I used a heavy blue drill cotton for mine. Has a nice bit of shine, holds pleats very well if you stiffen them up right. For the white I used a dance spandex that had a bit of shine too.

I'm kind of scared of it. I was bullied so badly for liking it as a kid, to the point of people beating the shit out of me for liking a "dyke cartoon". I'm not exactly thrilled at the idea of trendy little hipsters adoring something that made my childhood so miserable. Something about it being an "in thing" just kind of makes me uncomfortable. I suppose I'll just have to get over it, the same thing happened with Pokemon. I guess a 25 year old should be over things like this, it's not like anything from our age-groups childhood isn't being flocked to for the sale of retro. In fact, I should be getting excited about the new wave of merchendise, I'll have new things to collect.

On a positive note, Sailor Moon kind of saved me. I was sexually abused as a kid, and it made me feel empowered at a time in my childhood where I really needed it. I wanted to feel like a regular, innocent 8 year old, and it kind of felt like the main characters protected innocence.

Isn't the main character supposed to be 13 or 14 years old? Everything about the Sailor Moon characters SCREAMS youth. She's running around in a school uniform. Part of the charm is that the original artist accurately draws her as young and "developing" so fanart/cosplay that unintentionally makes her older/sexier, is undesirable statement. And for most cosplayers as your skill increases with costumes you get older and more experienced, but you cannot wear your costumes unless you have some age-defying genetics/cosmetics/tricks or a young friend to portray this young teenage character.

I cannot be more excited for this. I really can't. At risk of sounding like an autistic weeb Sailor Moon is everything to me. Long before I had a car my thought was when I got my first car I would hang a Sailor Moon figure from the rearview and if anyone asked who she was and why she was there I would say "Jesus is your copilot, sailor moon is mine" (i got a car, i did that, it was awesome despite the side eye)

I work at a school. On my uniform i keep a small sailor moon pin. When my students ask who she is I say she's my patron saint. I consume the over priced cheap quality shit hot topic spews just because she's on it.

These look pretty good. If I would pick on anything the bows are too high on the chest.

That skirt fabric is appropriate to the manga. Perhaps you associate glossy with cheap cause of the bad press satin gets with cosplayers who use it wrong.
The sheen on it is low key and looks like bridal satin which is a nice fabric.

yea idk i thought it was alright but never fully got into it myself. Had a friend who was obsessed and wanted to get a whole cosplay group together. he even told her about it and I guess she loved the idea enough to put a photo of us ( i ended up playing dinah no idea how that happened) in her last book. didnt get into the series enough to even buy the last to see our photo in there haha. thinking about it now though id say id agree a bit, her writing style is good but her drawing isnt really professional manga looking. Most people would probably be willing to pay $50 for regular, $75 for super, and $100 for Eternal. Thing is with a base outfit, that still means people would have to commission or make the rest. You won't see too much for something people will have to do extra work to finish, especially when they could just buy a $50-75 complete outfit from eBay.

I love the series and have always wanted to make a lot of the outfits, but I rarely ever go to cons or cosplay on my own. Not looking to make a job out of selling costumes, but I thought it would be one way to use my skills and help out fellow SM fans.

I would include brooch/choker/tiara but not shoes/earrings/etc. The base suit would be a high quality dance knit.
For the skirt, would you prefer cotton lycra, peachskin, or a high (bridal) quality satin? I'm planning to use cotton lycra for my Jupiter outfit, but I know some people like a little sheen.

I would say offer a matte version and version with a bit of sheen. This way people could get a more expensive version or a less expensive. Since you're offering some accessories, you could probably get away with 100-120 for regular to $150-175 for eternal. No. You're never going to duplicate the way the skirts flow in the manga (you're not constantly twirling around for photos, that wouldn't come out very well) so just make it out of a cotton sateen instead, it doesn't look tacky, you can have very well defined pleats, and, just like in the manga, with a little crinoline (there is actually a few Sailor Moon spreads where you can see the crinoline too!), the pleats will stick out from the hip roll, which is much more easy to duplicate than a swoosh, and both of these qualities of the skirts exist in the manga. Not to mention, Naoko Takeuchi draws the School uniform skirts just as flowy, and obviously those would not be made out of a satin of any sort, but a cotton. And the way that the chest protector is not a separate piece? Bothers me. So yes, I would not call those other commissions good. But of course, other people are free to. I really hope she's not charging very much for those.

Always wanted my sailor suits out of a super matte vinyl or PVC (nothing shiny, just the suits have that thickness, and the way they wrinkle... never saw them as lycra ever. Especially the chest protector part, it's supposed to be hard and formed to the chest).

I think the chest protector is best done out of neoprene honestly (assuming the rest of the suit is in lycra). Just seems to make the most sense material-wise.

Wow no there are not. If they are they are the "artsy" ones like where Moon has a tattoo or is barefoot or something. I agree with using crinoline but it should not be visible and it is NOT part of the manga or anime skirts.

I've always seen it as being a matte moleskin, personally. Maybe milliskin for the rest, but definitely something a little thicker for the chest protector, without being so unreasonable to work with as neoprene.

As for the chest protector being separate, I kind of agree, but I have very very rarely seen anybody do it separately. It's not even something I realized until I studied the manga and realized it's portrayed slightly shinier than the rest of the fuku, and also I think it cracks at one point. So it's somewhat valid to subtract points for inaccuracy but... no other commissioner has ever done it right either.

There is a scene in the manga too where it's shown with cracks on it. I don't remember that anime scene at all :x
but I think as time went on the concept was kind of abandoned, like her hair pieces having utility. because I don't think she illustartes it like it's a separate piece in later books. it starts to look like the same material as the waist instead of shiny like the armbands are drawn in the first couple of artbooks.

Even if they can find the picture, you're going to discount it as non-cannon anyway. even then, maybe the artist always saw them with an underskirt and just never drew it in the manga, you have no clue, so you can't say they aren't a part of the outfit in the comic since you are not the creator. you guys already agreed that the skirts need one as a costume piece at least. no need to get defensive here.

OK, yes I totally agree. I think you came off a little strong with 'YOU'RE WRONG, OK?' but this response makes me feel motivated to find it.
