Hey there!

You did a good job! Might wanna make the eyeliner on your bottom lid a little thinner, though. I'd also recommend getting a nice, full wig. You seem like you'd be one of those few people who actually look good in a candy color wig. Short hair looks nice on you~

depends on your cheekbones. I myself have a naturally square face, so I like boy-short cuts with bangs that frame around my cheekbones, which are naturally high (mother was a bitfag). Other than that, I've taught myself to relax my jaw when I'm not eating or speaking. It takes a while to become second-nature, but your face looks more oval-esque.

For God's sake, please don't ever buy from lolitakisama. Shit is so fucking tacky, and it has literally been a laughing stock of the vk community since its inception.

Honestly, your best bet is Japanese brands like h.naoto and SEXPOT, taobao stores like Punk Rave and A-Devil, or just having a good fucking eye when you're out shopping regularly.

Visual kei is more of an aesthetic than an actual fashion style anyway - it's all about styling, hair and makeup moreso than the clothes themselves.

Not really. Just try not to have them falling apart when you finally get around to wearing them. Like any new endeavor, try copying a pair or two of pants as closely as you can to try and understand the "flow" of the design. After that, it starts to get easier to understand what works, what doesn't, and how much is too much. Trust me, you'll look much better with too little than you will with too much. Craziest that quickly comes to mind is early X Japan. That shit was insane. I heard from my mom (she's Japanese) that in the late '80s, they did have much money, so they used sugar water to style it that high up, and as their gigs progressed and they got sweaty, the sugar water would start running and their hair would humorously deflate.

If you're really familiar with lolita, then one of the habits you have to break is thinking in terms of brand exclusivity. This style is so much easier if you just stop thinking about brand bragging rights and instead develop some creativity with off-brand shopping.

Hopefully if you're getting into VK you already watch a ton of videos and know what you should be looking like. If you just want to ooze VK on a daily basis without being weird looking:

The first step is probably always hair and eyeliner. If you don't have a good amount of eyeliner and a choppy, striking hairdo you've already failed. Colouring isn't a necessity, but hairspray is.

When first building your wardrobe, emulate the rock look.
Most American tv shows have that one 'rocker' character, so maybe you can think of one to draw inspiration from. I.E.Constant eyeliner, skinny jeans with studs or rips and a chain, shoes and accessories with chunky buckles. Mostly all in dark, cool tones.
Mix in a few quirky things, neon or antique.

It really depends on what look you want. For the picture you quoted, probably yes. It's definitely worth keeping the mens section open as an option regardless.

One thing people do seem to ignore is eyebrows, though. I'm not saying shave them completely off (though a lot of artists do), but even if you get them waxed, give them some definition with some shadow/pencil when you do your makeup. Unless a vk artist is going for the complete no brows look, they've got them shaped using makeup and that's part of the look.

As another caucasian person, I can say that the biggest thing that makes a difference on me is to make sure the inner corner of my upper lid is lined. Also, most vk artists don't put black inside the lower waterline.

Other than that, it's really just up to working with different shapes to suit your eye. That can really just come from experience and experimentation.

I just shape my eyebrows now and use shadow to give extra definition when I do heavy makeup. I think that works fine with more casual styles like we're discussing in this thread

You have a lot of leeway with eyebrows, so you can either go for a clean, thin arch; a very straight eyebrow that starts low in the center; or completely emulate most VK artists with the very short, straight eyebrow that's VERY angled.

Also, to whoever was talking about not having time in the morning for hair, it only takes me about 15 minutes to do mine, and I'm not at all experienced with this yet (and I'm a huge perfectionist). If you have your hair cut decently, you'd be surprised at how little time it takes to volumize your hair. After that, it's just about doing the little details, which take a majority of the time (say, about 10 minutes).

As a half-Japanese person who, growing up, learned to speak Japanese but was primarily in English-speaking schools, after I got into VK music, I find myself kinda switching between them. Some words sound so different in Japanese that I feel like they're kinda "different" words than their English counterpart, so singing it in Japanese feels natural, but some words feel primarily English, even with Japanese pronunciation, so I end up singing in English. I find, especially for X Japan for some reason, I lean towards English.

When I got my hair cut, I told the person to basically mix the first four images here
http://imgur.com/a/KkHcm

My hair routine:
My hair's pretty straight (dat azn hair), so I take a small straighter and straighten out the few chunks here and there that I feel need to be straightened
~2 minutes tops

Next, I wet my hands and run it through my hair to dampen it and also slightly style it in the general way I want it
<1 minute

Next, I take some got2B Glued spiking gel, squeeze that onto my hands, and run it through my hair, especially in the back, where I spike it up.
~1-2 minutes

After that, I take hairspray (I use TRESemmé hairspray). I use this both to volumize, and once I'm finished, set my hair. To volumize my front, I l lift my hair up and spray lightly into the roots. I don't do too much since I don't exactly want it sticking up straight in the front. I use my hands to get the shape and volume that I want, and allow that to dry.
5 minutes

cont.

>> No.6608733

>>6608732
For the back, I get some more of the got2B gel and run in through the back of my head again, scrunching to get it to spike up a little more. The gel has long lasting hold through the day, but it doesn't set quickly, so I keep the spiked up hair (I leave it messy, since that's how I like the back, which also saves me time) set using the got2B Glued freezing spray. Sometimes, when I have more time, I'll take a teasing comb to make the hair really stick out while using hairspray to hold it up (this is after the second run of the gel). With that, the back's done, the front's done, and then I move on to detailing. At the moment, I use the gel I already have for this, but I plan on trying some Gatsby Moving Rubber when I have the chance to buy it for this later. I take a little bit in between my fingers and use it to create the ends of my hair and twist or scrunch them into spikes. Lastly, I take my hairspray and set all of it.
All this takes about another 5 to 10 minutes total, and it comes out looking decent. I'm sure if I wasn't in a hurry all the time, I could easily spend 30 minutes on it, though.

how the hell does a person actually tease hair?
i've looked through so many videos on youtube but none of them actually teach you how to do it.

i use a flattening iron to straighten my hair, then i pick out a section, then i use a thin-tooth comb and start to poke(?) at my hair in and up&down motion. but it just falls down back to a flop on my head.

>> No.6610741

>>6610713
I don't know the quality of your hair, but my hair is "tease-friendly" which means I can tease it before using hairspray
The usual way is to spray the section lightly with hairspray (it's easier if you use one that doesn't dry too fast, but it's not a must) and then just do the same motion you use when brushing out your hair, you're just doing it backwards
>Hold hair
>Brush it in wrong direction
Not up and down, then you're just teasing it and brushing it out again, so only in the "wrong" direction
There are teasing-combs that you can buy, the bristles (don't know if it's the right word) on those are of different lengths to easier tease your hair
Yes, you want a thin-tooth comb.

Hopefully you got something of what I wrote

Use a cake eyeliner or a pencil eyeliner (not gel eyeliner or black lipstick), and buy a sealing spray (Urban Decay has some nice ones) and spray the shit out of your lips after you apply the black. Also use a primer underneath, and if you're using cake eyeliner, mix it with a waterproof mixing medium instead of plain water. Make sure you don't line the innermost part of your lips, and for the love of everything holy, don't rub your lips together. This is a lip look that really isn't suited for real life wear, because eating/drinking/doing anything WILL smear it, and there's unfortunately not much you can do :/ the things I listed are what I did for a similar look for a photoshoot.

The problem with gel is that it never really dries, so that's what makes it more prone to smearing. Although mixing it with a bit of mixing medium probably makes it a little bit better, if you absolutely can't use anything else.
There are lipstick primers, but I think a good eye primer would actually be better, like Urban Decay's classic Primer Potion. But then again, I've never tried a lip primer I actually liked, maybe there are some good ones out there.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I15ibXY2w

I've done both and I find twists to be quicker and easier to do, but braids stay in better and tighter. Another thing I do is braid/twist while my hair is still wet or damp, so that it tightens up some as it dries.

>> No.6613373

They might be braided extensions and they look rounder because the total amount of hair in those braids is more than what a person's actual hair would end up being, so they're a little thicker.

The problem with cornrows and shorter hair is that it tends to be more slippery and not hold as well. Also, shorter pieces will poke out where they end in the braid. If you have some strong product, you can probably get it to stay. If you're hair is TOO short, braids might not work at all.
