I'm trying to make (as in, sew) an otome-kei wardrobe.
(Don't worry, I actually know how to make clothes and how to buy fabric. I won't end up with leg warmers badly made out of towels or anything like that.)

From what I can see, it's American 50s style dresses and basic gathered skirts, with hemlines to the knees, done in what american stores would call children's fabric (with cute pictures), or gingham or plad, or "country" patterns fabrics (with flowers). Is this correct?

What are some good types of shirts to wear with the basic skirts? As in, what are they called so that I can find patterns for them?

I'm in Chicago so it's cold as fuck, are leggings acceptable instead of tights? Or do you think would it be better to knit tights out of wool?

Also I would like some tips on looking... presentable, and comfortable for every day wear. My job is selling crafts online, and I'm an adult - so I don't have school or a job or anything to go to where I have to look professional. But I also don't want people thinking I'm crazy when I go grocery shopping.

Thank you for your time.

Well I'm sure you'll enjoy them next year as that's about how long it's going to take to make full length tights, knit by hand.

... not OP, but an experienced knitter could churn out a basic pair (two tubes connected to a brief) in less than two weeks. heels and such might take a little longer, but the only way it could take a year is if she had to harvest the wool hereslf by sneaking into sheep farms at night and shearing them with nair clippers.

Sorry about the Otome part, by the way - I know nothing about it. Hope someone who knows it better will come and clarify things.
If that doesn't happen, may I suggest saying "fuck you" to the the overall rules and just watch pictures of the style and creating from that?

OP, otome is a very broad and vague term. It's not so much about the individual pieces but more about the outfit as a whole. As long as the overall feel is cute and feminine (otome from the word meaning 'maiden') then it will work. There's no real specific rules about the style other than that.

You can look at some popular otome-kei brands to get an idea of what kinds of stuff they produce. Emily Temple Cute, MILK, Jane Marple, etc. Generally seems like dresses and skirts are more popular in otome (for that feminine feel I suppose) and while tights are more popular, leggings would definitely still work as long as you kept the right feel to the outfit.

>while waiting for trains

this is the nice thing about all the trains in chicago, right? when i was in college and stopped by a train (my dad lives in the suburbs, so i would drive up to visit often and have to cross like 3 busy rail lines) i would study. i guess i should take up knitting again because lately i've been bored stiff waiting at railroad crossings.

i think you'll be fine with leggings though. leggings+boots look the same as tights+boots anyway. claire's sells fleece tights that are really warm also, but they only have like 3 colours of them. or what i do (it's a bit bulky though) is wear thick knit tights or thermal underwear under a pair of regular tights. it doesn't look terribly strange under a dress, especially a longer one.

As said earlier, OP, otome is more about the feel of the outfit rather than the actual pieces. There aren't really concrete rules.
It's cute and feminine, with a sort of whimsical, fairytale feeling to it. Oftentimes, there are almost-clashing-but-not-quite colors, patterns, and motifs. Dresses and skirts are most popular, but pants and shorts can work. Peter pan collars, small hairbows, cute hats, low cute heels and boots, patterned socks and tights (yes, knit tights will very much work). Popular motifs are deer, flowers, fruit, lately cats (although these are popular all over Japan right now). Kind of kitschy prints.
Otome can overlap with a lot of styles, like lolita, himkaji (a style of gyaru), and twee (a style in the West).

This is my favorite otome tumblr:

Hey OP, do you mind if I dump the otome-kei I have? Like others have said the fashion isn't as regimented as say, Lolita where there are so much as rules but guidelines to achieve an overall look. It sort of seems like you need a basic wardrobe of dresses and skirts that aren't pencil, tights and some cardigans. Maybe a cute blazer. Specific patterns don't matter as much, but you don't want anything that's very busy since otome tends to lean towards 'elegant' in its aesthetic.

I to am also trying to build up a wardrobe in the fashion and it's a little slow-going. Also rather cold here right now.

>> No.6577739

Hey OP, I wear lolita/otome in Chicago too. I think leggings are perfectly acceptable with otome, as for dresses using warm knit fabrics will be very beneficial to you. Try thermal knits and cute patterned knits cut into easy swishy circle dresses, otome brands do many dresses like that.

Layering cute sweaters and cardigans under your main winter coat will keep you warmer while also having layers you can wear inside when you take off your winter coat, and since you knit and crochet you can make your own as well as cute scarves and such to match your outfits.

I'd love to see examples of the things you make for this!

Most girls need confident men. Maybe because most of them are insecure, maybe because they just want a prince that can protect them *if* they eventually need protection. Idk, there could be a lot of reasons for that, but it's probably just because confident people are more interesting. So... Are you secure about yourself? Are you ok with your body? Do you enjoy your job and your hobbies as much as you should?
I guess the first step would be to stop crying over how you hate your life or why girls won't like you - it's actually very annoying. Then, start taking care of yourself both mentally and physically; read good books, take walks on the park, eat healthily, buy nice clothes... When you begin to feel good with yourself, that's when you'll be ready to make someone happy. Eventually, nice girls will notice you.
I hope that helped. Now gtfo.

Sort of. There's a lot of overlap with certain subsets of Lolita (which is why some move on to otome after Lolita since the pieces tends to be similar) but it's not as rule oriented. I know it's been compared to Country and Casual Lolita in previous threads, but it's still not either specifically.

Totally feel you anon. Luckily I'm on a campus where everyone tends to dress nicely, but when I go back for Xmas I get stared at if I go so much in a flowery skirt. Best tip I can give is meh it. You're not going in full lolita or ganguro gyaru, it's actually quite subtle. Heck, you might even get a few compliments for having a 'cute vintage' look by some hipsters. If you're not that confident, start subtly by going with not so OTT skirts, then work your way up. That's how I did it when I started wearing cutesy things to school and such.

TL;DR: don't sweat it. I think otome is totally wearable even in that sort of setting.

Why this isn't lolita?
Yes, I'm new.

>> No.6583111

>>6583079
imagine it with a softer petti (I think the one she is wearing is a little too poofy for otome) and you'll notice it's not as mitchy matchy as loli (no dark brown on the bottom for example) and it's more... flowly/loose? I dunno... hard to explain especially since I think that petti is throwing you off on the otome visual.

What above said, also the shoes are a little more mature feeling than loli shoes

>> No.6583137

I guess I get what you're trying to say... If the tights were dark brown, colors would be balanced, so it'd be lolita?
Basically, what makes it "otome" is the color scheme?

>> No.6583143

>>6582716
Yeah. Even in cc, people start to care less and accept more. I went to uni in a big city, and almost every girl in my class wore high heels to school, even in the middle of a snow storm. Back home, people stare at me for wearing a skirt that isn't a jean mini-skirt. Older people really like the way I dress, though.

Anyway, if you attract attention at cc from girls who dress like slobs, you shouldn't care. I dress otome to work and cc (taking more classes even though I graduated college already).

>> No.6583146

>>6583137
no, it's the overall feel to it... the hair is a bit messy, the make up is very very toned down and natural, like >>6583122 said about the shoes, just an overall more mature and natural feel to it? Now if she changed out the shoes/tights and did something with her makeup and hair it could be lolita, yes. Though the over all color scheme of the dark browns with that dress still says Otome to me.

Are they? They look like those shoes every Lolita has that I hate... but otherwise what >>6583111 said. As what has been said before, there is overlap between the styles. Otome has a tendancy to look more 'grown up' overall in comparison.

>>6583137
Yes. Otome seem to take bigger risks with color scheme overall in comparison to Lolita.

I've found cynthia rowley 2215 a good dress pattern for otome, it's east to adjust the bodice as you'd like and make the skirt fuller.

It's not as common, but I think it is possible so long as it looks... feminine. This is the only I have and only recently seen.

is there an otome community similar to daily_lolita anywhere?

>> No.6586631

I'm after the name/pics of an ETC biker jacket that is black and white check with a swirly ETC logo on the back (I think it was surrounded by music notes?)
I cant for the life of me find it anywhere online after seeing it a while back.
Any help would be appreciated!

Thw problem with otome is there really isnt a comm unity for it. Add least the western side. I think it because it's closely linked to other styles like lolita and a lot of girls use the style as a 'filler'
