needs to be made out of twill, kona cotton or dupioni silk. There are thousands of different blends and types of fabrics out there, and using too much of one texture (unless you're intentionally going for a flat look) never looks realistic or high quality. Satin is also not the devil. It's just a dangerous weapon in the wrong hands.

That shit isn't cool at all. Talk about throwing customer service out the window. The thousands of people I deal with at each con, I really only get a handful of people who deserve a kick in the pants.

Also, as a wig dealer, two things bother me. People returning obviously worn wigs and lie saying they never wore it or wore it on just long enough to try it(I'm sorry when you return a wig that looks like a rats nest and reeks of perfume), and people trying to get their wigs styled AT the booth. I don't have an outlet at the booth and they want me to do styles that require a blowdryer and hairspray. I had one girl who wanted me to style a Sasuke wig and didn't want to pay for the styling job. You don't go into a salon and ask to get your hair cut for free, so don't come to my booth and try to take away an hour of my time for free when I've got other customers who want to buy their wigs and have questions.

Also this came up in conversation, but people abusing kickstarter to pay for their cosplay and vacations to Japan. I distinctly remember seeing a couple girls from a maid cafe running a kickstarter so they could take all expenses paid trip to japan for "research" in authetic maid cafes. Also back when WCS preliminaries or whatever were hosted at Katsu, a couple of locals started a donation drive to try to earn enough money to fly out to Katsu so they could compete in the preliminaries and try to get in saying it "Was their dream to get into WCS" They're both adults and fully capable of working and saving money. If they couldn't afford that year, they could go next year. WCS isn't just going to suddenly disappear. Somehow they did end up making it out to the con and had their prop fall part on stage and the girl just give up.

OH GOD THIS. ALL THE THIS.
I am friends with this couple.
And we were all going to the NYCC, and I was like "Oh it is cool maybe we will see each other there!"
And they wanted to take the train together, and I was cool with that, they don't go into NYC that often and I do all the time, it was also there first time at the convention and I have been going for years so I did not mind showing them the way. They also said (not offer, just said) they were driving me and my boyfriend to the train, it was cold I was cool with not walking... Also, two of there friends would be on the train with us, no big, I think it will make the train ride interesting.
And then we got there, and I had sold a ticket to somewhone and had to give it to her, so I wandered off. The two friends also went off to do there own thing.
And me and my boyfriend went about enjoying our day, going to panels and walking around the dealers room, ectect normal con stuff.
We happen to stop to eat at the same time, whatever, cool, so we sit to eat lunch with them, talk about panels we have planned, and seriously the ONLY thing on the programing that they had ANY interest in was some robot chicken panel. And I'm like ya have fun with that, I'm not interested, I'm at comic con, going to continue being a comic nerd.
So we excuse ourselves and go about the rest of our day.

Something along the lines of this.
Conventions are a conglomeration of things for me.
>cosplay
>panels
>guests
>SWAG

Slowly one is outweighing the other. Cosplay seems to start outweighing panels. And within Cosplay AGAIN it seems the theme isn't being yielded to. I am a cosplayer, I love cosplaying, but I dont enjoy that anime conventions are slowly becoming ONLY about the costumes

So time for the shitty robot chicken panel, they call us, and kind of rudely insist that we meet up with them for it.
Now my boyfriend has this thing where being rude is taboo as hell so he agrees and we get in the HUGE ASS LINE for this fucking robot chicken panel at a fucking comic convention, and I really had a panel on horror comics that I wanted to go to in the same time slot, and we wait and wait in this huge line, cant even hear this man on a screen, and I start to think that we are just going to stand hear in this off room and will not be let into the seated room at all, and I really don't like robot chicken so I piece out, and they FALLOW, I mean really if you like it stay, you don't have to be with me.
So we go to my horror panel.
And I thought it was wonderful, I mean the fucking writer for hellboy was there what the fuck else do you need. And they looked board as shit. Like, I am going to die if they don't stop talking board as shit, sighing and everything.
They are then GLUED TO OUR ASS while we try to enjoy the rest of the day, and honestly nether of them have any interest in anything that was at the convention, and the whole time the girl BITCHES and MOANS about "Oh my god I can't believe those other two haven't met back up with us yet AT LEAST you two did SOME things with us"
BITCH.
I AINT YOUR CHAPERONE, MAMA, WHATEVER.
You basically invited yourself to this convention with me.

At least the boy likes anime, and there is some anime programing that we see for him.
The girl has never watched anime, nether of them have ever picked up a comic book, and they are just really annoying for the rest of the night.
I mean why the hell did you invite your damn self.
So, somehow during the day I hurt my foot.
I did not know it at the time, but I lifted my toe nail off the nail bed badly, to the point that it is still blue as I am typing this and the convention was in October. All I knew is that it hurt, like my eyes were watering hurt, and so I took my shoes off and that made it feel better and ran around without them, and that was fine until it was time to leave for the day.
And so, I told them, I could not walk all the way back to grand central I needed to take a taxi.
Oh god, the boy WHINES AND MOANS, lecturing me about choosing to wear heals.
I.wear.heals.every.day.
Seriously, I am a sales person, and I wear heals for work every single day. And I told him, that it was not a pain from the heals it was my toes they hurt so bad I could not walk at the end of the night...but he kept condescending telling me that heals were inappropriate for conventions I should wear seekers, even when I expressed I had worn thous same heals at another convention... I have worn heals at more conventions then he has even been too for fucks sake.

I knew what you meant by swag. I just don't see how it's getting out competed by cosplayers. Unless you mean the fact that AA and Dealers are starting to sell cosplay stuff. Cause they've always done that to sell to the non dressed up attendees.

I'm not noticing a big increase in the cosplay panels. Cons have had them for a while, and there are usually only 2-3. Which makes sense considering usually one of the guests is a cosplay guest.

But no, it was the heals and I am stupid and he doesn't care that it 'is not very lolita or whatever you are wearing' but next time I should wear sneakers.
He has been to 3 conventions in his life.
I have been going to conventions since FUCKING 2005 and have worn higher heals for cosplay, and tuns and tuns of heals for lolita.
IT WAS NOT THE FUCKING HEALS. I fucking injured myself somehow.
So he insists we walk to the place he chose for us to go to dinner. I just can't. I really just can not at this point, and I go to try to catch a taxi, I am not really good at it and can't find any, and I go to take a fucking rick saw or whatever they are called because NOPE, I take his girlfriend with me so I am not cold and alone and the boys walk.
He gets piss drunk at dinner to the point he takes a piss in the fucking sink of hard rock.
He then insists that we walk to grand central and do not take a taxi.
I can not walk at this point. He insists that I am being a fucking baby and I can walk, heads off, makes me feel like shit to the point that I fallow, still lecturing me about my shoe choice, I am in tears, and walking like I am dying.
To the point that RANDOM STRANGERS ON THE STREET ask me if I am ok, and my boyfriend ends up carrying me most of the way.

I have kind of stooped talking to both of them after all that shit.

FUCKING THIS

My friend does Naked Snake from MGS3 and uses the wrong camo (M81 woodland, never used in the game) a camo bandana. Not green not even blue, it has camo on it and it's some weird fucking duck hunter pattern. On top of that he uses a digital multicam camo harnes that isnt even STABO and it's like some harness for shotgun shells and its fucking digital camo....and on top of all that he wears sneakers. It is GHETTO AS FUCK and looks HORRIBLE and he can afford to do better, he sure as hell can but it's like he has -zero- attention to detail or is lazy. Probably the former.

And what really pissed me off is that he got his picture taken more than I did. I know, i know it sounds petty to get asshurt over but I spent more money and even MADE A FUCKING SPIE HARNESS FROM PARACHUTE WEBBING and got custom brassards from my MGS:PW cosplay and just....AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

four things that i wish never thought i'd deal with at conventions:
1) The ass-wipes who only go to any convention just to play magic the gathering, and bash on or give the stinkeye to cosplayers who enter the room. Basically the same collective asswipes who ruin your favorite store that sell table top games or any Games and Workshop store you've been into.
2) Star Wars fans who take shit seriously and like to bash on Trekkies or people in anime cosplay. Never understood how they (or the other dickweeds mentioned above) have this elitism and fandom for something so horrible. That and how they can make fun of people with like interests...
3) When i'm not costume but i figure in my head "Hey its a nice day out and its an outing! i'll wear something nice." everyone thinks i'm in costume or gives me a funny look/insult. Granted it doesn't help i'm in Steampunk inspired or vintage clothing from the 30's-mid 60's, but can't a guy look like a gentlemen anymore?
4) The not in costume boyfriend that watches(with hawk like precision) his; better looking and in better shape than them girlfriend; usually in the skimpy cosplay. Only in recent years have i seen this, and i have to laugh every time. Its almost like they think, someone is just going walk on by and take them away forever! There's no need for this! They obvious feel something for you (though god knows why...) and can probably handle themselves. If something funny does happen that when you do something.

Yeah so... thats all that really gets to me...

>people who don't want to spend any money or time on their cosplays so everything is casual and from a bandwagon

This is the reason my friend has declined from a vidya cosplayer to a bandwagonner. She was going to begin work on XIII-2 Lightning, and then changed her mind and is going as Vanellope instead. She also plans to go as Sarah Marshall from the movie of the same name. Decent quality can be achieved with less effort, more immediate popularity.

And guess what she told me when I said I was going to go as Giroro?

>that show has way too many episodes for me
>think anyone will recognize you?
>it's your DOODIE as a soldier and an invader!

I feel as though we are going in opposite directions. While she hops on wagons and throws together casual as fuck cosplays, I'm aiming for grander things demanding bigger props and more intricate makeup.

Guess that's another thing that grinds my gears. Blatant lack of effort. People who slack when you know they can do better. And on the other end of the spectrum, people who never seem to improve by even a marginal amount.

Many cosplayers have no background in any of the skills that many would consider necessary to properly pull off a costume.

It's not expensive, but just the idea of going out to some store you've never been to so you can buy a product you've never used and perform an act you've never tried is enough to just make these people say "FUCK IT. I look good enough."

That, and makeup is one of those things that a lot of people just don't fucking understand and have no idea where to look for tips on how to learn it.

Makes me think that someone should gather up their pool of cosplay friends and put together some simple tutorial videos on that sort of shit. Cosplay Makeup 101, Skincare, Wig preparation, costume ironing, and so on.

Do all of that with low cost and difficulty in mind. Too many people try to advise newbies by telling them to buy 500$ worth of expensive tools and equipment. Like propmakers telling beginners to use fiberglass and powersanders and epoxy resin and shit when they don't even know how to sculpt, let alone have any sort of workshop or equipment to use any of that shit.

Something like, "Go to Walgreens, or your nearest drugstore, and look for this kind of product with these things on the label. It should be about 5$"

I think it's one of those things you kind of have to throw yourself into, self-critique, figure out what you can improve, and seek out resources to improve your skills.

That being said, Youtube is a massively useful resource if you want to learn makeup skills. I basically learned everything from watching professional makeup artists work on their own faces. I recommend looking through playlists on the Youtube channels for "pixiwoo" and "lisaeldridgedotcom". (I'd direct-link, but 4chan is spam-blocking my links.) Any playlist marked "basics" is a good place to start. Bear in mind that the products are more high-end than a beginner may want to use, but you can google product reviews on basically any product.

Just some tips to any makeup-clueless seagulls who might be browsing.

I personally do think it is a bit silly that so many black chicks and dudes dress up as non-black characters, but at the same time they're just expressing their interest in the hobby, same as us, and that makes me happy. If you really wanted to nitpick, the characters are asian so maybe nobody except asians should cosplay them? Maybe even only the Japanese since the characters are Japanese? Granted we have virtually the same skin color as opposed to a girl as dark as her. But she clearly put effort into the outfit and her pose and I don't see why you feel the need to put her down.

Just because somebody has a naturally dark skin, doesn't mean that I am going to give them any exceptions.

That is a major point, in fact sometimes western people end up looking more like the characters, because they have bigger eyes, though japanese people often but more effort into it.

It grinds my gears when bad closet cosplayers act aloof and snooty to people who actually make the shit they wear. I've seen this at cons and online. It seriously pisses me off. There's no need to be dickish and not even acknowledge when someone does something well from a series you have a mutual appreciation for. Some people are lacking the humility and maturation to be able to say to themselves "wow this person did a really good job, I should compliment them because I love the character too." I always love seeing when people do something I enjoy correctly, how hard is it to be friendly with people in your fandom?

Have to agree with this. Most rude cosplayers I've encountered have been mediocre to bad ones who think they're hot shit, like the majority of tripfags and people attempting to get internet famous.

I feel like they act this way because they feel threatened. They think they're so cool wearing their ironic or sexy/popular costume they 'totally didn't try' for and then get intimidated and butthurt when someone who actually works hard and makes a good costume gets more attention.

The other end of the spectrum are the delusional types who think or have been told they are perfect by all their friends, and upon seeing better have a mental breakdown.

Still, I just always have to wonder WHY I am the one to say something nice about a crap costume just to start a conversation with someone about the fandom when I know the person has seen my work and knows who I am. I love discussing it with people but I feel like I often have to start it with some other cosplayers (most fans who don't cosplay like to strike up conversations with me about it come to think of it). I really don't get that at all. And then there are flakes who are in your fandom, know you exist, but only say something nice to you AFTER you say it to them. Their costume can be bad or very good from my experience but it is like you have to ass kiss for them to even say anything nice about your work, which again, is from something you supposedly have a common appreciation for. I'm in a relatively small fandom and for the most part the best cosplayers are also the nicest and pay the most attention to the details and work you put into it.

A lot of it has to do with e-peens, ego and general lack of socialization. There are many mediocre to bad cosplayers who are humble and absolute sweethearts. Then you get the types that will post dirty mirror pictures on their tumblr and are auto-fellated by all their friends who tell them they're the best cosplayers in the universe and give them an undeserved ego. They go to conventions feeling like they're entitled to attention and being the best, and when they don't get the attention they think they deserve or someone else 'steals their thunder' they get defensive and pissed off.

I see this a lot at meet-ups and photoshoots. You have your very good cosplayers who are generally a non-issue because they get enough attention and praise just by being good, your bad to mediocre cosplayers who are just there to have fun and then the awkward in-betweeners who think they're amazing and aren't and feel threatened by anyone getting more of the attention/praise they claim ownership to.

Holy holy shit, this. Is so true. Most of the people who act like assholes to everyone unless they think you can be of value to them (like being friends with you makes them more popular) are always painfully mediocre or worse. Because they don't have any talent or skill for costume making and they're too lazy to practice or learn any, they just try to cover that up by being uptight, self-centered dicks. Optionally, they're just whoring themselves out like nobody's business and talking shit non-stop.

One girl I know represents both types, she's way too lazy to put effort into her costumes so they're all closet tier or bought off eBay. She's always still demanding "the same respect" for her bought costume some kid over at Cambodia sewed for her because "cosplay isn't about craftmanship, it's about representing the character". No, you lazy fuck, you clicked 2 buttons on a website to get your costume, I slaved over mine for months and poured money on it. also: you had one job and you don't even look like the character

She keeps licking the buttholes of the well-known cosplayers of my area and if you don't want to be her friend instantly or aren't ~mesmerized~ that a self-appointed ~famous aidoru~ is giving you her divine attention, you're a stuck-up bitch.
